It's a shame that the members of Procol Harum don't really make the top lists for their talents. Gary Brooker doesn't make the top vocalists list, Keith Reid the top lyricists, Matthew Fisher the top organists etc... They are a cut above the rest in my book.

Wall Street Blues
The Idol
A Dream in Ev'ry Home
One Eye on the Future
Simple Sister
Whaling Stories

The VIP Room
Kaleidoscope
The Blink of an Eye
Pandora's Box

While I was in college in Philadelphia from 1964 to 1969, a new AM radio station, WFIL, came along to challenge longtime leader WIBG. One of the DJs for WFIL's name was Chuck(can't remember his last name, forgive me). Chuck would often introduce the single, "A Whiter Shade of Pale," as "a song about a bucket!" Funny pun, ha ha! He later moved on to a station in San Francisco. Missed his sense of humor. I became an instant Procol Harum fan from that first single release. Although the band has not yet been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame(still maintaining hope!), "Whiter Shade..." has been placed in the Hall's "classic" song pantheon.

I mentioned above that PH didn't seem to entirely get their due beyond their hits. What I find interesting though is that I think they fall squarely into the "prog" camp, but they never got the flack and the bad rap that other prog bands got for being pompous and humorless (ELP, King Crimson, Yes, etc.), and that's good. (I'm not saying they WERE pompous or humorless - they weren't.) They're a rare example of a prog band that was not later villified.

Bob it's a classic i just learned about from 1968. i theorize that Lieber and Stoller introduced that sound to PH.

I think you can pick up Bach from Fisher's early playing and melody composition. Brooker, not so sure what his classical influence or leanings were.

IN RE: the earlier reference I made to a Philadelphia DJ named Chuck, the one who made the pun with "pale" and "bucket." After some research, I found out it was Chuck Browning("the Chucker") who, after his stint at WFIL, moved out to the Bay Area and worked at San Francisco AM powerhouse,, KFRC, among other gigs. Very funny guy. Passed away in 1988.
