Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

my younger daughter just asked if WFMU ever plays modern music. i said yes, all the time, it just depends on which show you listen to. she asked 'like what kind of modern music', so i said all different kinds, rock, kids music, just a lot of recently released stuff, but i said not really any 'pop' music. then she said the only type of modern music IS pop music. sigh. (she's been exposed to all different kinds of WFMU programming since her birth).

Personally - the mid20th Century (say) accident of the collision of Pop & Art is what fascinates me most? That it could even happen. All the boundaries dissolved under Modernism. What is say 'FolkMusic' with Mass Media ?? What is 'Classical' after Schoenberg & Cage & TheBeatles? It's a big beautiful mess...

'Postmodern' as a word is a grammatical oxymoron - but deliberately I think. To make a point. It was first used in the early 1970s in Architecture I think - to describe facades on the form of buildings that looked 'Classical' ...a kind of artificial NeoClassicism to an extent...

As I see it - some major difs twixt Modernism & PostMod are : Mod had Manifestos & every Shock of the New was like a matter of life or death ex[pressed in Style & Form. In PostMod - it's Pastiche - pick & choose from whatever you like. But it's not Manifestos that meant that much, sadly...

But the analog ear is tuned to, what?, tape, vinyl, radio waves...all technologies that leave a trace of their material on the aural effect.

Charles Moore, Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, Michael Graves...core postmodern architects, yes, strong proponents of the term. I just don't see how "borrowing" has ever been eschewed, though. Homer borrowed. Shakespeare. Rabelais.
