David Shortell:

I think I first saw Donovan in the unnarrated 1977 documentary series “All You Need Is Love: The Story of Popular Music” when PBS rebroadcast it in 1980. He played the Brian Jones-inspired “Local Boy Chops Wood”.

Hi David! I kind of feel thay I've been aware of Donovan since I was a kid. It's almost impossible to have been alive in 1967 and not heard this song,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Funky16Corners:

Hi C! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm

it was played at least every few hours on wabc-am, for weeks if not months
Avatar 3:34pm
Erica:

I could NOT sing that high.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Funky16Corners:

Donovan's version of this song has never been released. It was recorded by Karen Verros and Dana Gillespie, both versions rare and expensive.
Avatar 3:35pm
Erica:

I discovered the Dana Gillespie version first, on BBC Radio 6 Music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm

I think it was just reissued for Record Store Day

Avatar 🥁 3:40pm
David Shortell:

Until now, I only knew "You Just Gotta Know My Mind" as a song recorded in the 2000's by the Royal Purple (a project by WFMU Rock'N'Soul deejays Mike Sin and Stu Rutherford).
Avatar 3:41pm
Erica:

Sorry I thought you were talking to me about Record Store Day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm

@David - Now I have to go dig out my Royal Purple CDs. Mike gave me a bunch of them years ago
Avatar 🥁 3:42pm
David Shortell:

I once saw Donovan in person, but not as a performer. Back in the 2000’s, he spoke to an audience at the Anthology Film Archives after a screening of Jacques Demy’s 1972 film “The Pied Piper” which he played the titular role in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Funky16Corners:

I've always wanted to see that.

That line about a power ring in "Museum" is Donovan's second reference to Green Lantern in his songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
coelacanth∅:

Reid's superlungs is better than Donovan's in my opinion ...maybe just because of that voice Terry's got

It's remarkable that Donovan referred to Jefferson Airplane in this song when they were largely unknown (before the group's first album!).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
Funky16Corners:

He made the scene in California.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Funky16Corners:

Earlier this week the former editor of Sixteen magazine posted a clipping about Donovan coming to a Hollywood party, playing a set from the diving board of the pool, then jumping in

I saw the 1972 film "Brother Sun, Sister Moon", but the Donovan songs in it don’t appear on its soundtrack album. For some crazy reason, he had to rerecord the songs in 2004 so he could release them as an album through iTunes!
