I was surrounded by entitled white assholes all trying to scam their way out of serving. Meanwhile, all the immigrants of every shade, shape and creed were proudly, asserting their right to participate. It was profound and inspiring.

	11:44am Dean: Long ago I served on a county superior court jury. I was foreman (foreperson, whatever). The entire jury panel was sympathetic to the plaintiffs in a PI case, but their asshole attorney was not in any mood to work, and so he offered up almost no evidence against the defendant, certainly not enough to prove liability. When I announced the verdict in favor of the defendant, the asshole judge sighed and shook his head.

	11:49am Dean: Last time reported for service was in '20, a sexual assault case. During voir dire many of the prospective jurors couldn't understand why just one inculpatory smidgen of evidence shouldn't be enough to convict. The judge asked me whatf I thought, and I went into the usual bit about the full force and resources of the state versus a lone accused person. "Spoken like a true lawyer," said the judge,"which he is." I attended the same law school as the judge.

He explained that he had served on a sexual assault panel as an alternate, and he couldn't imagine that the victim had in fact been victimized. "She wasn't that good looking," he opined. Jesus. Later, he mentioned that he was a retired police officer. @Doug/UM: I work with law students all the time. They routinely amaze and encourage me with their smarts, their ambition, their eagerness to learn. I also work with undergraduates whose goal is to get into law school. They, too, are so impressive.

	♥ 11:36am Doug Schulkind: I love jury duty, too. It is a humbling and precious honor to be included. And fascinating, too. I remember being called for jury service back in Brooklyn, NY. I was surrounded by entitled white assholes all trying to scam their way out of serving. Meanwhile, all the immigrants of every shade, shape and creed were proudly, asserting their right to participate. It was profound and inspiring.

	11:44am Dean: Long ago I served on a county superior court jury. I was foreman (foreperson, whatever). The entire jury panel was sympathetic to the plaintiffs in a PI case, but their asshole attorney was not in any mood to work, and so he offered up almost no evidence against the defendant, certainly not enough to prove liability. When I announced the verdict in favor of the defendant, the asshole judge sighed and shook his head.

During voir dire many of the prospective jurors couldn't understand why just one inculpatory smidgen of evidence shouldn't be enough to convict. The judge asked me whatf I thought, and I went into the usual bit about the full force and resources of the state versus a lone accused person. "Spoken like a true lawyer," said the judge,"which he is." I attended the same law school as the judge.

He explained that he had served on a sexual assault panel as an alternate, and he couldn't imagine that the victim had in fact been victimized. "She wasn't that good looking," he opined. Jesus. Later, he mentioned that he was a retired police officer. @Doug/UM: I work with law students all the time. They routinely amaze and encourage me with their smarts, their ambition, their eagerness to learn. I also work with undergraduates whose goal is to get into law school. They, too, are so impressive.
