Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:17am Webhamster Henry:

The early 20th c. obsession with Hawaiian-style music (if not authentic tunes) demonstrates the weird confluence of imperialism and pop culture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome welcome, Chris Albertyn!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

The prominence of steel guitar in early Hawaiian recorded music is thanks largely to the sizable Puerto Rican population that was shipped to the tropics to help with the cane sugar harvests. They brought the instrument with them.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:19am Webhamster Henry:

So the cultural imperialism is double then!
  9:19am adamdoesit:

@Doug, not just the CEO, but the flounder, too. Bit of a tyrant, able to brook no piers.

Hello Doug, missed the opening chatter but gather from the comments that Lincoln has finished studies. Guess you are going to the graduation. It is a powerful moment, I can speak from experience having been there with our three daughters.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:21am Brian in UK:

adamdoesit, glad you put that in Whiting!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Doug Schulkind:

I am but an amateur, Brian in UK. But it seems I did something right. Lincoln handed in her final paper this week and is happily coasting to the finish line. Graduation is Sunday. I promise not to get too drunk and unruly.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Lincoln did two shows with me as co-host. Back on the mothership. Both times I was basically her straight man. She got all the laughs. Here's a show I did with Lincoln when she was 7 years old: wfmu.org...

Mazel tov to all the parents of graduates! Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:36am Irene Trudel:

Happy birthday, Uncle Michael!!! Whenry, I fell asleep before Shulcoth started! I'll have to catch the archive. (Shulcoth, for the uninitiated is the celebration of our dearly departed Citizen Kafka. For several years I hosted it on WFMU, but it returned to WBAI for the first time last night)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:37am Zipperhead7:

  9:41am Mr C:
