Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm G:

Genesis started out as a project by Jonathan King, the big 1960s UK recording mogul. He picked their name. They got a demo tape to him somehow through a friend. He was an alumnus of the prep school Charterhouse (kind of the Andover of the UK), where he original band members attended at that time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...like Ike & Tina more if they sounded like Ike&Tina - but more power to her of course...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Phillippe:

Didn't Wet Leg borrow from this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm G:

@RR63: Interpersonal dynamics of groups are complicated, and often groups try to keep them in the shadows. Reading a lot about a group over the years, you can piece things together somewhat decently, often.

Genesis came from members of two Charterhouse "high-school" groups (one called Garden Wall). Two original members left early on, one to go to college, and one due to stage fright, if memory serves. So it was the three originals (Banks, Gabriel, Rutherford), plus Collins and Hackett hired in.

Banks was super bossy ("bloody minded" or stubborn was Gabriel's term, though not actually naming Banks, in an interview decades later). Banks would get Rutherford to agree with him about what to put on an album etc. etc., and then he only needed one more vote to get a majority and his way. Hackett and Collins felt like kind of outsiders/newcomers among these Charterhouse guys and didn't want to make too many waves, so Banks often got Gabriel outvoted, and got his own way. This despite the fact that Banks and Gabriel had been very very close early on.

So Gabriel sent solo in 75. Two years later, Banks and the group told Hackett he could not do any more solo work, even though they often did not accept his contributions for inclusion on albums. DRAMA!!! (There's a reason Yes used that as an album title near the end of their first run haha)

I LOVE this Esperanto. Wow. Since you are playing prog, PLEASE play some token King Crimson also? A DEEP cut?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Chris Hiatt:

Esperanto is the best prog rock band name ever. I need to do a deep dive, not super familiar with their work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Eno: May 15, 1948
Fripp: May 16, 1946
Bruford: May 17, 1949 (8?)
Toya Wilcox: May 18, 1958
  4:21pm Jon:

From the back of the cover:
"Danse Macabre" is a natural evolution from the first album "Esperanto Rock Orchestra".
The dramatic theme running though this second album reflects all aspects of Esperanto and shows a willingness to look for a definitive approach to contemporary music.
Much of this direction has come from Peter Sinfield, who has produced this album following work with King Crimson, ELP and PFM and his influence can be clearly heard throughout.
"Danse Macabre" does not require listening to and should not be played on speakers less than 8" in diameter, in airport lounges, elevators and at dinner parties or immediately after sexual congress.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:23pm steveo:

mind it? i enjoyed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm G:

@RR63: Bruford retired from durmming a few years ago (Collins shoulda done that before his health was ruined.) He then wrote a PhD dissertation. He's been on the interview circuit very recently promoting a well-curated box set of his work in many different groups and styles over the decades.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Jessie:

Fripp seems to be very trusting of Steven Wilson and the remixing of the Crimson catalog.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:15pm dale:

love whatever the synthesizer is in this elp.
  5:15pm Juki Sewer:

Hey DJ Scott Williams. Thanks for the blast from past.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:16pm steveo:

this one resonates for me
  5:16pm The Butterman:

Even Jerry was enamored with Janice. They share a wonderful moment. One of the few times Jerry was drunk. ( in Festival express)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:16pm steveo:

that's what I hear, Butterman :)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:17pm tim from washington:

@RRN - I forgot about that one. Thanks for the reminder!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Jessie, quite! Speaks volumes as to SW's cred. the man does it right.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:17pm brainiac:

When I was a kid, I thought Lucky Man was so cool.
Don't tell anyone, but I still do.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Rich in Wading River:

@Jessie I am not a fan of Wilson but I can't argue with his work on the Crimso catalog
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:19pm joe mulligan:

that little synth/moog/whatever they're playing riff at the end of "from the beginning" is one of my favorite outro jams
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Mr. Pumpy:

I recently bought an OPPO Blu-ray player and new Denon 7.2 receiver so I can finally listen to the collection of Steven Wilson 5.1 DVD-A remixes I have amassed over the years. It is difficult to find a player that handles that format. I'm usually a stereo type feller, but I'm looking forward to it.

Has anyone read the Lou Reed biography by Anthony DeCurtis that came out a couple years ago? I'm 3/4 thtough it right now. I'm really enjoying it. DeCurtis does not shy away from Lou's crappy treatment of others but it's definitely not a hatchet job by any means. I also appreciate the album by album discussion too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

When I was a kid I adored BrainSaladSurgery from start to finish - & I sill love it
- & you can tell anyone especially if it agitates them.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:21pm brainiac:

I live in fear of the day my OPPO decides to up and call it quits, Mr. Pumpy-man. I do love it so.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Mr. Pumpy:

@tim, I have not, but thanks for the recommendation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm neil quarantino:

My first concert was ELP at Upsala College

Whoa TOm Recchion was on Birdman - the major label subsidiary? Good job Birdman!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Mr. Pumpy:

brainiac, my buddy got one at a Good Will a few years ago and broke the disc tray. He sent it to them and they fixed it for free. It was after they stopped making product, so maybe they still service units. Keep the faith!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:22pm joe mulligan:

@RevRab yes! my older brother bought that album when it came out and I have very fond memories of it as a tyke. that and also Pictures at an Exhibition. and Tarkus!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Mr. Pumpy:

Tarkus has some of the greatest cover artwork of all time! And, like RevRab said, you can tell anyone, especially if it agitates them!!!
Avatar 🎸 5:25pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Clearly missed something special with that 2-minutes help thing. .. was a huge ELP nerd as a kid. Eventually grew out of all of it except Tarkus.

The keith bombast wears thin immediately now. But Tarkus seemingly still has some true guts in there...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Jessie:

@tim from washington,,You should read Howard Sounes book Notes from the Velvet Underground: The Life of Lou Reed. That is a really good read about Lou.
  5:26pm persimmon:

Listening in port angeles. Yep this is music!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Mr. Pumpy:

A great autobiography is Bill Bruford's. Highly recommended. There are some true gems about recording KC's Red. He's a great writer in his own right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Tome:

ELP was one of the only reasons I HAD to upgrade my stereo system !<>!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm McGroovey:

I somehow haven't listened to ELP since I was a teenager. That was back when teenagers listened to ELP.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:29pm tim from washington:

@Jessie - thanks for the recommendation! I realized once I started reading the Lou Reed bio that I've read a lot about the Velvet Underground but not very much about Lou's life and solo work even though I'm a big fan.
Avatar 5:30pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

I am tired of ELP, Led Zeppelin, The Who and a few others. King Crimson remains and any new stuff I hear on this station. Its more fun to discover new stuff.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Chris Hiatt:

That Nora Brown track was fantastic.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:32pm brainiac:

Laurie Anderson deserves a medal for staying with Lou 'til the end.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Mr. Pumpy:

Yes...she deserves several medals for several reasons. Wait...what was she to do, abandon him?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:34pm brainiac:

He was a thorny old cuss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Also Emerson & Lake were ♏︎Scorpio Bruthas
...& yes - the Music was all kinds of that...

I can imagine Lou & Laurie 'humanizing' each other (if I could ever be forgiven such a presumptuous utterance) in a really endearing way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah but that was Lou's thing. Like if the Parisian waiter wasn't rude you didn't get the Thing there...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Mr. Pumpy:

brainiac, I suppose, but he was her thorny old cuss. My outlook anyhow. Didn't you know I was a great romantic?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yerknow - it must be an exhausting job - Professional Contrarian...
Avatar 5:39pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

I have driven by Lou's house in NJ. It has a long driveway and is in a very rural area. Well, rural for NW NJ that is. He used to visit the Shop Rite (or was it A&P?) in Blairstown and people who worked there were told to just be cool when he came in and do not comment on his fame at ALL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Otoh he always insisted the VUs lyrics & such were not ironic - &tc. ...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:44pm brainiac:

It's funny, RevRab; I imagined them living in separate wings of the house.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Krys O.:

Thanks, Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Jessie:

@Wild Neil..Have you listened to Van Der Graaf Generator? Start with the Pawn Hearts LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm McGroovey:

Lou seemed like he was probably a WYSIWYG kind of guy. Laura A probably knew what she was getting into. And he couldn't possibly have been a d-bag 24 hours a day; only in certain situations, of the sort we all consider being unpleasant in, but decide not to be
Avatar 5:52pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Jessie-no I have not, thanks for the suggestion!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:54pm tim from washington:
