Hey Larry, seems like Donovan Leitch improves with age; bit like this station.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Brian! I agree!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm doctorjazz:

Hi Larry! I like acoustic Early Donavan too!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doc!
Avatar 🥁 3:08pm Erica:

I notice that early Donovan sounded like Bob Dylan or Don McClean.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Brian in UK:

Hearing hints of Phil Ochs on this track.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica, Dylan maybe, McLean was years off at this point. Ochs was a contemporary of Donovan's (first LP in 1964).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm coelacanth∅:

'coulda been Phil Ochs, but it was Buffy St. Marie
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:10pm WR:

Noting that Buffy St. Marie wrote and first recorded Universal Soldier.

Hey C!

hey Larry & all
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Funky16Corners:

@WR - I was planning on sharing that information at the break
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm coelacanth∅:

Donovan consciously imitated Dylan early on.

Hullo, Larry and testify clan!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Brian in UK:

dutchtheo, good trip down south?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I don't think that's a fair comparison. Donovan was feeding off of UK folkers like Davy Graham, Bert Jansch and earlier voices.
  3:12pm Andres:

Hi, Larry! Digging the music of Donovan by Donovan. :)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Mike Sin:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm coelacanth∅:

Larry the idea didn't originate in my head. but it's pretty obvious anyway, just as it was when Lennon did it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:15pm dutchtheo:

Yes, Brian, everything that makes France great.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:17pm WR:

And in contrast, Hey Gyp was written by Donovan although I mostly knew the song from the Animals version. Something I had not remembered or known.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Mike Sin:

The Blues Project's version of "Catch the Wind" is wonderful!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Brian in UK:

WR about his friend Gypsy Dave.
Donovan was a professional artiste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm coelacanth∅:

was only referring to his singing, not at all his material
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Brian in UK:

Dylan's first album was mainly covers.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Funky16Corners:

Early Dylan is great, and maybe Another Side is the early jumping off point, but I'd say with some conviction that of all the "new Dylans" anointed during the 60s, Donovan had a very solid claim to originality.
Avatar 🥁 3:24pm Erica:

Donovan's music after 1965 got more original and eclectic for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm coelacanth∅:

from wikipedia: "Cash Box described it [catch the wind] as a "medium-paced, folk-styled low-down bluesey romancer," with a Bob Dylan-like vocal.[2]"
...i'm not alone in that opinion!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm adamdoesit:

Hey Rev. Larry and sunshine superpeeps!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Funky16Corners:

Hey adamdoesit!
Avatar 🥁 3:26pm Erica:

Hearing the album version on Sunshine Superman was quite a surprise. I only heard it in Mono.
Avatar 🥁 3:27pm Erica:

(well here on WFMU anyway)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm coelacanth∅:

in any case the likeness to Dylan on a few of Donovan's early tracks is why i always liked his slightly later stuff better, including the cheesy remake of catch the wind!
i could never shake the idea that he wasn't being fully himself.
...only referring to the earliest recordings.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Funky16Corners:

I don't want to belabor the point, but in 1965 the music press - as it was - was mainly a legacy unit unprepared to deal with the new music and youth culture. To those people, every guy with an acoustic guitar looked and sounded like Bob Dylan. I'm not saying it wasn't an easy mistake to make, but I think in retrospect it doesn't hold up. One of the reasons it seems at all inauthentic is that he transformed fairly rapidly into something else entirely, as witnessed by the track that's playing now. But that, as well, is something that could be said of many of Donovan and Dylan's contemporaries.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Funky16Corners:

It also has something to do with how he was being sold by his record company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm coelacanth∅:

all that's true
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm doctorjazz:

Donavan, like anyone who played an acoustic guitar and harmonica automatically was a "Next Dylan". But from the start he was more light, whimsical, and sang "better" (that is, more conventionally better) than Dylan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm adamdoesit:

For that matter, that he transformed fairly rapidly into something else entirely could be said of Dylan, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm doctorjazz:

And Dylan got hell for it...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Funky16Corners:

Donovan also diverges from Dylan in that he was pretty much guileless. Dylan was Bowie-esque in that he was perpetually wrapped in a persona.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - The folks that gave Dylan hell were (rightly) left in the dust.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Brian in UK:

You have to remember that Donovan was under twenty when he hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm coelacanth∅:

doc, yes -from closed-minded, pretend left-wing idiots
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Funky16Corners:

Lots of stiffs were knocked on their asses by the sounds of 1965/66
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Funky16Corners:

Who knew that Donovan would stimulate such lively discussion?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Brian in UK:

Larry, perhaps the drugs have worn off!!!
  3:37pm prudy:

enjoying the show very much...thanks Larry..
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Funky16Corners:

It's weird. I didn't realize until I looked iy up recently that Donovan hasn't had a major label release in more than 25 years. Kind of sad, unless his withdrawal is voluntary.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Brian in UK:

The imagined Dylan connection did undermine him initially over here. He still hit the charts. Was it Micky Most producing?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Funky16Corners:

His Epic-era stuff was produced by Most. The earlier stuff was a couple of different people
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Funky16Corners:

Hi prudy!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:40pm WR:

I saw Donovan in 1969 and I think Shawn Phillips was with him, and I think that the flute player on that tour was well known musician as well. Will see if it is easily found online...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Funky16Corners:

@WR - That's cool! I wish I'd been around to see him then.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Funky16Corners:

Yu know what's wild? The whole time Donovan and Shawn Phillips are playing, Reverend Gary Davis is sitting right next to them listening
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Funky16Corners:

Happiness in the pipe...
Avatar 🥁 3:45pm Erica:

It will blow your mind...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Brian in UK:

This track caused a fanzine of the same name in the late 70s, kind of related to Zigzag. Which was one of the best & earliest fanzines Featuring Pete Frame's family trees
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Funky16Corners:

@Brian - Which zine?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm coelacanth∅:

i don't need to belabor it or be agreed with, but should've said this before...
i completely agree with these points made against the idea of Donovan imitating Dylan; but i should point out that after knowing only the Donovan's greatest hits album- knowing it intimately- i finally heard the original version of catch the wind, and it quickly popped into my head "he's trying to sound like Bob Dylan".
this when i was about 11-12, having never read or heard anything about that comparison. already familiar with Phil Ochs and Gordon Lightfoot and other singer-guitarists and never thinking that about anyone else.
'doesn't mean he was, "consciously", as i stated earlier; but where did that come from?
no imagined similarity.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Funky16Corners:

So much of his music from this period is "authentically" drugged out. It sounds like getting stoned, in a good way.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Brian in UK:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Funky16Corners:

That's weird, I've read a couple of Herlihy's novels and I've never heard of that one. Gonna have to find it.

Fat Angel

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Funky16Corners:

I knew of ZigZag but never heard of Fat Angel. I love those early zines.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Brian in UK:

Andy Childs of Fat Angel went on to edit Zigzag. He lived about two miles away from me.
  3:53pm David Shortell:

I didn't know "Universal Soldier" was Buffy's song. I assume the Dolph Lundgren movie had nothing to do with it!
  3:54pm Andres:

A butter promotional campaign (back in the days when big margarine was eating their market share) almost ruined this song for me. Almost.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I didn't mean to infer that you had imagined the connection. It's interesting, apparently the original recording of Catch the Wind (the one I played) was redone for his first album and they added harmonica, which suggests to me that someone wanted people to make the connection between Dono and Dylan.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm WR:

Mellow Yellow is a song that don't want to like (words seem so silly to me) but do enjoy.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Funky16Corners:

@David - I can't imagine Buffy was happy about the movie using the title (especially such a departure from her song)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Funky16Corners:

@WR - I'm with you. I tire of it easily, but enjoy it in small doses
  3:56pm David Shortell:

I think "Absolutely Fabulous"'s Patty (or was it Edy?) named her daughter Saffron from that last song.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Funky16Corners:

Edina
  3:57pm Andres:

I was just wondering that, David.
Avatar 🥁 3:58pm Erica:

Not to change the mood but we not only lost actor Ray Liotta today but also Alan White, drummer of YES and Andrew Fletcher from Depeche Mode all in the same day.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Funky16Corners:

Which is ironic, since Joanna Lumley (Patsy) was 100% on the scene in the mid 60s as a fashion model. She probably partied with Donovan (or at least Donovan adjacent)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - yeah, bad day
  3:59pm David Shortell:

If I didn't hear wrong, Donovan once appeared on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. I don't know what he sang though.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Funky16Corners:

There's an appearance on the Smothers Brothers show where they give hi a big chunk of time. He did several songs, including a trio with Mary Travers and Jennifer Warnes
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Brian in UK:

It was a scene, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm coelacanth∅:

Larry (@354) that's the version i heard, when i was little and thought that. with harmonica.
  4:02pm Andres:

Sand and Foam was one of your faves if I recall correctly, Larry. Enjoyed his original take on it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Funky16Corners:

@Andres - Absolutely my fave Donovan song!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I'm not sure if I have that version anywhere. I need to check
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm doctorjazz:

Hint at Pretty Flamingo?...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Mike Sin:

What's interesting about Donovan as well is that he is quick to sing the praises of Mickie Most, his producer. He was very free with the accolades and basically handed over half of the greatness of "Hurdy Gurdy Man" to Most as he has a lot of the arrangement ideas.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - The chords sound similar
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Mike!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Funky16Corners:

He had the cream of UK rock sessioners to work with, too. Lots of heavies on this album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm doctorjazz:

Larry, I found more of those Stryker-Slagle Band CD's, going away for the weekend, but I'll rip and send them.
(going to the Solid Sounds Festival in North Adams, Mass tonight. Unfortunately, it's an outdoor festival for the most part, and the forecast for tomorrow and Saturday is for rain/thunderstorms, we'll see how it goes...)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Brian in UK:

Donovan was enjoying the scene but could take it in & make a song out what ever went on.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Funky16Corners:

Good for Donovan, helping to keep the word "epistle" alive in the 20th Century
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - Have fun. I hope the weather holds up
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Funky16Corners:

I knew this song as a perfume commercial before I knew who Donovan was
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Brian in UK:

Gift was a serious box affair.
  4:09pm Andres:

The bass, drums and production in general of Epistle to Dipsy sounded like it could’ve been an indie rock hit of the past couple decades.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Funky16Corners:

@Andres - There's another one coming up in the last set that has that vibe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm doctorjazz:

To belabor a point already belabored (as I am wont to do), while Donovan was one of many folk singers marketed as "The New Dylan", nobody took him quite as seriously or really thought of him as the return of the Messiah, as they did of Dylan (and, consequently, nobody was too upset with Epistle to Dippy or Mellow Yellow, while Dylan was a deserter when he went Rock n' Roll).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - Good point.
Avatar 🥁 4:14pm Erica:

It seems that we're all using the word belabor to argue our opinions today.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Funky16Corners:

Aren't we an articulate bunch?
Avatar 🥁 4:14pm Erica:

Love the Hurdy Gurdy Man album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm adamdoesit:

Sometimes it's more fun to belabor than to do labor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm coelacanth∅:

good point doc
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Funky16Corners:

Indeed
Avatar 🥁 4:15pm Erica:

Haha adam.
  4:15pm Andres:

Belle + Sebastian certainly vibe with Jennifer Juniper.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Brian in UK:

Belabor was a character in Lord of the Rings. Brother of Gwilam of the valleys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm doctorjazz:

No Labor until Tuesday (except laboring to get from stage to stage...) 😊
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Brian in UK:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Brian in UK:

doctorjazz, enjoy the weekend, hope it stays dry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm doctorjazz:

Got my rain gear, Hiking shoes, multiple WFMU tee shirts and fleece hoodies, prepared!
Avatar 🥁 4:19pm David Shortell:

Did Donovan become disillusioned with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi like the Beatles?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm coelacanth∅:

i detested mellow yellow until i learned what it was about!
then i respected it; but still don't want to hear it much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm coelacanth∅:

David Shortell i've wondered that also
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm adamdoesit:

It's Belabor Day Weekend! (Bylybour-son-of-Gwilam Day for BiUK.)

Somehow I'm still not tired of Mellow Yellow. Something about a marching bass and a girl called Saffron delights me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm doctorjazz:

Did some weeding in my raised garden earlier, pooped out, will try to weed some more (will listen on the phone).
(garden is left over from my daughter's COViD retreat from Manhattan to our home, she was the gardener. Figure I'll give it a try now that she's back in the Big Apple).
  4:24pm prudy:

yep,,Love's Baby Soft...cheesy staple (for some of us) from the 70's
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Mike Sin:

All right! Two hours of Liberace coming up next week?!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Funky16Corners:

@David - I don't recall Dono mentioning the Maharishi after his trip to Rishikesh
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Funky16Corners:

@MIke - I'm saving that for a very special occasion!
Avatar 🥁 4:27pm Erica:

Wow the stereo mix of Hurdy Gurdy Man is trippier than in mono. You can hear that sitar.
Avatar 🥁 4:27pm Erica:

And that guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Mike Sin:

Donovan featured that large picture of him and the Maharishi on the back of the "A Gift from a Flower to a Garden" box set.
Avatar 🥁 4:28pm Erica:

Obviously you can hear it in mono but the instruments really shine in stereo.

It looks like Donovan with a group called No Angels
Avatar 4:44pm Vincent The Soul Chef:

I haven't heard this record in years! Wow!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:45pm WR:

My perception of Donovan's Atlantis was warped and added enjoyment after seeing the Futurama episode.

@Brian - I often marvel at the ages of some of the 60s great musicians when they were at their peak.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Funky16Corners:

@WR - I almost recorded the Futurama version!
Avatar 🥁 4:45pm David Shortell:

Like many, I will forever envision Billy Batts getting stomped to death when I hear this song. Is this a sort of memorial to Ray Liotta?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Funky16Corners:

Oh wait, was it in Goodfellas? My bad! RIP Ray...
Avatar 🥁 4:46pm Erica:

Look up the soundtrack to Atlantis the Lost Empire Larry.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Funky16Corners:

I'm pretty sure Gainsbourg heard this before he recorded Melody Nelson
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Funky16Corners:

@David - You're right, Goodfellas! For some reason I associated with the savage beating of Joe Pesci in Casino. Similar scene, different song.

Larry if memory serves the cover to HMS Donovan was painted by Patrick who did the Humblebums covers. A Scottish connection?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Funky16Corners:

@Brian - I'm not sure. I should look that up!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Brian in UK:

Avatar 🥁 4:56pm David Shortell:

I heard Donovan raised Brian Jones' son Julian, but not his own actor kids Donovan Leitch and Ione Skye.

Thank you all for listening!

Thanks C! Erica
Avatar 🥁 4:56pm Erica:

Hearing Donovan's music is always enjoyable.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Funky16Corners:

@David - I think Dono Jr and Ione were raised in the US by their Mom. Donovan married Brian's ex and raised his son as his own.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm WR:

Thank you Larry!
Avatar 🥁 4:57pm Erica:
