Afternoon, Doug and all—sad for the occasion but glad for the steady hand on the tone arm.
  2:03pm bigplanetnoise:

Good afternoon, Doug! Looking forward to the tribute -
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:04pm WR:

Hello Doug and drummer streamers.

Grachan Moncur III!

Condolences to the family.

In remembrance let's Celebrate the Life and Music!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:04pm alanr:

perfect timing...with no disrespect, I will be doing my Saturday housecleaning a bit later than normal, but in sync with this tribute show to a great musician. Thanks for putting this together, Doug. He played with all the greats, so, this show is going to be awesome! RIP Grachan!!!
  2:04pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Doug! Happy Saturday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, listener james! bigplanetnoise! WR! alanr! I have almost no voice, but nothing will keep me from expressing my love for this brilliant artist.
  2:05pm Gina Bacon:

Hi BPN!
  2:05pm Gina Bacon:

Thank you for this.
  2:05pm bigplanetnoise:

Howdy, GFB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Wait! Is that THE Gina Bacon?!?
Avatar 2:06pm Bob Brainen:

Thanks Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Thank you, Bobby bubby!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Andrew Waterloo:

good afternoon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Woo hoo to you, Andrew Waterloo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Doug Schulkind:

These compositions are more like mini-dramas than just songs. Theater set pieces. Action! Emotion! Conflict! Revelation!
  2:18pm Jeff g. via app:

And on his birthday, no less. ‘Tis Grachan Moncur III Day, alas. Thanks, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff g. via app
You will be celebrating happier birthday tidings with your massive, five-hour Anthony Braxton blow-out on this, his 77th birthday. Can't wait to hear your show beginning at 7pm (ET).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Doug Schulkind:

Funny. This trombone opening sometimes makes me think of the music in Close Encounters of the Kind when the alien ship is landing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Uncle Michael:

I didn't get the memo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Will send in triplicate next time, Uncle Michael.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:33pm alanr:

@Jeff g. via app OMG! 5 hours of Braxton! This is almost too much to take in on one session....the brain at some point, for those who really listen, will be exhausted....or maybe regenerated. On the other hand, even though I am a vegetarian, could Braxton's music make me crave a Big Mac?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:35pm alanr:

I want to share a posting on Facebook from Steve Swell: "I don't know where to start. Grachan Moncur III passed away yesterday. In the 70s I went to free classes on the Upper West Side presented by Jazz Interactions where Roswell Rudd was the trombone teacher. When he couldn't make it, Grachan was his sub. What Grachan gave me is beyond what I think is even discussed these days. For an improvising trombonist he got all of us in touch and connected with a full body sense of yourself when you played. He did this by having us play tunes like Donna Lee and Confirmation (which I still practice today) in alternate positions. Which means that the same notes "normally" played on the trombone can be played further out on the slide, rather than closer, bringing more of your whole body into playing as you stretched your arm out for those positions. If I'm playing out in 5th, 6th or 7th position for a protracted period of time, you can't help but to have your entire body more engaged in your playing. I believe that this has had a real effect on how I play and improvise. I was also fortunate, thanks to William Parker, to get to perform with him a number of years later. He was also a composer that was original and prolific bridging many of the styles that were being developed early on in this music. A truly brlliant musician and composer. Rest in Peace Sir."

Hi Doug, Drummers!
I posted this NPR tribute on Bob's show, but this is a good place to post it as well.
www.npr.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for sharing that, alanr!

Thanks for sharing that, doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Doug Schulkind:

Grachan Moncur sounded like he was eight feet tall on that piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Doug and all

rest in peace Grachan Moncur III
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Doug Schulkind:

Welc∅me welc∅me, coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm coelacanth∅:

(and Thanks to Scott McDowell for turning me on to him finally, so many years ago)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Will the Sound Guy:

I have to cut out... Ill check the archive!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Doug Schulkind:

I wonder if there was anything particular Rudy Van Gelder did in his recording set-up that enhanced Moncur's sense of stature on these numbers. It sounds like he is towering above the rest of the musicians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Peace and love to you, Will the Sound Guy. Happy travels.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:49pm WR:

@2:35 @alanr: Thank you for sharing that tribute note from Steve Swell. I was very happy to get to ser Moncur III a few times in early aughts. He was such a presence, moving everyone in the room with his playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Doug Schulkind:

This audacious music was recorded in 1967 and remained in the vaults for 17 insane years before being inauspiciously released as part of a bargain two-fer. Absurd!!!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:58pm WR:

I assume the opposite Doug. That Gelder had to struggle to balance the rest of the group with Moncur's Jubalation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Doug Schulkind:

@WR
You're probably right. Van Gelder felt he had to fashion a lid for the pressure cooker that was Moncur's presence in the studio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Doug Schulkind:

One thinks Fela Kuta patterned his smoky tenor sound after Archie Shepp.

One = me
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:07pm chresti:

Hi Doug and drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Oh hey, chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm fred:

I don't know how to get it right, so I'll get it wrong. I first heard of Grachan Moncur from Scott McDowell's show, specifically as as segue from Hatikvah to Hypnosis. These two are one for me. People who think that soils your heritage, I don't know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Right you are, fred. Scott McDowell has used "Hipnosis" as his opening theme to The Long Rally for years. Amazing piece.
  3:41pm Robm:

Hey fellow listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Doug Schulkind:

There's a nice mohair cushion ready for you in the front row, Robm. Careful, the punchbowl has been spiked.
  3:43pm Robm:

@Doug don’t mind it spiked:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet here.
  3:53pm DavidJ:

Thank you for this Doug, wonderful tribute…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Doug Schulkind:

A bittersweet effort, DavidJ. Glad you're keeping me company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm fred:

@Doug: So you say you're filing in, but where's the beard?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Doug Schulkind:

@fred
Does my unruly stubble count at all?
  4:01pm bigplanetnoise:

Unruly Stubble. That first album.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Andrew in Toronto:

Good afternoon Doug and all other listeners!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Unruly Stubble sound like the name of an ol' moonshiner deep in the Kentucky hollows.

Greetings, Andrew in Toronto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm fred:

@Doug: Compared to Dave? OK, you get the Morrissey participation trophy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Otherwise known as Reverend Stubble on Sunday mornings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm fred:

That Morrissey trophy also explains why Unruly Stubble never caught up in high school. That hit too close to home, but denying it happened? If all band members agree, OK
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:16pm listener james from westwood:

Whoa, federal district court—potentially heavy stuff had it gone off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm fred:

What just happened to comments?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Doug Schulkind:

@listener james from westwood
I am still potentially on the hook for jury service. I have to be available and on-call for service over a two-week period. Have to call in Monday at 4om to find out if I am directed to serve on Wednesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Doug Schulkind:

@fred
Unruly Stubble were a bunch of pricks. Wouldn't have joined that band if you paid me.
  4:31pm DavidJ:

Frank Lowe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Don Cherry on trumpet here with Frank Lowe and Grachan Moncur III. Also Geri Allen (piano), Charnett Moffett (bass), Charles Moffett (drums)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Charnett Moffeet succumbed to heart attack back in April at the age of 54. Moncur's cause of death was also cardiac arrest, though surely the result of a number of contributing comorbidities.
Avatar 4:37pm arb:

Good afternoon friends! I dig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Every listener is outfitted with a pearl-handled trowel, arb!
  4:38pm Jeff g. via app:

Gah, anyone left from that band, Doug?
Avatar 4:39pm arb:

I could eat enough oysters to make that dream come true!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:40pm doctorjazz:

Been listening in the car, great tribute, Doug, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm fred:

@Doug: at least Unruly Stubble didn't join Muttonchops in infamy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff g. via app
You know the sad answer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Doug Schulkind:

Yay, doctorjazz! Now keep both hands on the wheel, my friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Doug Schulkind:

@arb
I like how you roll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Doug Schulkind:

"Hilda," named for Grachan's daughter who predeceased him.
  4:49pm bigplanetnoise:

I wonder what they’d call the Unruly Stubble tribute band…..
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Gina Bacon:

Unruly Stubble, Too?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Gina Bacon:

Unruly Stubble Also.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:51pm WR:

I like how ARB shucks.

And I have been enjoying evey bit of today's Moncur Celebration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Doug Schulkind:

If you enjoyed this show, you're gonna adore the next one. Someday Matinee with Gina B, live from Nashville, is up next.

The queue to enter Someday Matinee forms here: wfmu.org...

Tell the bouncer you're "on the list, plus one."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Gina Bacon:

Hahaha! Thanks, Doug! (:
  4:55pm Jeff g. via app:

Thanks, Doug. In all things, I concur with Moncur.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:56pm WR:

Have listening as wrapping up work, as ripping CDs before returning to the library, on train to library, in library, in Sunrise Mart while buying tsukemono, train home, now sitting in kitchen fully attentive.

Thank you Doug. Beautiful.

Hope you soon shake off whatever bug is bugging you.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Gina Bacon:

Thanks for filling in today with that beautiful tribute, Doug.
  4:57pm DavidJ:

Thank you Doug. New Africa with Roscoe Mitchell is a ndw revelation to me
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm listener james from westwood:

Glorious stuff, Doug—many thanks!
