Sally Bowles has been coming up a lot for me lately. I finally saw "Cabaret" and finally read Isherwood's stories about Sally—then looked into Jean Ross, who inspired the character. Bob Brainin has been doing a Herbie Nichols feature on his show fro quite a few weeks now, going through his discography.
Don't know if you'll get to them, but the Herbie Nichols Project put out some good albums of his stuff (the band I first heard Ben Allison, Frank Kimbrough, Ted Nash and some other fine musicians in).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
StringOFperils:

Chris Isherwood's I Am A Camera is a piece of fiction, and a very good one. I don't think it was meant as reportage. Just a poetic distillation of the thoughts of a quiet little man, teaching English, and jotting down his thoughts while finding himself in a disintegrating world. Self-important journalists would do better applying themselves to stopping the dark things he was alluding to.

Never enough Nichols. I have been entranced by his playing and compositions ever since reading AB Spellman's Black Music, Four Lives (later re-sold under the title Four Lives in the Bebop Business). One of the chapters was about Nichols.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am

The slight revival of Hassan Ibn Ali is analogous to the Herbie Nichols revival of a while ago. However, there is even less officially recorded Hassan. The recent Omnivore release of his solo work (Jeff has played) is amazing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am

Yes. That new Omnivore release of unheard Hassan is a revelation. Speaking of revelations, Mr Bongo will be releasing on 9 September a never-before-heard 1969 recording from Horace Tapscott. From the same group that performed the monumental The Giant Is Awakened session: us.mrbongo.com...
Avatar 10:53am

I guess one difference is that Hassan was more of a performer, whereas Nichols left a lot of compositions that we're now able to hear in new performances.

I went to high school with Doug and I wanted in the Ho-monks SO BAD!! But the day of my audition, the student council vice president simply refused to count my vote and I was unable to make an orderly transition into the band. If memory serves, I believe his name was Mikey Pencil.
