Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Favoriting June 11, 2022: Robert Dick has utterly dispensed with preconceptions about what a flutist should sound like and what a flutist should play.
More than any flutist ever, Dick has reshaped the musical possibilities of the instrument, creating many thousands of new sonorities.

Rampal dipped his toe in new music among other genres. Don't forget Galway! We had two mega-celebrity solo flute players. For those of us into classical there was also Aurèle Nicolet.

Did you work with Buckner in 1984 on the LP issued by (his label?) 1750 Arch?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm
Dave Sewelson:

Dean...which LP?

Neil Rolnick et al.

1750 Arch is an address on a residential street in Berkeley, formerly Buckner's house, I believe. It's now home to a new music center affiliated with Berkeley.

Gerry from Miami:

I had the great fortune and pleasure to meet and spend time with James Newton, jazz flutist(he hates the word FLAUTIST!) back when he was just breaking into the music field in the 70s. He has been the recipient of many international awards and commissions and has recorded for several labels, including Blue Note and ECM. He has held several professorships as well. What I am curious about is whether you have ever experimented with jazz-based imprivisation during your career. Last time I checked, James was composing liturgical pieces for flute and orchestra. Having attended several of his live concerts, I can attest that he too was into extended techniques. Singing into the flute with a contrapuntal melody was one of his favorite "tricks." Thanks for your consideration and your challenging music.

Hello Dave, Esteemed Guest Robert Dick and drummer streamers. Have been listening. Working so can't be on playlist comments must. Great flute sounds. Great music.

Gerry from Miami:

Nice duet, guys! Thanks, Robert, for responding to my post about jazz flute playing. Continued success in all your musical endeavors!

Dean:

Has Robert performed at the annual Festival Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville? I have a vague recollection of hearing him live there, late '90s.
  4:06pm
Dean:

'nother question: Do you *listen* to classical music for pleasure? For instance, the Telemann Fantasias?
  4:07pm
Gerry from Miami:

Robert, ever tried the Japanese shakuhachi?
  4:09pm
Dean:

How many bar fights were provoked by an argument over the timbre of a flute?

Reminds me of a Robin Harris joke, the one about the piccolo player in church. You'll have to look it up.
