Jazz was originally a baseball term, for funky movement pitchers would get on their pitches by how they released them. Actually, the origin before that is jasm, jism, jazz, slang for sperm, and used in baseball because a funky-moving pitch seemed like it was alive. A "jazz ball," they said. -- Jazz for unusual, less formal, improvised, etc. music came a little later.

Carmichael:

Here's your answer, Ken: "In the late ‘40s, jazz seemed to be losing its cohesion. As the big band era ebbed and swing stars were dismissed as “has-beens,” tradition and modernism fought for the privilege of defining jazz. Even the word “jazz” seemed curiously pass‚ to some. So in July 1949 DownBeat took it upon itself to announce a contest for the best word to replace “jazz.” The magazine offered to pay $1,000 in cash to the person “who coins a new word to describe the music from dixieland through bop,” the headline said. Second and third prizes included the services of Charlie Barnet’s orchestra and the Nat Cole Trio for one night in one’s home. Even Norman Granz, whose Jazz at the Philharmonic tours were keeping a mass market interested in jazz, contributed $400 worth of prizes. In November came the word that the panel of judges deemed preferable to jazz: crewcut. Other alternatives included jarb, freestyle, mesmerrhythm, bix-e-bop, blip, schmoosic, and other equally contrived specimens."

Brian is not a Lyricist per se - TheBeachBoys bear the stamp of being a Pre-Dylan act. & all that implies in terms of 'Kewl' Rawk Culture. But - PetSounds is about exactly that: the Loss of Innocence - not just of Coming of Age - but of the mid1960s itself for the whole Culture - indeed the entire Modernist mid20thCentury. So ...I think this is the problem a lot of people have with them. Their Harmonies were based on the Four Freshmen where *everybody* else did two-part harmony based on the EverlyBrothers. Which Brian applied in another way entirely. Isn't all Rawk~Pop 'elementary' ?? so - I 'cringe' @ such critiques of such Genres reflexively... It's like TrumanCapote saying Kerouac was just Typing - or Sinatra saying Rawk was awful Swing. Correct on one hand - looking in entirely the wrong place on the other. Which we all do about one or the other...

So many Beach Boys recordings of the late 1960s DO NOT SOUND LIKE THE LATE '60s. Brian ignored so many period cliches. Check out the drum patterns on a lot of those songs. There's often no rock beat per se. He's using the kit as a percussion section.

Re6ecca I had a completely clogged ear for two weeks. CVS minute clinic recommended using ear drops with carbamide peroxide 6.5%. Most pharmacies should have a generic version of it. I did drops 3 times a day in both ears and used cotton balls for 10 minutes after. After a week I used an ear flush with warm water and it cleared it all up.

there's nothing petty about a decision which is the culmination of decades'worth of thinking, and it's arrogant to suggest that. i've listened to every beach boys track that's commercially available. many of them many times. the only thing i have working against my judgement is that i didn't hear it when it was first created, in the context of other music at the time.
but this applies to all music from that time; and it's easy to see the brilliance in many musicians.
and easy to hear the sophistication in the harmonies of, for example, the beatles, the zombies, peter paul & mary ... that does not exist in the beach boys.

@coela: & of course Macca & Martin also had the odd Creative success we might point to - in exactly these areas. In fact, I use them because *you* compared TheBeatles favorably to Brian & the BBoys vocally. Of course - BrianWilson had to be both Macca & Martin for himself, essentially. & - I will grant you this: TheBeatles were never statice with Arrangements - or anything. Whereas Brian arguably (or not) peaked in 1966. In fact - I did grant you that *already* in a sense.
Avatar 2:25pm

RR you've decided that my saying their harmonies were elementary means i think their vocals are "bad". this isn't the case. their vocals are perfect. i can't imagine anyone denying that. but as you said, influenced by the four freshmen. very straight-forward. barber shop quartet-like.
in my opinion, not interesting.
...and mike's and Brian's voices making me cringe is subjective. how it affects me and i never said otherwise.

if they had looked to folk songs being sung by people we'll never know the names of in the blue ridge mountain (for example) they'd have found more complex harmonies to incorporate into theirs.
