i don't know how but i learned of flo & eddie pretty early; but i can't say i ever got into them.
stereolab, on the other hand, though i knew of early, i got into very late. in fact sound-dust was my first 'lab album.
didn't know of the convoluted connection, either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm

In Atlanta in '99, Stereolab and Sonic Youth played the same bill (great show).

If your toe clicks, Doc, you might want to seek medical treatment.
  10:59pm
Dean:

The FMU twitter feed has a link to a bit by Sasha Frere-Jones about Krautroick in which he compares the genre to Stereolab. It's clear to me that SF-J knows almost nothing about Krautrock. He seems to think it's this drifty, gauzy smear, hence he points only to bands like Harmonia, Neu, Cluster, not once mentioning genuine Krautrock pioneers like Jane, Kraan, Tomorrow's Gift, etc. One shout-out to Guru Guru. Grobschnitt? Nothing.

Anyway, I don't like Stereolab.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
coelacanth∅:

Sam a lot of bands/artists i think got better and better, then slipped...so if that high point was the end, for whatever reason, we could say they just got better and better.
i think Tom Waits and Kate Bush fall into that category.
and Nick Cave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Sam Segal:

Dean! I can always count on you for a heterodox take.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Sam Segal:

Where do you wish Tom Waits would've called it quits, Coel?
  11:02pm
Dean:

That's a good thing, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Sam Segal:

Definitely a good thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
coelacanth∅:

there's no remedy for not liking stereolab, doctor. treatment centers on making the afflicted comfortable. sometimes it resolves spontaneously.
  11:05pm
Dean:

Trust me, I know well that there is no remedy for not liking Stereolab.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
coelacanth∅:

Sam i don't know. maybe Waits is still getting better; it all started sounding recycled to me though and i stopped paying attention. but i can barely tolerate some of his early stuff.
also Nick Cave - i haven't heard his latest. maybe he's still getting better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Sam Segal:

I'm not a super close listener to Nick Cave, but I did really like the Skeleton Tree album from 2016.
  11:08pm
Dean:

Waits is a real question. I think I agree with coel. At some point he lost the fire. I might home in on Frank's Wild Years, perhaps the latest one I enjoy. I love his early stuff. I've never understood the admiration of Nick Cave, whom I find pretentious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Sam Segal:

My favorite Waits album is late-period. Mule Variations from 1999.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
chresti:

You got any drifty, gauzy smear music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
coelacanth∅:

i'll say, in any case, and possibly for no one's benefit, that peng! (the first album) is my favorite stereolab album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Sam Segal:

@chresti, I feel like the Sparkling Wide Pressure may have fit your description.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
~!K∑~:

Drifty and smeary? Like my brain?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
doctorjazz:

I'm also in agreement on Waits, really liked his early stuff, liked when he started to "take it out", but it also started losing my interest after a short while.

Stereolab is one of those bands where I feel like I SHOULD like them, I'm missing something, not appreciating something I should get (old Jewish guilt flaring up). Radiohead affects me the same way; hip, feel like I should appreciate them, have 2 albums, just never did it for me.
N-E-S-T-L-E-S, Nestles is the very best...
Avatar 11:12pm
northguineahills:

That was the SF-J article that came out in the 90s, right? If so, (I can't remember which rag I read it in), it was really my only touchstone to Krautrock, until I was able to really start finding other krautrock recs on my own around 2000. TBH, Stereolab only has one (17 min) track that be considered a simulacrum to krautock.
Avatar 11:13pm
northguineahills:

until 2000, the only recs I could find were cluster and neu!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
coelacanth∅:

i really like from swordfishtrombones all the way through mule variations, though i think the latter has some filler
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
zzz:

nothing tops Rain Dogs for me, but i am far from a Waits expert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
doctorjazz:

Liked Swordfishtrombones as well...
  11:14pm
Dean:

We're making progress here. Mule Variations was the moment when I started to doubt.

My touchstone to Krautrock was c.'76, a buddy in high school who bought tons of it. I borrowed it all. For me one of the pinnacles of German progressive rock is Epitaph. Nobody mentions them these days.

Yeah, Rain Dogs...killer album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
zzz:

Alice / Blood Money i also really liked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
coelacanth∅:

haha, doc - it is decidedly NOT hip to like radiohead in wfmuland!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
doctorjazz:

I missed Krautrock until Flash Strap ran a few good features on it, got the Brain Box and some other albums to catch up.
  11:15pm
Dean:

I'm not Jewish by any stretch, but I suffer from the same guilt, doctorjazz. "Maybe I'm ... [gasp] ... wrong!"
  11:16pm
Dean:

Played tracks from the Brain Box just last night! We're nothing if not predictable around here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
coelacanth∅:

doc, i think if you *don't* like stereolab, then you *shouldn't* like stereolab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
doctorjazz:

Dean will object, but this Evergreen is quite a trip over headphones (which is the only way to listen this late in Chez Doctorjazz).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
coelacanth∅:

...my list of artists i don't care for that are fashionable to rave about on these here comments boards is probably 20-long!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
doctorjazz:

Of course, Coela, but there's that nagging feeling that there's something great that's just not clicking in for me (that happens-I remember starting to listen to jazz, got Dizzy Gillespie in an instant, didn't get Charlie Parker right away, took a bit of listening to realize he was IT)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
coelacanth∅:

heh, and maybe it's true! but then, think of all the tons of artists you *do* like - so many of which so many other people *don't* get
  11:20pm
Dean:

I don't object, doc, except that I'll never know how trippy it is over headphones. By the way, a close friend whom I hadn't seen for a long time stayed with us two weekends ago. I played CDs and LPs for him, because that's what we did way back in the day. He was blown away by the stereo setup: wide separation, transparent aural "view" to the instruments. Made my day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
doctorjazz:

(and lots of Phil Schapp's Bird Flight)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
coelacanth∅:

...of course, this doesn't apply to me because i've thoroughly examined everything and my opinion is correct and final

I haven't used my stereo setup since i was in Brooklyn.... (i'll need to rectify that...when I'm back in Brooklyn).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm

When my wife first came to my bachelor apartment, Dean, and I played some music from what was then my beginning audiophile system, she made some comment, something about being able to see/hear where all the musicians were. That was either brilliant on her part, or Kismet (of course, she had no idea of what she was getting into).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
doctorjazz:

ngh, you going back to Brooklyn? (I've been in New Jersey for 25 years, still feel like a Brooklynite).
  11:26pm
Dean:

I say it was brilliant, a frank observation about technology that I certainly wasn't prepared to make until I'd been tutored.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Sam Segal:

This one is trippy through headphones.
Avatar 11:27pm

@drjazz: If all goes well. I should be healthy enough to start working again in November, then I need to save money to get back to where I belong, so, summer 2023 is my goal (i was functionally blind until 3 weeks ago, and only had two working eyes as of 7 hours ago).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm

and by the way, dr.j, i'm fairly certain i still don't "get" Bird. i like him; and occasionally i'm in awe of the subtleties of his playing...but i don't think i'm seeing the whole picture.

NGH, that's great! Good luck with it all!
Coela, listened to a ton of Bird-I can sing many of his solos note for note (that's lots of listening).
I took jazz guitar lessons for a while (I was a bit older-there was no way I had the time to practice enough to master it, gave up after about a year). But, even my less than half speed attempts to play Bird transcribed solos during that time also gave me much appreciation.

Heard Jim Black at a tiny bar in Albany, just north of Berkeley, not too many years ago. Prior to that I'm pretty sure he was the drummer for Don Byron with Uri Caine at an outdoor show at Skirball Center in Los Angeles.

I usually stay up late as it's my only course to retain my sanity in my current abode , sleep be damned. I read while woofmooing, then watch something on my laptop. I get up at 4:30 to exercise then eat. I might sneak a two hour nap in. Every three days I try to get at least 506 hours of sleep. (probably why I slept 12-14 hrs when I was quarentined).

Mostly stretching, working on abs, back, and upper body, and squats. I'm not someone who usually cares about how I look, but after the scare I had last fall, I need to take care of my body. Luckily, there are some residual signs of the footie player I used to be....
