Thanks for persisting with this !
...Yeah so - being already a JulianCope fan - being introduced to KevinAyers seemed a surprise ! (Tho I've never read of a direct influence acknowledged there??) I had seen the June 1, 1974 album & there's SoftMachine... & any friend of SydBarrett is a friend of mine...

Don't know what was distracting me last week but getting a lot more from this this week.

Thank you. Deeply enjoying this. I previously (the 70s) kinda skipped over Slap Happy and Henry Cow due to various life distractions and despite my partner having some recordings had yet to go through them.

Another corner of the music world I missed-really like this Slapp Happy track!

Dean:

At the time we all thought HC & SH were bands that more or less noodled around to no effect. You know, they weren't Camel. Boy, were we wrong. I've since corrected course and acquired box sets of both bands.

WR:

Glad I moved to head phones (since I don't have good hi fi like Dean) in time for this Just a Conversation tune.
  8:59pm
Dean:

Ironically, when I tune into WFMU I'm on my Chromebook or an office Mac, both with miserably sucky sound. I pretty much refuse to plug in streaming devices to my SACD player, which will accommodate them.
  9:02pm
Dean:

Listened earlier today to Weather Report's live album, 8:30, vinyl, engineered by an acquaintance who ran a stereo store down the street, but who died early last year. Holy f-ing moly, a phenomenal recording achievement.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
WR:

On "Wrong Again", discogs credits Kevin Ayers on bass, the vocal, almost Ayers, but perhaps Moore channelling Ayers.

I'm usually listening to WFMU on one of my android devices, which have sound quality ranging from AM radio like to maybe FM quality between the three. Have recently started doing my better Windows laptop via desktop speakers or head phones. Not outstanding but at least getting more of the low and high frequencies.

I have ancient decent quality sound equipment (30+ years old) which has been in storage for for 15 years. Likely dysfunctional by now.

You know, I've never listened to that Weather Report album.
  9:15pm
Dean:

My stereo gear is quite old, not counting recent upgrades. I know that newer gear would improve the sound substantially, but I gotta say that my 40yo turntable delivers astonishing sound.

I'd heard the live WR album when it was issued, because I was retailing records. At the time I didn't care much for it. These days I dig it.
  9:18pm
Dean:

Amps=30yo; speakers=20yo;preamp=35-ish;SACD player=2yo;subwoofer=15yo.

Old gear, stunningly beautiful sound after I got a new cartridge and various infrastructural turntable components.

Hey Dean!
Getting my CD/SACD player tomorrow! Psyched.
Mostly pretty old gear in my place as well.
Loving Slapp Happy (don't know any of this stuff).
  9:26pm
Dean:

Congrats, docjazz. I imagine you'll first be impressed by its mass, something like 30 pounds? It's a hefty unit, with two power supplies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
doctorjazz:

Downloading, ripping, sending music files while I listen.
(Dean, I thought you could stream through the SACD)
  9:32pm
Dean:

I can, docjazz, but I generally choose not to do so. I prefer objects. I also enjoy the crusty sound of PC playback, which reminds me of my youth when I listened to AM and FM,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
doctorjazz:

Listening through a PC now (through a DAC, jitter reducer, headphone amp, Shure over ear headphones). Sometimes I just stream and listen through the speaker on my phone, but I still like better sound if I can swing it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
WR:

LOL, Dean, I have a 10+ year old android phone that no longer has active SIM that I sometimes use as my "AM transistor radio " for listening to the rock & soul WFMU stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
doctorjazz:

That was a great interview!
