"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avrilinmay:

so I'll start from the language I know best (which is french) . "Tant mieux" like in this instance, is to say that "it is "better" that X happened because it would have been worse if Y had happened instead, even though X is something that is not good to begin with". so if you see what I meant by it when I said it earlier, if "all the better" is the usual equivalent that is used in English, or in the US, I'd go with it .. but I am a bit uncertain (sorry! :p ) . They all sound to me like conveying a meaning that is closer to a total positive, while 'tant mieux' implies that we are not all satisfied with the situation, it's just more encouraging to say it than something else completely negative.
(BUT there are other contexts of course where it is use simply to say that something is positive and we are glad that it is the case)
As for "tant pis" they are constructed very similarly granarically but are not perfect antonyms (tant pis basically means "fuck it" )

W east & K west of the Mississippi ?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:25am
Krys O.:

Yes, Handy. And..

Incidentally, radio call signs are reversed out on the ocean. Ship radios on America’s Pacific coast start with W, and with K on the Atlantic side [7]. It’s unclear whether this practise, which precedes call signs for terrestrial radio, is the reverse by intention (i.e. to facilitate the distinction between radio stations on land and at sea) or, as some sources state, the result of miscommunication. In the latter scenario, the aim was to extend W call signs to radio stations on land in the west of the country, and K to terrestrial stations in the east – but the instructions got scrambled somewhere between the draft of the order and its implementation.
