Would posit that 'I Can't Explain' is *thee* Single that moves Rawk Drumming beyond the Ringo era (Ringo Rules - you know what I mean...)

Story of course is Beatles complained that Motown in the USA was getting all this mad Bass into their records & they were frustrated. Starting 1966 w/ the Paperback Writer / Rain single - they used a Bass Amp speaker as a microphone (mics & speakers are the same idea in reverse...) to try & get more. Then in '67 with Pepper Paul began plugging his Bass straight into the board - & recording that later with the privilege of really working out his parts. His use of Rick Basses went right along with this ...correct this as necessary...

@Revolution Rabbit: It was Toots Thielemans' endorsement of Rickenbacker that was the key. That 325 John ended up with was part of a trade show display when Toots was an endorser (one of the first), and somehow that guitar got to Germany. There is a photo of that same guitar in the trade show display, and when Lennon got it he endlessly modified and changed it around. I think John Hall from Rickenbacker showed up at the NYC hotel when the Beatles did Sullivan and gave George the new 12-string hoping for an endorsement after seeing Lennon playing that 325 which he had painted by that time.

I think Rickenbacker sent the Beatles a couple of guitars, unsolicited. The guys liked the guitars.

The guitar was given to him by Francis C. Hall, owner and president of the California-based Rickenbacker company, which is now celebrating its 85th anniversary.Hall spoke to Brian Epstein before the Beatles arrived in the U.S. and arranged a meeting with the group. On February 8 at the Savoy Hilton in New York City, he showed the band several different models. Lennon tried out the 360/12 but thought it would be better for Harrison, who was sick in bed at the Plaza Hotel. When Harrison finally got to see it, he loved it immediately.

Lennon was a fan of Toots Thielemans' harmonica playing and saw the brand through him, I believe. Then when he saw the 325, and tried it, the smaller size fit his playing style perfectly and he got it. But it's odd that Toots Thielemans of all artists was a part of how Lennon got that 325

I always wanted a 325 because of Lennon. When I had just turned 18 I walked into a music store that had a Lennon model 325. I was blown away until I picked it up to play it. Very, very tight fit in the frets, much smaller than it looks in the photos of John (and John Fogerty) playing them. I no longer wanted one because it was too small. Yeah, frets up the neck are tight on 3/4 necks. (I have a couple around for the grandkids when they visit.) I have trouble doing bar or power chords on the frets of the wide end of the neck. Small hands, short fingers (especially for a former goalkeeper) with the limberness of a now nearly 63-year-old.

Not so much the chords as reaching for the fourth fret up from the barre on the rhythm.

@gf2002: that built-in circuit board in the McGuinn “Signature” model 12-strings emulated the sound of two compression pedals chained together. Handy, I don't call myself a musician yet. Just some jackass with a guitar.

One day I brought my Rick (and an amp) to school to let the kids in my first grade class play it, and they lost their minds. The fireglow was a big hit.

@clarke, I'm a (mostly) long term substitute teacher, so last year I was in a first grade class, and three years in a row I was the music teacher--only K and 1st grade. Blew a lot of minds with music they never would have heard or seen!

that was cute though I question the wisdom of covering Dr. Feelgood and lowering the flame.

Oh, Kevin, K8 will be at Mama Tried like 3-7 for some bands, and then afterward Terre T and Vicki V are spinning, I believe. I don't think I'm likely to make it down.

Ric's: It's all what you play'em through. Super cheaply made in the early days (plywood bodies). Interesting passage in Elvis Costello's book about a red one he purchased (supposedly belonged to George Harrison) & eventually returned way back when because he found it to be horrible to play. They're better built now & way more pricey. My love's got an '89 John Lennon Model here a 350V6 I believe it to be known as officially. Versatile with the proper amp, & or, pedals.
