I respect your independence, WR. When it comes to the decision of whether or not to listen to me, never listen to me.

NGH, rw, let me know if the stream issues persist. Everything seems good on my end.

Thanks! Good evening!

WR:

Now, you are going to make me cry again. I did last night when I heard she passed. I did this morning when I read an Arts for Art email quoting how Jaime Branch describe what Fly or Die is all about.

PS: I didn't hear any stream drop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Sam Segal:

Honestly too sad to do a full tribute show, but I felt like I had to start the night with her music. Such a monumental loss.
  10:08pm
rw:

Oh, man. That IS sad. I had only become aware of her recently. Way too young.
Avatar 10:09pm
still b/p:

Wasn't familiar, but saw the obit today. Sad..the photos and info make one think about the talent and energy matched rightly to what she was doing, and an extra sad note that concerts were on the schedule ahead.
And that was a fine track.
  10:10pm
rw:

As I said, I had only become aware recently, but from what little I know she seemed so full of life.

@SBP, well said about jaimie branch's energy. Her presence as a live performer was so unique. Her loss is such a huge shock to the whole scene.

thanks for posting WR. will be hard to listen to for sure. was lucky to see JB perform a few times, an unforgettable performance with the fly or die group at Nublu during the winter jazz fest a few years ago and more recently about a year ago at an outdoor early afternoon show in the east village in a trio with mike pride and luke stewart. what a major force, really the real deal. heartbreaking loss.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Sam Segal:

It was, WR. Part of a multi-media piece Matana Roberts was working on titled, "I Call America." Great, politically radical music. That was a cool thing about JB...she embraced the radical politics of the free jazz tradition.

zzz:

btw @Sam, my marathon swag came in the other day and with it your premium CD, really great stuff! i was thrilled to see/hear the ambarchi & avinaim track on there, very formative album for
me— when is was first getting into the downtown stuff a ways back there was a short line from zorn/the gift to masada to the other RJC stuff. when i landed on that ambarchi i was in awe, confused but transfixed by it, totally blew the doors wide open
Avatar 11:08pm

i got reallllly lucky, i got my swag in late april (fastest ever)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
doctorjazz in the Berkshires:

Ehrlich and the DWE are great (have that album).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
doctorjazz in the Berkshires:

And Newton (have this too), up my alley!,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Sam Segal:

Oh man, so glad that selection in particular resonated with you, zzz. I wondered if it was too long to put on the mix, but I felt like I had to include something from that album. Ambarchi's connection to the radical Jewish culture scene is interesting to me, because he doesn't seem to lean into his Jewish identity much now, but he was at one time quite devout...I believe he spent some time learning in a yeshiva in his youth--out of choice, not because he was raised Orthodox. That is my understanding of his biography based on a chance encounter I once had with his mother while we were both eating by ourselves at the 2nd Avenue Deli. That story is too long to get into here, but I had like a 60-minute conversation with his mom once...when it started, I had no idea she was the mother of Oren Ambarchi.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
WR:

I just got my swag last week, have hardly had time to listen to any of it yet.

I am using the kitchen mitt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Sam Segal:

@Doc, I picked the Newton and Ehrlich tracks because they both feature Abdul Wadud, who just passed away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
doctorjazz in the Berkshires:

Haven't gotten to my Swag either, aside from the cooking great. Wadud is big on these tracks!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
WR:

That's interesting Sam. Curious how random sharing table or counter space at the Deli got around to music and etc. Hope to hear the story sometime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Sam Segal:

She started telling me how she was in town to see her son perform at a gala at a space in Downtown Brooklyn, which was honoring some composer she'd never heard of. I remembered that Oren Ambarchi was performing at an ISSUE Project Room gala in honor of Alvin Lucier, and I noticed the woman had an Australian accent, so I just asked her if her son was Oren Ambarchi. Then she told me his life story, hers, and a few other family members' as well haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
zzz:

ha! sounds like a great story. yeah my understanding is he spent time at chabad yeshiva, i think i recall reading that maybe in the brief liners. the concepts go over my head a bit but the song cycle is inspired by hasidic mystical philosophy of chabad, the founder of which is pictured on the cover. anyways, love that album it is so intense and so good

Great deli encounter Sam. So many things had to align for you to let her know that indeed some random person in NYC knows the music that her son has chosen for his life work. Job well done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm

I was so second-hand star struck by the encounter, I hadn't even thought about it like that, WR, but you make a great point.
