Good Hello.
  6:01pm
Charles:

Just a minute ladies and gentlemen, I think something is happening.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:02pm
Austin Rich:

Here's a little info about Casseroles:

Hey Austin! "Tempest in a Casseroleโ€œ - Ha, what a name.
  6:02pm
Charles:

Tempest in uhhhh Casserole
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:03pm
Austin Rich:

The modern sense of the word "casserole" comes from the late 1870s, but something similar has existed for thousands of years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
Scott67:

G'day Austin & Audience!

Seems that historians are - ahem - "out to lunch" regarding where, regionally, they come from. "Europe" is as specific as most folks get, but these days, the dish is more or less has worldwide usage.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
Austin Rich:

Yet another late 40's "questionable" accent.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:05pm
Austin Rich:

His description of "bad business" sounds like good business in most coffee shops.
  6:06pm
Charles:

That wraps it up for today's Box 13 then. Problem solved.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Austin Rich:

Nice to see Charles, Mr. Fab and Scott67! It's been a while since I've done a "normal" Dimestore.

Charles and I should re-edit all the Box 13 episodes to make them about five minutes long, for the "on-the-go" radio drama enthusiast of the modern era.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
Austin Rich:

"Is there a story in it?" Suzy can burn better than her casseroles.
Avatar 6:11pm
Mr Fab:

i'm guessing Greek?
  6:12pm
Charles:

Good idea! We can edit together the intro part where someone asks Dan for help and then right away cut to the moment Dan gets hit behind the head.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:12pm
Austin Rich:

Sort of sounds Greek.

Ish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
Scott67:

Something terrible has happened!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
Scott67:

That accent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm
Scott67:

He's become Mexican parody now.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:16pm
Austin Rich:

Do you think the 13 of his Box number attracts all the strange cases and stories? I wonder if Dan had rented Box 12, if the should WOULD only be five minutes each week.
Avatar 6:18pm
zivilars:

Hi everyone, thanks for the show, Austin! Always trying to stay up as long as possible in my late night time zone for Dimestore Radio Theater
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm
Austin Rich:

Suzy might be dim as a character, but her patience with Dan proves she's operating on another level.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Austin Rich:

Nice to see you in the chat, zivilars! Though my show is moving even later, unfortunately! (My job is forcing me to push it all later.)
Avatar 6:20pm
Mr Fab:

I had a Greek uncle, but he didn't refer to himself in the third person.
Avatar 6:20pm
zivilars:

even later? that sucks for me, already 0:20 here at the moment now ... But well, there's always the archives, although not the same feeling as listening live
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:21pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. I work mornings, and with the commute and stuff, I just can't get back in time consistently. But yeah, the archives will always be updated!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:22pm
Austin Rich:

You can tell that the person who plays Suzy is also playing that clerk at the store.
  6:22pm
Charles:

Dave Hadaway from Box 12 would have taken care of the casserole mix-up by now though.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
Austin Rich:

Also: if you listen very carefully, you can hear a "faint" recording behind this recording. Whoever "archived" this show, probably recorded it over another show, already on the tape. This is common with a lot of Old Time Radio shows, depending on who archived the shows, and what kind of medium they were using.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Austin Rich:

Dave Hadaway writes for Reader's Digest, I think.
Avatar 6:25pm
Mr Fab:

that's funny Charles. Now we need "Box 12," an alternate-universe "Box 13."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
Austin Rich:

Maybe Charles and I can write a "Box 12" script for April Fool's Day sometime.
  6:30pm
Charles:

My english is not good enough for that but I appreciate the idea. Thanks for the offer Mister Dimestore!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm

I buy a Box of !2 regularly!

Austin Rich:

This and two others "complete" the Voyage of the Scarlet Queen! After that, there are two "pilot" episodes that I'll run, so you can hear the shows that might have been. Then we'll move on to another show with celebrities and sailing.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Austin Rich:

That's our gimmick, Scott67! Each Box 12 episode ends with Dave getting a Box of 12 to take home.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm
Austin Rich:

Neilson is just all over these later episodes.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm

Roddy McDowel!

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
Austin Rich:

Here's more information about our guest start this week on The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen:

en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
Austin Rich:

At the time he was doing this voice, he was 20 years old. But he was clearly trying to sound much younger.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Austin Rich:

At the time, Roddy worked for Monogram Pictures, where he played a kid in a version of "Kidnapped" that was based on a Robert Lous Stevenson novel. Most likely, some pitched the idea of doing a "pirate" story on The Scarlet Queen, for the sake of "synergy."
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
Austin Rich:

I usually comment on the sound. I did some EQ and other improvement tricks on this one, but it's not so bad, all things considered.
  6:43pm
Charles:

Sounds good.
Avatar 6:43pm
Mr Fab:

Amazing! Years (decades?) before Roddy McDowel came to prominence in the movies. Of course, the "Planet of The Apes" movies first thing that comes to my mind..
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
Austin Rich:

Apparently, he started working in film in 1938, when he was just 10. And he did a ton of theater.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
Austin Rich:

But yeah, Planet of the Apes was my introduction to him as a kid.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Austin Rich:

This radio appearance is the third of his four primary radio appearances. He was in an episodes of "Lux Radio Theater" in 1943 (a version of My Friend Flicka, which he appeared in the film version), and again in 1947, in an episode of "Suspense." (A story called, "One Way Street.")
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
Austin Rich:

Lastly, he appeared in an episode of "Family Theater," in the Christmas episode of 1952.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
Austin Rich:

I will always remember him as the voice of, "The Breadmaster," from the '90's "The Tick" cartoon.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:55pm
Austin Rich:

I guess he's only playing six years younger in this story. Still...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:57pm
Austin Rich:

Only two more proper episodes of The Scarlett Queen! Will we learn more crew members names? Will there be another strange accent? Another Planet of The Apes guest star?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:58pm
Austin Rich:

19! I guess my math was off.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:59pm
Austin Rich:

See, it was a movie tie in...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm
Scott67:

Aussie connection!
  7:03pm
Charles:

I'm looking forward for all that Scarlet Queen stuff.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:10pm
Austin Rich:

This photo of us is from the first interview we did, back in 2018, when we were first getting to know each other.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Austin Rich:

Here's a link to that interview:

Avatar 7:16pm
Mr Fab:

Mrs Fab is a big "Nordic Noir" fan. Lots of crime fiction coming out of, like, Iceland.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, that seems to be where the good crime fiction is coming from these days.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Austin Rich:

Just before I left PDX, I saw that the community college was offering a Crime Fiction class focusing on Scandinavian authors, and I wish I could have stayed and taken it.

I should just join a reading group and plow though those books.
  7:21pm
Charles:

Austin, changing the time slot is a fine plan B but have you considered using Chandu's magic to solve your schedule problem?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Austin Rich:

If only I could use the magic of Chandu!

My new job is 8 to Noon, Mon - Friday. (Or, until everything is done.) While I could probably make it to the show each week (like I did this week), there will just be days that, logistically, I won't be able to get back and get prepared to do the show in time. But if I move it back, I won't miss the show, even if I have to run late.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Austin Rich:

It's mostly an insurance policy, so I don't leave Sheena in the lurch.
  7:27pm
Charles:

This way you have less chance to attract unwanted attention and get your show hijacked by Roxor and the likes. I understand.
Avatar 7:33pm
Mr Fab:

did we already hear an adaption of "Mars Is Heaven"?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Austin Rich:

We did. This was one of the "re-run" test episodes that were sent out. Since I'm running them "in order," and this is one of the "official" episodes, I decided to air it again in its proper place.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Austin Rich:

I've read that, depending on the station, lots of different episodes were re-run, during the off weeks. But there were a handful of episodes where the producers intentionally sent out a re-run, like in this case.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Austin Rich:

Next week, there will be a new episode.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Austin Rich:

(New to us, anyway.)
Avatar 7:37pm
Mr Fab:

will be interesting to hear again, now that I know the twist ending.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Austin Rich:

The show "X-Minus One," which follows Dimension X with the same producers, re-produces the best scripts from Dimension X... again. But there are differences in the way those X-Minus One productions are done... new FX, and some different actors.
Avatar 7:43pm
Mr Fab:

he knows when a specific variety of geraniums were developed?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Austin Rich:

I've wondered about the actors that do these shows. Certainly, they were used to getting all sorts of radio scripts and performing them, regardless of genre. And there is a troop of actors who all seem to recur in all the Dimension X episodes, so they got very familiar with the genre. But I can only imagine what these actors thought of acting out all these wild stories.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Austin Rich:

I was thinking about that on this listen, Mr. Fab!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Austin Rich:

I forgot this episode was set in 1987! Shouldn't they be listening to Witney Huston and Starship?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Austin Rich:

I think this is an example of that "comedy vs. horror" thing I was trying to get at. There's a lot of comedy in the Martian Chronicles, and this show doesn't shy away from jokes. But out of all the stories in the book - many with much less creepy premises - the folks who were producing this show honed in on this story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm
Scott67:

Good to know it's a re-run! I thought I was on Mars myself for a minute!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Austin Rich:

I mean, I might fall for Corn Fritters, too.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Austin Rich:

You don't even need to show me my family; just show me a setting of Southern Food and I'll probably fall for any alien trap.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Austin Rich:

It's like this show wanted to deal with PTSD... but at the last minute, decided it didn't exactly know how to do that kind of story justice.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
Austin Rich:

The captain wanted to get back to listen to the top count down hits of 1987 before bed, like a dedicated radio listener.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Krys O.:

Thanks, Austin!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Austin Rich:

Thanks Krys O! See ya'll next week!
  7:57pm

Thanks Austin! Later friends!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
