I'm late with September's 20 Minutes. But it IS mostly edited. Just needs some light touch-ups.

I bet it will be awesome.

It's getting closer and closer to "awesome," anyway.

For those who are curious: this will be the last "story" episode of "The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen." There's not exactly a resolution or anything, but it is the last installment... with a few surprises.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
Austin Rich:

(There are two more "Scarlet Queen" episodes, both pilots. One from before everything we've heard, and one from almost a decade after, when they tried to reboot the show. I'll air both of those in November.

I like that baking tip, Krys O. That sounds like a feature we should develop for December, Krys?

"He was about 50"? He sounds 80!

In 1949, 50 was the 80 of it's day?

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm

This hasn't been announced (or even recorded yet) but on Wednesday we're recording the first in a series of commentary tracks, with Michael and Steve, and anyone else who would like to get in on this. Should be fun to hear the insight from the writers.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
Austin Rich:

I try to write new ACME ads each week. They're always ridiculous, but... old ads from the 40's were also ridiculous, so it actually works.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Austin Rich:

Oooof. These casual "racial slurs" are certainly an artifact of the era.
Avatar 9:25pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

they certainly date the story. but they're not as bad as the ones in Jungle Adventure on the Black Castle.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Austin Rich:

I like the notion that these ads in the paper were so well seen, and even promptly enough to have same-day instructions given and followed. It's such an artifact of a pre-internet era.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:27pm

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Austin Rich:

While the ins and outs of radio shows in those days are hard to know this many years later, all of the scripts for this show were written by the same team of two, and they were pretty relentless with the production of the show. It's equally possible the show was canceled, as it was the team needed to throw in the towel. I'll let the listeners decide how to interpret this final story.
Avatar 9:34pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Lol! another ACME classic!
Avatar 9:35pm

a team of two. A writer and a beta. even back then.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

For those who need reminding: Phil and Red sailed for Kang for most of the series, but that storyline was resolved many weeks ago. This story sort of "brings back" all the old characters, for one last hurrah...

ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Hi!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Austin Rich:

There's not a lot known about Gil Doud and Robert Tallman, who wrote The Scarlet Queen Scripts. But it's likely one or both were in the Pacific Theater of WWII, as they really describe the ports as if from first-hand experience.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Austin Rich:

Good Hello, Will!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Krys O.:

Yesterday, Annie, yes, the 1982 John Huston film was on TCM. I had it on in the background as I did chores, but I did pay attention to a scene that recreated a radio show complete with foley artists. And a week ago, Radio Days was on and I know that one like the back of my hand.
Avatar 9:38pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

it also explains the bad stereotypical Japanese accent.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
Austin Rich:

I need to see Radio Days again.

Haven't seen Annie in YEARS, but I used to know that one way too well.

TCM. You have convinced me, I'm subscribing to the app this week.
Avatar 9:40pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

not the girl, but the yelling man earlier.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, the Scarlet Queen has a lot of bad accents, and many... not very flattering. She does a pretty convincing job, but all of these accents are by Americans, which is... problematic.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
Austin Rich:

Of course, Red is good at escaping via windows. He's a Seasoned Sailor.
Avatar 9:45pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

He would've been a fine crewmate aboard Plutonia.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Austin Rich:

I'm not familiar with that one. Google says its a DOOM reference?
Avatar 9:47pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Google is right and wrong. It's an Imaginos reference referring to a tall ship in the original album and later to a country.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Austin Rich:

Ahhh. I usually need footnotes and a gloss.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm

I dreamt I was a very small being swallowed by a chicken, and had to get inside an egg so I could escape when it was laid.
I don’t usually remember my dreams but made a point to remember that one.
Avatar 10:04pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Mr Fab, that reminds me of the story of Taliesin (Gwion Bach)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:06pm
Austin Rich:

That does sound like a very memorable dream, Mr. Fab. I would remember that one, for sure.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:09pm

I should do a show where I have an open Zoom Call that anyone can get on, and they just tell their dreams.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Austin Rich:

"Fix-Up Novels" was something we talked about in the previous installment. It's a "Novel" that's shaped from a bunch of short stories that were previously published, then "massaged" to become a sort-of novel.
Avatar 10:11pm

Obadiah has a huge collection of original sci-fi books and magazines from the 30s and 40s. We nerd out about books a lot.
Avatar 10:21pm

The most interesting thing L Ron wrote was the memo that went: “the three goals of Scientology are 1) make money, 2) make money…”
And you can probably guess what the third goal is.

Avatar 10:27pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

What is it with reporters and superheroes?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Austin Rich:

I imagine most reporters think they can make a career by breaking the story of a new super-hero.

Which probably explains why Superman thought it was a good idea to pretend to be a reporter: he could see who was trying to cover Superman, and cut that off at the pass.
Avatar 10:30pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

And Spider-Man has an apparent exclusive with a newspaper that hates him.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

That organ music can't be a good sign.
Avatar 10:33pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Organ music usually means either a dangerous thing, or Barbarella's clothes are going to be flying around the room
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Austin Rich:

So, for those who have been following Chandu: for the last 30 some-odd episodes, they have been looking for the missing father / husband / friend. They were optimistic that he might be alive, but were told he was dead.

In 30-some odd episodes of adventure, they have learned that it is more likely that he is alive... but they still don't know for sure.

Chandu moves very slowly.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:35pm

I do like it when Barbarella's clothes fly around the room. But it's hard not to love that.

This scene with these guys and this "character" really has an "Alien" vibe to it.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Austin Rich:

They said in the opening: a nuclear disaster has destroyed everything, but I think it was even destroyed before that. It sounded bad.
Avatar 10:47pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

So depending upon how long ago that was something sinister might have risen from the ashes?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Austin Rich:

I like how all old Dimension X shows end up sounding like a submarine story, with the SFX, anyway.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Austin Rich:

A lot of old Sci-Fi "space" stories sort of treated space like the sea, and spaceships were often described like Subs. And since a lot of the people that worked in radio in these days were WWII vets, I suspect enough of them were leaving their influence on sci-fi in that way.
Avatar 10:49pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

It certainly influenced StarBlazers
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

Austin Rich:

I like how "Bibles" are illegal. Contraband!
  10:51pm
Heather:

SoT trivia: the sound I put when the Spacebridge is running is a submarine sound effect, just really low, for texture. I'm sure I cribbed that from OTR, not even meaning to.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Austin Rich:

Ha! I mean, I'm sure that's an old trick in audio production. I wonder if they design real NASA crafts to "sound" like subs, even though there's no practical reason for it to sound that way. (Sort of like how modern electric cars "sound" like regular engines, but don't need to.)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
