Oh man I hope I can listen live to this:
Subways and surveillance - with Christopher Robbins from Hell Gate
Monday, September 26th, 6pm - 7pm
on Techtonic with Mark Hurst
In New York City, MetroCards are being phased out in favor of a smartphone-scanning system called OMNY, which tracks the identity, location, and travel habits of every passenger of New York's subways and buses. Christopher Robbins from Hell Gate discusses his "privacy guide to OMNY" - and why we should be skeptical about subway surveillance.

As someone who lives on Staten Island where there are virtually no metro card machines at all OMNY is an upgrade for me as I now no longer have to worry about buying a MetroCard first if I need to jump on the bus into Manhattan (with only one subway line out here most public transit users are reliant on buses).

Yeah, D Rok, I'm not looking forward to the dance of trying to use the CC that provides me with pretax travel-restricted funds, having it rejected at the vendors, and having to buy the preloaded cards with cash and then submit claims for reimbursement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am
Lizardner Dave !:

While I appreciate people wanting to maintain anonymity it's fairly impossible in an urban setting. There are cameras on the streets, cameras on the buses, and cameras in every building. If someone wants to figure out where I'm going in NYC, they're going to, and at least OMNY makes it easier for me to get there. As far as the "privacy tax" is concerned, if you're not a full time commuter and you've never had a Metrocard expire with a few bucks left on it, good for you.

Brian, we canoed thirty miles yesterday completely around Manhattan, and we hit some hard rain basically as we approached Jersey City on the Hudson, but I could see landmarks starting to clear (Colgate clock, Statue of Liberty, Verrazano), and I knew the weather would pass by. Then we hit the East River and got the golden light of September sun magic hour as the current and wind took us home. It was a pretty great September weather combo. As you say, the two complement each other.
