The Chemical Brothers  The Salmon Dance   Favoriting We Are The Night  Virgin  2007  We Are the Night is the sixth studio album by English electronic music duo The Chemical Brothers. Of "The Salmon Dance" a notable online record reviewing service says "While there's been a well-earned avalanche of derision aimed at Fatlip's dopey nature-doc rap "The Salmon Dance", he had to work with the beat the Chemicals gave him; most MCs, faced with the prospect of rhyming over something Arthur Baker might have concocted after an afternoon of gorging on vanilla-frosted hash brownies and Spongebob reruns, would probably rap about dancing like a fish on crack, too." We love the salmon dance. And we love Salmon. Did you know? There’s a common story that cats love fish because Ancient Egyptians used to lure cats into their homes using fish but in reality, the love of fish is simply because cats are opportunistic feeders. Plus, fish are a great source of protein and oils that keep my coat super shiny.    0:03:44 (Pop-up)
Felix Da Housecat  Hunting Season   Favoriting Kevin Dazzle and the Neon Fever  Emperor Norton  2003  Felix Da Housecat is an American DJ and record producer, mostly known for house music and electro and considered the second wave of Chicago House. This album is a concept album based on the story of the character Devin Dazzle and his involvement with a group of women called the Neon Fever and features a number of guest artists including James Murphy, and is a highlight of releases that came out in the height of Electroclash. Also, I enjoy hunting very much. Especially bugs...including silverfish and millipedes.    0:07:24 (Pop-up)
Mouse and the Traps  I Satisfy   Favoriting I Satisfy 7"  Fraternity Records  1968  Garage Psychedelic Rock band from Tyler, Texas, USA, formed 1965 and disbanded 1969. The band reformed briefly in 1972 but had a genuine reunion in 1986 with the original members during the Texas Sesquicentennial celebration, with a performance at Flag Pole Hill in Dallas before an estimated 7000 people. They also had a regional hit with "A Public Execution" in Ottawa, with many local bands covering the song. They are described as "a fine band who was probably too chameleon-like to find their niche in the national market". Fun fact about mice and cats...Cats have been seafaring companions for thousands of years due to their ability to hunt mice and rats and control vermin. Sadly, I have never had the chance to catch a mouse. Someday....    0:11:38 (Pop-up)
Sonic Youth  Purr   Favoriting Dirty  DGC  1992  Dirty is the seventh full-length studio album and second double album by American rock band Sonic Youth. When Dirty first came out, it was an almost universal disappointment to anyone who'd listened to Sonic Youth beyond Goo-- and amidst the cries bemoaning what a major-label contract had done to their music, it wasn't as clear then that, beneath the glossy sheen Butch Vig and Andy Wallace had inflicted upon their beloved chaos, there was a damn good record waiting to be heard. "Purr" is a pop song dressed up with a thousand pounds of overdrive...felines don’t have a unique body part or vocal organ that allows them to purr. Instead, the sound comes from rapid movements in their voice box. A purr starts as a signal from the central nervous system that travels to muscles in the voice box..these muscles tighten and release very quickly while the cat inhales and exhales to make the vibrations that we can feel and hear. Cats purr for all kinds of reasons, I purr when I'm happy because I am a very happy cat.    0:15:03 (Pop-up)

Von Südenfed  Duckrog   Favoriting Tromatic Reflexxions  Domino  2007  Mouse on Mars & Mark E. Smith teamed up for this excellent, excellent album. From the desk of Meep Moop: "Are there really mice on Mars? What is a Duckrog? No matter... It is Duck, so good enough."    0:28:22 (Pop-up)
Damaged Bug  Pet Programs and Games   Favoriting Psych for Sore Eyes 2 (V/A)  Sonic Cathedral  2014  John Dwyer strikes again! This one a rarity. From the desk of Meep Moop: "Yes, more games, please. Program them immediately."    0:30:56 (Pop-up)
OOIOO  Jackson's Club "Sunspot"   Favoriting Feather Float  Birdman  2001  From the desk of Meep Moop: "I love feathers floating, I will jump for them. I love Birdman records... Bring them near my teeth and claws... I love the artwork on this album... Colourful birds & Feathers... I love that Yoshimi lists amongst her instruments used on the album "birds". I also love Sunspots. I lie in them all the time. Everyone should lie in sunspots, I don't know who Jackson is, and frankly I don't care. I'm a cat. This record is the bomb."    0:33:44 (Pop-up)
Pere Ubu  Birdies   Favoriting The Art Of Walking  Rough Trade / Geffen  1980  "The Art of Walking is the fourth full-length album by Pere Ubu. Mayo Thompson of The Red Krayola joined as guitarist for this album and slanted the proceedings further towards deconstruction and abstraction, and away from the primal rock that former guitarist Tom Herman had facilitated. The group would record one more album with Thompson, Song of the Bailing Man, before disbanding. [Later to reform.]"    0:36:01 (Pop-up)
Pony Da Look  Night Cat   Favoriting The Forcefield Weakens  Bosch Records  2003  From the desk of Meep Moop: "I am definitely a night cat. Really, all times. I'll sleep through them all & be awake through them all. But night shadows compel me. I understand that Pony Da Look were a quartet of fantastic female humans from Toronto. My humans told them they were fantastic to see live. Whatever that means."    0:38:31 (Pop-up)
Silicone Prairie  Lay in the Flowers   Favoriting My Life on the Silicone Prairie  Computer Human Records  2022  From the desk of Meep Moop: "Why won't they let me lay in the flowers? They get mad if I knock over the flowers. They won't let me out to the garden. I just want to lay in the flowers..."Direct from Kansas City and encased in a layer of four-track analog glory comes the debut album from Silicone Prairie. You may have enjoyed Ian Teeple in action with Warm Bodies or The Natural Man Band, though Silicone Prairie is where Teeple has been focusing his solo creative energies over the past couple years, culminating in these 13 tracks. A trebly & jittery, landlocked Midwestern punk sound comes into effect straight out of the gate, much in the lineage of Gulcher's 'Red Snerts' comp or the Dow Jones side of 'Hoosier Hysteria' - with a dash of hardcore DEVO or even D.L.I.M.C. thrown in for contemporary spuds. But there's far more to Silicone Prairie - with quantitatively great songwriting and instrumentation bursting any preconceived sub-subgenre bubbles and occupying a kindred creative plain that made just about any Mould, Kirkwood, or Sage composition of the mid-80's oh so delightful & memorable. Heck, there's even a synth-heavy instrumental dedicated to electronic pioneer Patrick Cowley. 'My Life on the Silicone Prairie' dances across the sonic spectrum, from bedroom jangle to basement devolution, carrying big guitars, sharp synthesizers, and a hopeful grin into 2021 and beyond. A carefully crafted debut alive with the kind of creative rock'n'roll energy that simply cannot be quarantined, now or ever. 'My Life on the Silicone Prairie' comes shrinkwrapped in a reverse board sleeve with risograph insert printed at Oddities Prints and download code. Australian pressing available from Computer Human Records." Silicone Prairie (Bandcamp)    0:41:16 (Pop-up)

Provisionally Entitled The Singing Fish (Deluxe)

Sentient Sonics

1981 / 2016

From the desk of Meep Moop: "Count sheep if you want, counting fish are better... And tastier." From the desk of Derek: You likely know that Colin Newman is also the lead singer of Wire. (And many other things... Malka Spigel, Immersion, Swim Records, etc. etc.) One of the second things he did after Wire took their first break was an instrumental album of tracks names by fish & number. Fair enough then. The cat likes it...

PK5  I'm A Big Black Messy Cat   Favoriting Palimpsest  Derivative  1997  Pest 5000 were a Candian indie rock band consisting of Patti Schmidt (vocals, bass), Kevin Kamoda (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Jon Ascensio (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Andy Vial (drums), Geneviève Heistek (violin, vocals) Initially known as Pest they later added the 5000 to their name and eventually shortened it down to P5K Patti Schmidt later went on to work for CBC radio on the show Brave New Waves [as did Kevin Kamoda] and formed Nanobot Auxiliary Ballet with Jeff Wayne Jon Ascensio had a side project called Starbean. This song quotes "Pink Pussycat" by DEVO to great effect! (As well as Steve Albini's Big Black) Derivative is co-founded by Geneviève Heistek. -- Fun fact: I am a Siamese cat. My ancestors are derived from the Wichianmat landrace, one of several varieties of cat native to Thailand (formerly known as Siam), the original Siamese became one of the most popular breeds in Europe and North America in the 19th century.    0:54:20 (Pop-up)
The B-52's  Big Bird   Favoriting Whammy!  Warner Records  1983  In December 1982, the band began recording their third album, Whammy!. According to Pierson, Strickland no longer wanted to play the drums, so the band switched to drum machines for this album, with Strickland and Ricky Wilson playing all the music on the album, and the rest of the band providing vocals only. Having originally played guitars, organ, bass guitar and synthesizers, Pierson switched to a mainly vocal role in the studio, but remained behind the keyboards on tour. The band also began experimenting heavily with synthesizers during this period. While many fans do not consider this album to be as strong as the previous releases...they are WRONG! B-52's + Synths = AWESOME! Side note: I love sitting at the window and looking at birds. If Babs and Derek would just let me out...I would eat them all.    0:56:57 (Pop-up)
Cherry Cheeks  Go Outside   Favoriting Cherry Cheeks  Total Punk  2021  Formed in Orlando, but based in Portland, Cherry Cheeks is the one-man project of Kyle Harms that came out of pandemic boredom. Whether its egg punk or Devo-core, Cherry Cheeks is the embracement of melding trebly oddball and new wave nerves with hardcore punk. Cherry Cheek's main influence is DEVO and he says " I've been called Devo-worship and I think it's funny, because it's less about worshiping Devo and more about worshiping their methodology. I like the way that they are subversive..."    1:01:11 (Pop-up)
Post-America  I Need To Go Outside   Favoriting Miss Information  Post-America  2021  There is not much information online about Post-America save a Bandcamp description "woman on computer make video audio and more". There are two full length releases there. I like this song and wish Babs and Derek would let me out. I will just keep howling at the door and trying to half heartedly escape until they figure this out. I don't know where I'd go, and I'm mostly scared of what's out there....but I'd like to try. They keep telling me it's dangerous but I don't believe them.    1:03:33 (Pop-up)

Slits  Animal Space / Spacier   Favoriting Return of the Giant Slits  Sony  1981  From the desk of Meep Moop: "I am an animal. I do not jump away. Unless it's because there's hangers dropping to the floor. That shit is terrifying." From the desk of Derek: "One of my favourite Slits songs. I will never, ever tire of this. The lyrics. The vocal performance. The excellent loose but otherworldly double-tracked guitar solo. Everything about this is the definition of perfection in my world.    1:16:29 (Pop-up)
Public Image Ltd.  No Birds Do Sing   Favoriting Death Disco (B-side) / Plastic Box  Virgin  1979 / 1999 / 2009  From the desk of Meep Moop: "If it was up to me, there would be almost no birds. I'd still like one or two to still be around, though. I'd miss hunting them through the window." From the desk of Derek: For a while there, John Lydon found a way to up his game considerably. I listen to P.I.L. vastly more than Sex Pistols. Early, P.I.L. mostly, really.    1:23:25 (Pop-up)
Old Time Relijun  Left Hand Shake (Panther Attack Remix)   Favoriting The Musicking Remix Project!  (BandCamp)  2022  Released last week on Oct 7. From the desk of Meep Moop: "I would attack, happily, given a target. I also will shake left hands. Watch out for claws, though." From the desk of Derek: Olympia's 'Old Time Relijun' (and Arrington De Dionyso in general) are fantastic and should be at the very top of the record-collection-food-chain. Find this track amongst 24 other 'pay what you want' remixes of their latest album on their Bandcamp. This all happened after their callout worldwide for remixes, stems provided to the remixer at request. This was just one of many results. The Musicking Remix Project (Bandcamp)  *   1:28:14 (Pop-up)
Cat Power  Human Being   Favoriting Sun  Matador  2012  Apparently, cats think we are also cats. I often tell Meep Moop that I'm not a cat. That I don't speak "cat", so I don't understand him. If he's complaining about something, I explain that he's a cat, and that's the problem with his situation. For example, if he wants to go out, I give him specific instructions on how to open the door. He won't do it. He's a cat. I'm a human. I easily do it. I open doors and go where I want all the time. Therefore, he should not think I am a cat. Unless he thinks I'm a cat with superpowers. Chan Marshall is Cat Power. I found the lyrics to this quite inspiring. Some of her songs cut to my core. I don't know what it is about them, exactly.    1:31:43 (Pop-up)

One O'Clock Jump   Favoriting

Midnight Special

From the desk of Meep Moop: I am a fan of Midnight. It is special. At One O'Clock I do like to jump. Up onto any sleeping humans. Curling amongst legs into a cuddle clump. Yeah, that's the deal. Jimmy Smith was a cool cat. That organ he was playing, like all organs, was hot.

Johnny Cash  Mean Eyed Cat   Favoriting American Unchained II  American Recordings LLC  1996  His second recording in the series with Rick Rubin, this album mostly centered on covers but is a cover of a cover from his 1960 album "Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams"    1:41:59 (Pop-up)
The Mr. T Experience  No Milk Today   Favoriting Night Shift at the Thrill Factory  Sixth International  1988  This is a cover of the Herman's Hermits song. The Mr. T Experience serves mainly as the creative outlet for singer/guitarist Frank Portman, the primary songwriter and sole continuous member throughout multiple lineup changes. The band is closely associated with the Berkeley and greater San Francisco Bay Area punk rock movement of the late 1980s and the 1990s. Babs and Derek don't let me drink milk because it's actually bad for my tummy. Back to why my eyes are crosseyed, because that's more interesting than my intestinal disorders. Did you know? The crossed eyes of the Siamese cat developed naturally to compensate for a genetic flaw in their eye structure. Interestingly, this same genetic trait causes the coloration of Siamese. Although the cat's eyes are not permanently crossed, traditional Siamese cats must cross them to see straight. Mine are super crossed, and that makes me super special.    1:44:31 (Pop-up)
Electronicat  Guitarkatze   Favoriting 21st Century Toy  Disko B  2003  Electronicat is the alter ego of French musician and performer Fred Bigot, whose work is characterized by its constant switch between experimental noise and pop music. Combining samples of his own voice with guitars, analogue synthesizers and drum machine loops he created a pounding, fuzzy, wah-wah distorted psychedelic electro sound. I like it very much. This song is about a Guitarcat...and I like playing with guitar strings!    1:47:15 (Pop-up)
Whitey  Black Cat   Favoriting Great Shakes Vol. 2  NO! Label  2012  Whitey is a British artist, somewhat mysterious but most prolific. Great Shakes was recently reissued on vinyl, along with his entire collection in a much anticipated burst of release. He is wry, witty, angry, bitter and melancholic...and a great piano player. One of our favourites here on Echo Beach. While this song is about black cats, I am not a black cat. I am a blue point Siamese. My coat is a cool silver ombre, with darker grey points which is a form of partial albinism, resulting from a mutation in tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production. The mutated tyrosinase enzyme is heat-sensitive; it fails to work at normal body temperatures, but becomes active in cooler areas of the skin. This results in dark colouration in the coolest parts of the siamese cat's body, including the extremities and the face.    1:51:18 (Pop-up)
Jean-Pierre Ferland  Le Chat Du Café Des Artistes   Favoriting Jaune  Barclay  1970  Jaune is an album by Jean-Pierre Ferland, released in 1970. Considered an enduring classic of Canadian and Quebec music, the album was named the 71st greatest Canadian album of all time in Bob Mersereau's 2007 book The Top 100 Canadian Albums. Ferland began work with Radio-Canada in 1956 as an accountant, but his career there was short lived when he decided to pursue music full time. This song is particularly heavy and was later covered by Charlotte Gainsbourg "When death is here, it’s here to stay When laughter is over, life is over too When I cut the strings for good Ditch me in the garbage bin Hang me like a pheasant for a month Then throw my ripen flesh to the cat He may refuse to eat my head and my liver But choose the right time to offer him my heart So I may stay with you a little while On your shoulders and on your knees And I may be, as we all have to exist, The cat of the artists’ café If bread grows scarce I will be there, do not hesitate Break my legs and my neck And eat me straight from the cat It won’t be the first time An artist is devoured There are documented cases of cats eating their dead owners. Once the owners have died, they’re another carcass, so domestic cats will eat you to avoid starvation. How long the cat waits will depend on its age, size, metabolism, and health. Cats eat the body while it’s in the earlier stages of decomposition as it’s easier to chew. But I wouldn't do that because I love Babs and Derek too much to even consider it....    1:55:30 (Pop-up)
