Artist Track Album Label Year Comments New / Special Approx. start time
The Cherry Boys  Falling (Loop)   Favoriting Shoot The Big Shot (7")  Crash Records  1983  Frankly, sometimes the best thing about a bargain bin find isn't the song, but rather the imperfection that keeps you from having to listen to the whole thing. According to Discogs: "The Cherry Boys were a brilliant sixties-oriented band from Liverpool. The band consisted of John Byrne (aka John Cherry) on vocals & guitar, Keith Gunson on vocals & bass, James Hughes on vocals & keyboards, and Howie Minns on drums. Icicle Works drummer Chris Sharrock was part of the band early on and appeared on their first single “Man to Man.” Hughes and Minns went on to form Exhibit B after The Cherry Boys split up in 1984.""    0:00:00 (Pop-up)
Saal 3  Ich Mach Mir Keine Sorgen Mehr   Favoriting U-Bahn 7"  Zick Zack  1981  I feel like this is the German version of A Certain Ratio. Saal 2 was founded in early 1980 by Jens Kraft (vocals, guitar, bass), Thomas Meins (percussion) and Godeke Ilse (vocals, synth). Reinforced by various changing fellow musicians, the group began their career as an electronic new wave formation in the style of The Residents , Der Plan and DAF . To really confuse fans, they also released as Saal 2, 4, 5 and 6. They never released a full length due to bankruptcy, and therefore this single is actually...quite rare.    0:03:32 (Pop-up)
Mo-Dettes  Masochistic Opposite   Favoriting White Mice 7"  Mode  1979  The B-Side to White Mice, this tune is just as great! Mo-Dettes were formed in 79, and this was their first single. The band signed to Decca Records subsidiary Deram and released one album, The Story So Far, November 1980. The album chiefly consisted of pop-punk originals, as well as covers of The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" and Édith Piaf's "Milord". Also in 1981, billed as Bomberettes, they provided backing vocals on the track "Fighter Pilot" on John Cale's album Honi Soit. They released only one more full length in 81 before disbanding....    0:07:19 (Pop-up)
Diagram Brothers  We Are All Animals   Favoriting We Are All Animals 7"  Construct Records  1980  The Diagram Brothers were a post-punk band from Manchester, England active between 1979 and 1982. The band comprised Andy Diagram (bass guitar), Fraser Diagram (vocals, guitar), Lawrence Diagram (guitar), Jason Diagram (bass), and Simon Diagram (drums) (not actually brothers). Andy Diagram was also a member of Dislocation Dance from 1978 to 1982, and in 1985, and was a member of The Pale Fountains and James.    0:10:46 (Pop-up)
Medium Medium  Nadsat Dream   Favoriting Hungy So Angry 7"  Catchalot Records  1981  Emerging in 1978 out of the Nottingham punk/rhythm & blues band The Press,Medium Medium's first single was "Them or Me", which was released in late 1978 and was still selling well enough in 1980 to appear in the UK Independent Chart. The second single, "Hungry, So Angry", was released in February 1981 on Cherry Red Records. One of the first records to introduce slap bass - a technique borrowed from black funk music - to a generally white audience, "Hungry, So Angry" reached #48 in the Billboard Disco chart.    0:13:30 (Pop-up)
Diagram Brothers  There Is No Shower   Favoriting We Are All Animals 7"  Construct Records  1980  This little slab of wax just keeps giving! The B Side recounts the frustration many of us have felt in dealing with bureaucracy, city councils, and "the man" in general. I feel bad for David, his lack of legs and his mum.    0:17:02 (Pop-up)

He would later be a founding member of Lords Of The New Church w/ Dead Boys' Stiv Bators. True story, Stewart Copeland drums on this. A fairly recent dollar bin find. I think it's worth at least twice that.    0:31:34 (Pop-up)

I missed the surprise 7" (fr)release of The Fall's "Rude All The Time", which disappointed me greatly, but my subsequent membership rewarded me with the brilliant Ben E. Wallers (Country Teasers) project The Rebel, with this 7" and track. Is Bums On A Rock meant to be akin to "Bombs On Iraq"? The timeline agrees, but the speculation is solely mine.    0:50:35 (Pop-up)

To my knowledge there is no other mix of this song. It is one of a series of 7" singles released by the dance magazine Jockey Slut. A CD compilation of the 7"s was planned but never officially released. Add N To (X) have not received half the attention that they should, in my opinion.

Gun Morgan  Hot Jungle   Favoriting Hot Jungle/Soul Africa 7"  Charles Talar Records  1974  Gun Morgan was an Ivory Coast musician who was very active and saw success in France. Not much online about his music output but his obituary from 2018 states "First Medical Delegate of Côte d'Ivoire, Graduate of the Pharmaceutical Institute of France, Musician" He also released albums on the Eboni label, which was a collab between Motown to promote musicians from the Ivory Coast. This somewhat rare and overlooked record is a serious slab of afro funk!    1:08:22 (Pop-up)
The Gangsters  We Are The Gangsters   Favoriting Wolly Bully 7"  Big Bear Records  1980  Seven-piece ska band from Birmingham, UK. They released one single in 1980 on Big Bear label and had only 3 releases in total. Which is too bad, because they were pretty great. Big Bear Records was founded by promoter and band manager Jim Simpson in 1968, taking its name from the nickname given to Simpson by Radio 1 DJ John Peel.    1:11:42 (Pop-up)
Miriam Makeba  Pata Pata   Favoriting Pata Pata/Ballad of the Sad Young Men 7"  Reprise  1967  Grammy Award-winning South African singer, also known as Mama Afrika. She sang with The Skylarks (3) and The manhattan brothers, before landing a role in the musical King Kong in 1959. She left for London where she met Harry Belafonte, who invited her to America. Makeba is widely regarded as the first lady of South Africa traditional music. At one time married to Hugh Masekela, she became an international superstar in the USA and the UK, before being able to return to South Africa, once the political situation had improved. She performed this song on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1967.    1:14:52 (Pop-up)
Sam The Sham  Money's The Problem   Favoriting Banned In Boston/Money's The Problem 7"  MGM Records  1967  Domingo "Sam" Samudio, better known by his stage name Sam the Sham, is a retired American rock and roll singer. Sam the Sham was known for his camp robe and turban and hauling his equipment in a 1952 Packard hearse with maroon velvet curtains. As the front man for the Pharaohs, he sang on several Top 40 hits in the mid-1960s, including the Billboard Hot 100 runners-up "Wooly Bully" and "Li'l Red Riding Hood". He left the music business in 1980 and worked in Mexico as an interpreter and as a mate on small commercial boats in the Gulf of Mexico. Sam later became a motivational speaker and still makes occasional concert appearances. He was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2016.    1:17:52 (Pop-up)

In 1990 he moved to the Netherlands after an invitation to join Dutch band The Ex. The openness and versatility of the musicians in this group has brought them into contact with many musicians from different scenes and backgrounds, including Tom Cora(cello), Han Bennink(drums), and Ab Baars (sax). In 1995 he began another group Kletka Red with Tony Buck Joe Williamson and Leonid Soybelman, fusing traditional Klezmer, Greek and Russian songs with their own frantic styles of playing. / In more recent years Andy has collaborated with musicians from many and varied backgrounds and disciplines differing from his own background which was rooted in the post punk Britain of the 80s. Many of these collaborations are duos with amongst others Yannis Kyriakides (Cypriot composer) with whom he performs a set of rebetika songs (urban Greek tunes from the 20s and 30s), Anne James Chaton (french sound poet), Colin Mclean (ex bass player from Dog Faced Hermans) who now works with electronic music and live sampling..." ...+ many many more projects... The Plastics  Top Secret Man   Favoriting Top Secret Man 7"  Invitiation  1980  Formed in 76, the Plastics were the archetypal Tokyo new wave band, combining a quirky, eccentric musical sensibility with sharp observational lyrics satirizing postmodern consumer culture in a way that still draws frequent comparisons with U.S. contemporaries such as Devo and the B-52's. Beginning life as a party band, the Plastics soon found their sensibility being influenced by glam rock's embrace of superficiality and ephemeral trash culture, as well as the social critique of the emerging punk rock and new wave generation, with the electronic music of German techno-pop pioneers Kraftwerk forming the final piece in the jigsaw puzzle that made up the group's sound.    2:03:25 (Pop-up)
Thomas Dolby  Europa and the Pirate Twins   Favoriting Europa and the Pirate Twins 7"  Capitol Records  1983  Taken from the album The Golden Age of Wireless, "Europa and the Pirate Twins" was written by Thomas Dolby, who produced it in collaboration with Tim Friese-Greene. The song opens with a "bluesy" harmonica solo, performed by Andy Partridge of the band XTC. Dolby has described the song, along with the tone of the album, as reflecting "a sense of [a] relationship that's going on as being overwhelmed by something on a grander level", adding that "there's a very strong wartime atmosphere to it...and a it is a semi-autobiographical romp". It's one of my favourite 80's records and one of the first I ever bought....    2:05:47 (Pop-up)
Kübler-Ross  Petrol (To Get Away From You)   Favoriting Victims of Victimless Crimes 7"  Ice Machine  2022  The five stages of grief model (or the Kübler-Ross model) is popularly known as a model that describes a series of emotions experienced by people who are grieving: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Kübler-Ross is a minimal synth/wave/industrial three-piece from Glasgow, Scotland, featuring Craig Clark, Katie Shannon, and veteran electronic producer and remixer producer Dave Clark, best-known for his Sparky moniker, and as one-half of the production/remix team Optimo (Espacio). First emerging in 2015 with a couple of compilation appearances, Kübler-Ross released their debut, self-titled album in 2020. Originally released as a limited-edition cassette on the Glasgow label Akashic Records, the album — now resequenced and released on vinyl via Suction Records’ minimal synth sublabel Ice Machine. This is an excellent cover of a song first made popular by Severed Heads.  * ***   2:09:04 (Pop-up)

1974

"Autobahn" is a 1975 song by German electronic band Kraftwerk, being the second and lead single from their studio album of the same name. The song was composed by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider of the band, with Emil Schult collaborating on the lyrics. It is co-produced by Conny Plank, and was the band's first track to use sung lyrics. Unlike Kraftwerk's later work, "Autobahn" was only released with German lyrics, without a simultaneous English-language release. The main refrain "Fahren Fahren Fahren" was often mistaken for the English phrase "Fun Fun Fun" and thought to be a reference to the 1964 Beach Boys' song "Fun, Fun, Fun"
