Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from October 14, 2022 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

I've neglected this version of Sweeney Todd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

the best version!!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
WR:

My introduction to Sweeney Todd was when a past co-worker would sing songs from Sweeney Todd under her breath when work was frustrating her until she had a manic grin. If I paused at her cubicle and asked her what she was singing she would chuckle and say, oh, nothing you would know about.

Is this a hair band musical? (Avantasia, I guess)

This was in 1994 or so. I eventually was informed that she was mostly mummering songs from Sweeney Todd, her favorite musical. I assume she wanted to protect her release valve from scrutiny by her co-workers until she was sure she could trust us. Speaking of Tim Burton, when his Ed Wood movie came out in '94, she organized a group of us to go watch it together.

I know nothing of Bollywood, but I enjoy these songs.

finding an original bollywood sndrk on vinyl in the wild is like manna from heaven (so rare). Usually I'd just pick up the compilations made for western audiences...

Will we hear "Where Is Love?" from Oliver?

Electric Django, he did go electric late in his career, interesting sound (like his acoustic better, but it is striking).

@doctorj, I don't hear the Ellington Orchestra here. Oops, there's something. Huh! This is completely new to me.

Where did you come across that Django/Ellington recording, Ms. B?? I have never heard of this at all.

Seems Duke was at peak popularity 1946, Django had lost a ton of money in Europe gambling, Duke brought him over. He didn't play most of an Ellington Band concert, but he'd come out at the end and do a few tunes with the band. At least that's my quick read.

Marat is good, but more interesting is Wilson's vocals (she has the most original phrasing and tonality)

@doctorj, now that you tell me, I have the delusion that I have heard of this Reinhart/Ellington combination before. But I never heard any of it, for sure.

I don't have those recordings, but I have heard them (I think most of the time what gets played is acoustic Reinhardt, because there's much more of it, and because probably some find the electric stuff jarring.
