My dad wasn't a careful collector; he was a thrift-store shopper and an active listener, and a bit of a slob. All his records are crackly and dirty, and all the covers are damaged and have cigarette burns and drink glass rings. The CDs are scratched but somehow play, and their cases are broken and paint-spattered, and the inserts are damaged, because the CD player and the CDs were kept on the paint bench in his boat shop.

@Handy I had a biology teacher in high school who had a big bowl of packing peanuts on his desk and would eat them like popcorn. Of course, he'd check them first with iodine to make sure they were the starchy kind, but you can kind of tell after a while based on the texture.

They are very bland, unsurprisingly.

Fun fact: those pens to detect fake money are just iodine looking for starch. Print your counterfeits on linen paper and they'll pass

I'm still over here working out the copyright term question Joe raised early on about the ASV/Living Era set. My understanding is that UK and the US treat the copyright terms of sound recordings differently (by a whopping 50+ years--the US gives 100 years for anything in that opening set, the UK 50 years from creation for pre-1963 works (it's now 70 years, but when ASV/Living was publishing it was 50)).
Avatar 10:45am
Joe McG:

I wish I had the "Street Fighting Man" 45 with the picture sleeve! I'd be rich! :)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:45am
Listener Scott:

That is how, I guess, those works were able to be republished in the UK on the presumption of having fallen into the public domain. E.g., 1939 + 50 = 1989, thus in 1992 ASV/Living can release in the UK.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:45am
Listener Scott:

However: (1) the original recordings in that first set likely enjoy *US* copyright protection; and (2) the UK and US are signatories to the Berne Convention (US entering in 1989), meaning that the UK was more or less compelled to recognize the longer US copyright terms for those US sound recording copyrights. Meaning that ASV/Living was always on weak legal footing. And that's perhaps why they no longer exist.

One thing about 'good music' ...it's the museum / gallery it hangs in, not just the painting. Context in other words. We want to believe our aesthetic has absolutes.
