Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from November 11, 2022 Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Bill Evans did a jazz version of Alice, but it never really caught on the way Someday My Prince Will Come did, which is now a standard in jazz groups.

Hello Dah-lings!!!

Marlene was at her best in this pic, and Hollaender wrote some great material for her. "See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have" being most famous and of course, the OG for Madelaine Kahn / Lily van Stupp in Blazing Saddles.

One of the things we played to death as kids was a 10" of Merman & Martin's historic Ford 50th anniversary TV show duet: archive.org...

I missed the show 2 Fridays ago, I see (and LG informed me) that you played a tune by Mezz Mezzrow. In the world of coincidences, I was seeing a jazz pianist (Alan Broadbent), at the Greenwhich Club named after him, Mezzrows (not sure why he'd have a club named after him; my impression of him was his main claim to fame wasn't his playing, but that he supplied weed to the jazz players of the time).

As a matter of fact, it IS great fun to be mean to you!
Avatar 🎭 7:28pm
Listener Gregory:

Remember when that Martin Short character on SNL would shout at the pianist, "Give me a C, a bouncy C!" and then sing a fraction of a song until he got bored with it? This sounds like one of those songs, with a bouncy C. (I Still Got It)
Avatar 7:28pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

That may have been intentional lol

@doctorjazz: I hope he got a club named after him BECAUSE he supplied weed to everybody

Dinah Washington would have been an awesome Broadway star if she had ever been hired for a good role. What a set of pipes.

1924, I think I remember that year. That damned flu pandemic was finally past us. Many people thought it was time to go go go go . And they did in many different directions and there were resulting clashes .

WR:

The Edison 78s were truly outstanding. Their way of cutting the groove was superior to the main alternative but it was like the betamax vs VHS thing. I have a friend who has the proper Edison player and I was amazed to hear the Edison disks on the Edison player. That was 20 or more years ago. Have not looked to see if there are any reissues focused on that.
