Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from November 4, 2022 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Listener comments!

Listener Gregory:

No matter how good a dancer you are, the name Flatley is not at all inspiring. In the old days, they would have made you change it to Isadora Duncan or Carey Grant or something.
Good evening, Bronwyn and fellow audience members.
Avatar 7:03pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I went to a performing arts high school and had math class with a dancer named Dancy and another named Kichline (pronounced "kickline"). Michael Flatley should have borrowed one of their names

Bronwyn, those people knew show biz!

Oog the 90s!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Webhamster Henry:

I'm to remember if there's a Hedwig and the Angry Inch song about RENT.
Avatar 🎭 7:21pm
Listener Gregory:

So far the 90s are not impressing me. Technically I lived through them, but I didn't follow musicals at all in those days.

[sneaking in] hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
doctorjazz:

Hi BB and show goers! (Actually going to a play in Summit, Joisey, Sense and Sensibility, but we're a half hour early, so listening in the car).

Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Henry, diciassette and doctorjazz!!! :D

Ester of Wood Rosin:

@Webhamster Henry I don't remember if it was in the stage show (only saw it twice, in the Broadway revival), but there's a subplot in the movie about Yitzhak trying to leave to join a cruise ship production of Rent. I believe the Criterion Edition (and maybe the old DVD release?) has several scenes building that story in the deleted scenes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Webhamster Henry:

@Ester I recalled that subplot; didn't remember if it was "song-i-fied"

WR:

I moved to NYC in "92. My kids were born in '88 and '91. Worked at a non-profit that had a Broadway show benefit performance every year. I did not participate every year, but I did see Cats, Le Mis, and Ragtime. Also took the family to Cats & Le Mis. That was my 90s
  7:31pm
Listener Gregory:

I enjoyed that Philipino song.

@doctorj, I have bad news for you: Sense and Sensibility is a novel! Sorry.

@LG, you are correct, so...?

I do love Jessica Molasky (and her husband, John Pizzarelli).

A dirty martini is made with sweet vermouth and bitters, right? It certainly looks dirty.

@diciassette, make sure the soil has been organic for at least 4 years, 3 if you can't find that.

As long as it's not Cats...

RAGTIME actually has a nice score.
  7:53pm
Listener Gregory:

I actually saw Ragtime!!! OK, in Chicago, but it was a big production. I found myself put off by the huge, complicated moving sets, but my friends really liked it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm

Well, the original book is pretty interesting and fun!

Not sure about evil actors. There were a bunch of crazy/objectionable actors who were Trump suporters, like Jon Voigt or Randy Quaid (I think), but evil? How about Bill Cosby! He was an actor as well as comedian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm

I experienced the original Broadway version of My Fair Lady in the womb, apparently.

Prince? What?
  8:58pm
Listener Gregory:

Evil actor: OJ Simpson?? He certainly acted quite a bit (literally), albeit not in musicals.
  9:00pm
Listener Gregory:

I would totally go to that Prince musical you describe. Why no remake?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:01pm

Thanks Bronwyn! What was that musical that Prince was nearly involved with.. was it a Bogdanovich thing?
🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:02pm

Mama mia was massive successful. Most successful juke box musical?
