Taqbir  Aisha Qandisha   Favoriting Taqbir  Taqbir  2021  Taqbir are a post punk band who encourage and empower North African women to be themselves. Growing up in Morocco, pursuing the simple pleasures of freedom of self-expression – especially through the production of non-censored music – could cost you your life. As members of a society that teaches women to stay silent, obedient, and essentially powerless, Taqbir use their music to create a space for people like themselves to freely express their anger. Working against a culture that deems their music and outspokenness an insult to the national religion, Taqbir have carved out a space as a punk band of colour whose voices and images are something their younger selves so desperately needed as an inspiration and a statement of hope. By working in the same musical and political environment, Taqbir are under threat with every project they work on, and every inch of press that surrounds them. Also shunned by their biological families, they are punished in other cruel ways for their bravery, but in the face of this Taqbir are a band desperate to build a new family or place of refuge for those who don’t fit in.    0:02:03 (Pop-up)
Black Eyes  Deformative   Favoriting Black Eyes  Dischord  2003  Black Eyes are Dan, Daniel, Hugh, Jacob, and Mike. They began playing as Black Eyes in August of 2001, although most of the band had played together previously in Trooper and the No-Gos before that. The band's first-full length was released on Dischord in 2003 following several singles on Ruffian Records and Planaria. Black Eyes created a unique live experience as the members made a symmetrical shape on stage, two drummers, one on either side of the stage, two bass players, one at the back and one at the front, and one guitarist in the middle. Their shows were chaotic and often melted down into frenzied, rhythmic jam sessions, with most of the audience partaking in the mayhem by the end of the set.    0:04:31 (Pop-up)
The Chinese Stars  Girls of Las Vegas   Favoriting A Rare Sensation  Three One G. Inc  2004  Spawned from influential, legendary Providence bands that came and regrettably dismantled before and vowing to “terrorize parents, authority figures and the psyche of the free world” emerged a band that is as catchy as it is confrontational. Listen to any of The Chinese Stars’ albums and you will notice that within their seemingly controlled, relatively smooth sound undoubtedly lie volatility, disease, and dark humor. Traces of mental illnesses past and present are only somewhat shrouded, lingering directly below the oftentimes deceptively innocuous dance beats and grooves.    0:06:22 (Pop-up)
SPLLIT  Adobe House   Favoriting Ledder Cote/Adobe House  Feel It Records  2022  SPLLIT is a post punk band from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This song is a tribute to the adobe house in Presidio, TX where we wrote and recorded for a few days around the new year, 2020-2021. Also serves as a bonus to "Spllit Sides" and as the start of something new.    0:09:42 (Pop-up)

ONETWOTHREE  Buy Buy Buy   Favoriting ONETWOTHREE  Kill Rock Stars  2021  ONETWOTHREE's first album doesn't have a name but that's just as it should be for a band that's deceptively simple, mysterious and yet somehow familiar. Three women bassists/singers from classic Swiss post-punk bands dot their insistent, minimal music with drum patters, synths, chants, commands and joyous wordplay with their sometimes cynical, sometimes sensual take on leisure and consumer culture. The group is appropriately DIY, self-contained and self-produced - their debut was written and played almost entirely by themselves. ONETWOTHREE's songs blend into a whole, creating a momentum and their own kinetic, strange reality which fun-house mirrors our own. ONETWOTHREE are: Klaudia Schifferle (Kleenex/Liliput) + Madlaina Peer (Noknows) + Sara Schaer (TNT , Souldawn)    0:13:17 (Pop-up)

Brian Brain  Careering   Favoriting Culture  Secret Records  1980  Martin Atkin's band covering Public Image LTD's 1979 classic song... A year later! The original song is from Metal Box/Second Edition, an album he also played on, though, not this particular song. But what about the "other" Brian Brain and his career? Brian Maurice Brain (born 13 September 1940, in Worcester) is a former English first-class cricketer whose career with Worcestershire and Gloucestershire stretched over more than two decades. He was capped by Worcestershire in 1966 and by Gloucestershire in 1977. For most of the rest of the 1960s, Brain continued to play a dozen games a season or slightly more, as well as a handful of one-day matches, and to pick up around 40 wickets a year. In 1969, however, he played 19 times in first-class cricket and snared 73 wickets at just over 25 runs apiece; he also appeared 13 times in one-day cricket, albeit with considerably less success. In 1970 he played only seven first-class matches, then for the next two seasons he was entirely a one-day player, turning out 20 times in List A cricket but not at all in the longer form of the game. Reading his wiki page is an exercise in futility when it comes to understanding how the fuck cricket works.    0:27:10 (Pop-up)
Jah Wobble  Swan Lake   Favoriting Metal Box - Rebuilt In Dub  Cleopatra Records  2021  "Metal Box is the second studio album by Public Image Ltd, released by Virgin Records on 23 November 1979. The album takes its name from the round metal canister which contained the initial pressings of the record. It was later reissued in standard vinyl packaging as Second Edition in February 1980 by Virgin Records in the United Kingdom, and by Warner Bros. Records and Island Records in the United States. The album was a departure from PiL's 1978 debut First Issue, with the band moving into a more avant-garde sound characterised by John Lydon's cryptic lyrics, propulsive dub-inspired rhythms led by bassist Jah Wobble, and an abrasive, "metallic" guitar sound developed by guitarist Keith Levene. (R.I.P.) Metal Box is widely regarded as a landmark of post-punk." This version is Jah Wobble's marvelous re-working & re-imagining of the song. From Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to Public Image Limited to Jah Wobble, the trajectory of this song is fantastic, It is wise to love every version.    0:32:19 (Pop-up)
Wine Lips  Fly Swatter   Favoriting Wine Lips  Wine Lips  2019  "Toronto based garage punk psych rockers, Wine Lips hit the stage for the first time in the fall of 2015. Initially a part time project between songwriter/guitar player, Cam Hilborn and drummer Aurora Evans, the band began playing clubs in Toronto, stretching organically to surrounding cities, and then into Quebec. By mid 2017 it was clear that the band members were ready to make a full-time commitment. Wine Lips released their self-titled debut LP on indie label Fried Records and set out on their first 5-province tour east to the Maritimes. And they haven’t looked back since. A chance meeting resulted in an April 2018 tour of Hong Kong and China, where they were received by enthusiastic audiences. Never ones to let the dust settle, the band released their follow up LP “Stressor” in March 2019 and toured North America relentlessly until early 2020. The release of Stressor along with endless tour dates earned the band an ardent following and saw some of the album tracks featured prominently on television and Netflix. The band spent most of their free time in 2020 writing and recording their phenomenal third full length record “Mushroom Death Sex Bummer Party” at The Sugar Shack in London, Ontario with Simon Larochette." AUS!Funkt  Don't Leave Me On Red   Favoriting Pay To Play  Self-Released  2022  Released November 11, 2022. AUS!Funkt is a Toronto based art-disco/post-punk band. Rejecting the lyrical and musical excesses of rock, aus!Funkt combines the groove of electronic music with the aggression of post-punk. Beats seduce the body into movement, freeing it from its torpor. On top, the guitar spurts out clouds of noise, while the bass supplies the melody. The lyrics provoke the mind with their realism and repetition Aus!Funkt (Bandcamp)  *   0:42:39 (Pop-up)
Priors  New Pleasure   Favoriting New Pleasure  Slovenly Recordings  2018  "Slovenly Recordings zooms into a new universe somewhere between their trademark trashy echo-poonk and future-shock squalls with “New Pleasure” by Montreal quintet PRIORS. Hailing, scaling, and wailing from a long-scrambling Canadian scene whose rep is not as revered as it should be, PRIORS furiously scrunches together lacerating fuzz riffs, maniacal snare drum abuse, skittish analog shivers, and savagely scared shouting that's sometimes double-tracked into microchip-loose robot nervousness. PRIORS idea of "letting up" is a quick drum intro like on "Sunshine," the plower pop of "At Your Leisure," the half-minute instro-intermission of "Life Part 2," or, uh... Oh who are we kidding? They don't let up, and they don't kid. A frozen stare into some slate-grey abyss is their "look” -- two minutes of pummel, their "sound." Avoidance of nuclear war or any other waste of time their "career trajectory." “New Pleasure” -- their leap-ahead second LP -- is the next album to convince you that rock'n'roll not only has gas in the tank, but space rocket fuel too, burning off into worlds beyond this square one. - Eric Davidson (New Bomb Turks, Livids; author, We Never Learn) credits released November 16, 2018" Priors (Bandcamp)    0:47:50 (Pop-up)

İstanbul Şarkıcıları  Ayva Çiçek Açmış   Favoriting Ayva Çiçek Açmış  Bip!  1980  Turkish Disco at its absolute finest! It's quite hard to find any info on this band but they released 7 albums on the Bip! label out of Turkey in 79/80. This particular release is rather hard to find on vinyl and pricey but oh, oh so worth it!    1:02:52 (Pop-up)
Antonis Antoniou  Syntagi   Favoriting   Ajabu!  2022  Following his critically acclaimed debut solo album Kkismettin, Antonis Antoniou, the driving force behind award-winning bands Monsieur Doumani and Trio Tekke, has returned with another unconventional and skillfully produced solo album, expanding his musical language even further towards exhilarating and unmapped territories. With one foot in the East and the other in the West, with one ear in the past and the other in the future, Antonis Antoniou boldly dives deeper into his experimental and often eccentric practice, inventing new methodologies and developing new contexts, wherein various seemingly incompatible ingredients find fertile ground to intertwine. Throisma translates as “rustling”. The lyrics sung in Antoniou’s native Cypriot Greek are characterised by a poetic reflection on existentialism, calling for a spiritual awakening, and a neglect towards the “Skárta dóra” (useless gifts) imposed by capitalist structures and evil bodies that aim to keep our minds and souls in custody. He asks: “What are the things that keep our souls from rustling? Why do we continuously fall into the trap of shutting ourselves, depriving the breeze of love from reaching the depths of our psyche and vibrating its leaves? How deep have we buried our childhood joy, and what’s the price we need to pay in order to unbury it?” BUY THIS RECORD ON BANDCAMP IT IS AMAZING    1:08:12 (Pop-up)
Kuunatic  Full Moon Spree   Favoriting Gate of Klüna  Glitterbeat Records  2021  KUUNATIC is a thrilling Tokyo based tribal-psych trio bolstered by diverse global sonics and powerful female vocals. Drawing on the members' different musical and cultural perspectives, their music explores ritual drumming, pulsing bass lines, atmospheric keyboard sounds and Japanese traditional instruments. Having previously released an EP (“Kuurandia” / 2017) as well as a split 7” (with Taiwanese fuzz psych garage band Crocodelia), “Gate of Klüna” is KUUNATIC’s much awaited debut album. Produced by Tim DeWit (Gang Gang Dance) the record reveals a mesmerizing soundworld that transcends genres and hemispheres and succeeds in being both boldly experimental and wildly catchy. KUUNATIC are Fumie Kikuchi on keys and vocals, Yuko Araki on drums and vocals and Shoko Yoshida on bass and vocals.    1:12:50 (Pop-up)
Chrissy Zebby Tembo  I'm Not Made Of Iron   Favoriting Chris Z Tembo  Chris Editions  1977  Chrissy Zebby Tembo is the drummer of the Ngozi family. This time, the album is under his name and Paul Ngozi is his guitarist. Wild fuzz guitars all over, African beats and extra-cool vocals -- completely stoned music. People say it is easily one of the best African psychedelic rock albums ever recorded -- raw, rough, with a gaping charm and tons of front-and-center fuzz guitar over basic, ultra-catchy rock/pop tunes reminiscent in style to The Velvet Underground. This song is universal in its appeal...we have all been there...    1:15:43 (Pop-up)

Affiliate Links  Recovery Position   Favoriting Enough Light  We Are Busy Bodies  2022  Released Sep 9. "Enough Light is songwriter Bradley Davis’s debut solo release as Affiliate Links. After more than a decade immersed in instrumental post-rock as a member of Fresh Snow, Enough Light is as bold an about-face as anyone familiar with Davis’ previous band could expect. Davis recorded most of Enough Light at home — it was later mixed by Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck, Alvvays) — in the summer of 2021 while away from work as a teaching assistant. “I have never been good at relaxing,” he admits, so when collaborating with others wasn’t an option, he made working on Enough Light part of his routine, setting himself tasks and deadlines, which kept the creativity flowing. “I had already recorded ‘Walk on Water’ and ‘The Dedicated Organ’ (both mixed by Ben Etter, whose credits include Cate Le Bon, Deerhunter, and Franz Ferdinand), and I used those as jumping-off points for the rest of the album.” Davis began exploring language and lyrical expressiveness from these initial sparks, looking for “poetry in everyday language” and ways to repurpose jargon and conversations to examine relationships from different perspectives." Essential Logic  Alien Boys   Favoriting Land Of Kali  Hiss And Shake Records  2022  "The Land Of Kali’ (Co-produced by Youth), is the first new Essential Logic studio album in 43 years, and features the forthcoming new single ‘Prayer For Peace’, a re-imagining of the X-Ray Spex track from the tragically overlooked album, ‘Conscious Consumer’ (1995) on which Lora also played sax. “Polystyrene and I were living in a Krishna community in Worcestershire in the early 80s. We came together for the first time musically after X-Ray Spex to record the original version of this song. in 2019, I decided to record my own take as a tribute to the special times we shared. I hope Poly likes this new version too". Further tracks penned for release from the album include the dystopian, lockdown-inspired ‘Alien Boys’ and ‘Sky Rocket’, written with daughter Malini, about the fairground of life."  *   1:38:24 (Pop-up)

Pozi  Slightly Shaking Cells   Favoriting Slightly Shaking Cells  PRAH Recordings  2022  Pozi come steeped in the lineage of the very best weirdo British indie pop. The trio of drummer/vocalist Burroughs, violinist/vocalist Rosa Brook and bassist/vocalist Tom Jones have a skittish, restless, almost anxious energy. New track ‘Slightly Shaking Cells’ acknowledges the disappointment that comes with the realisation you are ageing, but counters this with the argument that time brings knowledge of your own mind. “This song is inspired by figures such as Boudica, Cleopatra and Xena the Warrior Princess, and the kind of immortality you can create through believing in your own strength. The song then switches to someone admiring another person from afar, zooming into everyday existence away from matters of life and death.”  *   1:46:43 (Pop-up)
Pill  Naked Muse   Favoriting A Decade Deeper  Kemado Records  2018  This song does not appear on any official Pill release, only the comp. PILL is a four-piece draw from a deep pool of influences including New York City noise, krautrock, Sun Ra modalities, telepathic dreams and all six senses. Their music is animated by the madcap ingenuity of a foursome finding a sense of joy and play in expressions of caustic, black humor and incisive critique...“We get words like protest, skronk, violent, and angry, which is all well and fine,” said Spaulding. “But it’s not soapbox, manifesto music — it’s experimental, emotional.”    1:50:07 (Pop-up)
Dummy  Final Weapon   Favoriting Mandatory Enjoyment  Trouble In Mind Records  2021  Los Angeles band Dummy refuses to slow down. After releasing two cassette EP’s in 2020 (on Popwig and Born Yesterday respectively), Dummy’s debut full-length album arrives via Chicago’s Trouble in Mind Records. Employing pummeling guitars and celestial ambience within the same breath, the band folds a myriad of reference points into their drone-pop style. Influence from '60s melodicism and '90s UK noise pop can be found woven in with inspiration from spiritual jazz, Japanese new age, and Italian minimalism.    1:53:15 (Pop-up)

Returning to the city, post-nine years in isolation and deep immersion in musical and self study, Kutiman connects the dots between Can, Arthur Verocai & Tame Impala, delivering a fresh reimagining of his eclectic groove-laced sound whilst reconnecting with society, embracing his roots and welcoming the unknown. As comfortable scoring orchestral suites as he is bridging sounds from Fela-inspired horn arrangements, electric era-Miles funk, classical Indian ragas, or even chopping environmental field recordings, Kutiman’s journey to his latest full-length, Open is a story of complete absorption in sonic fusions.

Jeff & Jane Hudson  The Girl From Ipanema   Favoriting Flesh  J & J Records  1983  Jeff & Jane Hudson are a husband/wife duo from Boston who got their start in the art punk band The Rentals in 1977. The Rentals broke up in 1980 and Jeff & Jane relocated to Manhattan where they opened for Suicide and quickly signed with No Wave label Lust/Unlust. Their first single No Clubs was released in late 1980 and showcased a lo-fi avant garde all synthesizer band. The World Trade EP came next in 1981, expanding their brand of post-nuclear electronic pop. Their vocals qualities were distinct; Jeff quivery and drug-addled while Jane more detached and icy. The duo reached their pinnacle with 1982′s seminal Flesh. Perhaps one of the United States biggest achievements in the entire “synth” movement of the 80s. The music was electro-pop employing early Roland synths and the TR-808 drum machine. Jeff’s lyrics flirted with technology and politics, while Jane wrote about cultural and psychological situations. Completely self produced by the band, the record has since been oft-cited as a groundbreaking and pivotal LP of the post-punk era, who’s original copies are now heavily coveted by collectors.    2:01:46 (Pop-up)
