Great tunes! Love listening to stoopid old rock and roll on 45s on a Saturday night. I first heard WFMU in the late 80s on work visits to Summit NJ from Germany, and one of the shows I listened to when possible was The Hound. This show reminds me a little of it, which is a very good thing!

Yo, Haversack. it was at the end of bad animals so didn't have a chance to say the story of your cat pygian struck a chord. A long time ago we - (when i was part of a we) - had a cat that lived eighteen years. And well you know, when you lose a pet after having it that long it goes deep. Just saying, I know.

If you can find used copies, the 1970s trade paperbacks "The Apex Treasury" and "Best Of Bijou Funnies" are packed with essential artists and stories. They were also reissued as a single book two-fer in the 80s. Blasted my young head off my shoulders.

And there's the recent all text history of the undergrounds, "Dirty Pictures" by Brian Doherty. It's had a mixed reception, mostly because of the dumb title and cover design. I'm reading it now, and it has its faults (so many sprawling run-on sentences), but on the whole quite worthwhile.

Jim Franklin drew Armadillo Comix, a truly demented form of Texas surrealism. He also had better things to do - he ran The Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin. But I wish he would have made a few more funny/not funny books.
