These electronics companies are not too swift in honoring warranties. According to them, anything bad that happens to your phone, tablet or computer is all your fault. I'm still working on getting caught up with your recent shows in the Archives. Glad to be back Your Fleetwood Mac show with Pete next week should be a winner. Loved that era of the band.

My older sister brought Lick My Decals Off and the first Ry Cooder album home on the same day from the library of Rio Hondo College. The original Decals on Straight Records had a lyric sheet. Gerry from Miami:

Jon Brion using some fancy language there, naming his album "Synecdoche New York." I first came upon that word(pronounced sin-ECK-do-kee) in a college Spanish literature class. A poet had chosen to express the idea of a bird by using just the word "feather." Part for the whole. Can be used for the reverse as well.
  12:03pm
Dean:

I bet Brion also used it because letters two and three, Y and N, mimic the initial letters of New York. That's chiasmus.

Synechdoche New York is also the name of a Charlie Kaufman movie featuring the late, great Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Maybe the song is from the soundtrack?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm

Note that Synecdoche New York is a movie and that selection is from the soundtrack. I've not seen the movie but I have seen the name and did not know the meaning of synecdoche. I thought it was a place.
  12:08pm

Schenectady, hence also a pun.

Like metonymy, synecdoche is a trope, widely deployed in ordinary speech and in poetry.

Saw “Synecdoche, New York” when it came out. I believe it was directed by Charlie Kaufman, who wrote the screenplays for “Being John Malkovich” and “Adaptation.” Worth one’s time as long as one has narrative patience.

Hold It AKA “the band’s break song.” Even the Byrds played a (faux) version of it on their Dr. Byrds medley.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm

Bird Comps came in many flavors. He recorded for Savoy, Dial and Verve for the most part, and his recordings were repackaged usually label specific, sometimes just the master takes, sometimes just alternate takes, sometimes both/complete. Then there are live recordings released out there.
You can't go wrong starting with the Savoy Master Takes (from when Bebop was exploding out, brand new). (of course, there's also the choice of vinyl, cd, and I'm sure it's available for download or streaming somewhere).

Bob, are you absolutely sure that this Frank Carlberg track is from 1952? According to several sources, he didn't start recording until 1992 (and this certainly does not sound like a 1952 recording, either musically or aurally). P.S.: I confess that I had never heard of Frank Carlberg until now, and I love this track -- whenever it was recorded!

doctorjazz, I missed that part -- thanks for the info. I still don't get why the year is listed as "1952/2022," though. Plenty of recorded performances are inspired by earlier records; that doesn't mean the date of the earlier record should be considered part of the date of the later one. Or was the Monk recording actually sampled? If so, I didn't hear it.

Peter K is referring to the Year Column, which lists it as 1952/2022. It should just be 2022 (if I, God Forbid, released a new version of A Love Supreme this week, you wouldn't date it 1965/2022, just 2022. And you'd run for cover...)
