In case there are any listeners planning to see The Lemonheads mid-December in NY or Jersey City for their 30th anniversary of It’s a Shame About Ray tour, the SF show was really bad (and I’ve since read that this was the case at other shows).

Evan Dando was in no condition to do a show. He was super high on something. In addition to his being completely wasted (he couldn’t even keep a grip on his guitar pick) his voice has changed so much, he no longer has the vocal range for the songs. As a fan, this was a sad, painful experience.
Avatar 11:20am
Bob Brainen:

Wendy, jeez, that's a drag. Never knew what to make of Evan D.
He had the gift, the looks, and, sadly, the addiction as well.

Wendy Are you aware that Evan Dando may be responsible for the death of Nikki Sudden?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am

Evan Dando. Some people have it all, the talent, the looks, the sensibility, and it all just slips away. Sad news.

The Byrds' Why (the 7" version not the album one) is such a great track. I still have the 45. It and the Eight Miles A-side just erupt via record needle. I memorized McGuinn's solo on Why; and that ending! Superb. I saw them at the Village Gate, Oct. '66 during their "5D" era. Brain still ringing from that night.

doc, last year I decided to embrace the par-baking heresy (part-baking the potatoes to reduce moisture) though, unlike Joan Nathan in the Times, I still use an egg binder. This morning, I had the crazy thought, what if, instead of grating the potatoes, I shredded them on the mandoline?

Love LP's Billie posts, full of small revelations (e.g., that she never, ever scats, except to direct the band!). The Walter Page post was special, too.

Dean, LPs have gotten so expensive/overpriced, that CDs have been having another (slight) resurgence in sales, from what I've read. I can understand why; been buying mostly on LP (when available), but CD seems more and more appealing.

I had a Wednesday purchasing crises over a reissued Steely Dan "Can't Buy a Thrill", 45 RPM, UHQR, for rediculous money, had an intervention on the Ridgewood Radio Board and held out (so far...)

Dean:

The purchasers of the CD, which doesn't include the 10" content, are the same order of magnitude as those who opted for the all-vinyl. A couple comments are critical of the unavailability of that additional content on CD or file. CDs are appealing to me, because I often listen while cooking, which means I don't want to be interrupted every 20 minutes. To my mind much of the vinyl market is fetish-driven. Even though I've been a huge vinyl fan for decades, I think the hype is excessive.

Dean:

That's the only Steely Dan album for which I'd consider paying a premium. But not that kinda premium.

doctorjazz:

I agree-it's cool and faddish for now (I never stopped buying vinyl when available either), maybe, like many fads, will run its course and demand will drop some (with prices).
I do really love that album, and it got a great review on Analog Planet (the UHQR), but it's too dear. I did spring for one UHQR (Hendrix's Bold as Love), which was expensive, but less than the Dan's. I haven't had the heart to even take the plastic off it after a year or more.

OK, up off my keister, will start preparing for dinner, music still on (But likely not comment much)

I think i caught Evans once at the Gate as well, they had an Upstairs at the Gate where pianists would sometimes appear solo)

Wendy, I second that. When you feel it, TDK, we're all eyes.

I'm hearing Satie in Peace Piece today.

Okay okay. Summer '71, I was just walking by on Bleecker. Village Gate doors were open. No charge. Big dinner crowd noisily ignored Evans & group. I waited till late. Suburban diners left, leaving a few other longhair music freaks like me to listen. I nodded to the other 3 or 4 others. We gathered at the front table in front of the band. Only us, band, and bartender. Bill took our requests.
