Just saw a doc on the Dan - & Fagan notably says he was into TV music - 'Jazz ...& Fake Jazz'. Another person observes it isn't really Fusion like other 70s musics ...it occupies its own place not quite Pop or Jazz ...exactly.
I just liked that its surface was smooth ...but its underside was sardonic. It *sounded* good ...but it wasn't about *feeling* good like the other features 1970s YachtRawk & stuff. It *related* to Jazz ...& they somehow got all this onto the Charts & the Radio.
Unfortunately - people who think they're smooth & trendy - like audiophiles - did embrace them, it's true...

' Captain Beyond is an American rock supergroup formed in Los Angeles in 1971. Consisting of former Deep Purple singer Rod Evans, former Johnny Winter drummer Bobby Caldwell, former Iron Butterfly guitarist Larry Reinhardt and former Iron Butterfly bassist Lee Dorman, the band had an eclectic style bridging elements of hard rock, progressive rock and jazz fusion with space rock. They released three albums between 1972 and 1977. '

Understandable. Probly had ambiguous feelings @ dif stages... In fact, I resented them being Popular with the Trendies - but liked listening along when they came on the radio. Fagen's voice is certainly distinctive ...often - as with all Sounds - an actual plus in Pop ...even if a Bad Plus...
Maybe even that's why the Smoooth playing & recording is palatable - the contrast. Or the other way.
