Handy Haversack:

So, full disclosure, my work published this book. It has got a ton of attention, which it well deserves. But it's great that Mark always points out that what China's govt. is doing to those it controls is just further along on a spectrum of choices that is abetted or even created by U.S. companies and that our govt. could use at any point on those people that it controls. Sinophobia focuses a lot of attention on what the CCP does but tends to make U.S. writers and critics ignore our systemic complicity in the same forces.

I was actually with my Japanese wife, and it was her account. of course I don't have my credit card numbers saved in apple store or anything

Hi all. @Handy, complicity is important, but IMHO all leftists should remain extremely vigilant re: those who would minimize the cruelty and viciousness of the imperialist FAKE communism of the CCP surveillance state.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm
Handy Haversack:

Oh, WORD, Ike: just saying that there's a lot of willful blindness in the mass coverage of CCP sins vis-a-vis those of U.S. surveillance capitalists and their govt. enablers.

Amazing to think of English as the language of antiracism given its (as Darren and coela said) deep imbrication in the strategy of racism. Great interview, Mark. Perception-opening.

mark's ATLANTIC link had this - For him, numbers are a mystical code masking universal truths, possibly controlled by some ancient superpower or secret society: “Every time I saw some sort of number, I couldn’t walk away until I had forcefully memorized that number and it was stuck in my mind.”

i kinda relate - i was reading and rereading about countable and uncountable infinities. from bio of math guy PAUL ERDOS. and it just blew my mind (man).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
StringOFperils:

The novel sounds like a worthwhile read indeed. The 're-education' camps have been in the news for quite some time, but China does not suffer being told about its human rights concepts, and people hereabouts want i-phones and thousands of other things, cheap and fast and disposable, three words that increasingly apply to ourselves as well, within capitalism; we should leverage our own governments and examine our personal habits when looking at this, as these things will definitely come home to roost. Our governments are not some body existing 'over there', our governments are us.

Elon got voted off the island - but it was his own election.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:56pm

And Twitter collects a ton more info that TikTok actually does. So while tossing TikTok is a thoroughly admirable goal, we do let blind eyes form to the deep ties between our capitalists and China.
