Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Marc Rusch, engineer for CIMP records, recognizes what you describe, Dave. His recordings capture live acoustic instruments remarkably well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
doctorjazz:

Some audiophile labels will use a well placed mic or a few mics, to capture the music AND the room sound.
  2:14pm
Dean:

Yep, that's Rusch, doc. Minimal miking, but sensitive to the sound reflected from barriers in the room.

Heard Battle Trance at a house concert. Distortion, volume, saturation...they had it all.

yeah Dean....

It's like Pauline Oliveros' "deep listening" or Stuart Dempster's recordings from cisterns.

A certain irony: doctorjazz and I dig our "audiophile" stereo systems, but I listen to WFMU on my crappy Chromebook.

Loving this "27"!

H'mm. I usually like FMU on the fancy big system (especially certain shows on the Mothership stream, where I strongly recommend the 256k AAC stream I set up while I was working there).

Drummer is limited to 128k MP3 for Historical Technical Reasons, but it'd be great to fix that eventually.

Jeff...for more bits....i concur....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm
coelacanth∅:

it certainly would be good to get better quality for the drummer stream...especially now that most of the shows geared toward people who actually listen to music and appreciate sound are on the drummer stream (and sheena's)

Increased bit rate for the stream would be wonderful (I also stream through my stereo system). I do find much variation in sound quality from show to show-I suspect the variations to do with the DJ's home streaming gear).

And a better-sounding codec than MP3 is really helpful!

In particular, the way MP3 fails when hit by sharp impulses like vinyl ticks and pops is way ugly – and the artifacts get mixed in with the music so your ear/brain system can't filter them out and ignore them the way you can when the noises are reproduced more cleanly(!). At least, that's my observation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
coelacanth∅:

i always use aac on the main fmu if not frequency modulation. i swear i can tell the difference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm
coelacanth∅:

Thank you for that brief explanation Jeff. good to have some articulation on that
Avatar 2:37pm
Jeff Moore:

Anyway, for those who're wondering – the reason the alt streams have been stuck at 128k MP3 is that the automatic archive creation software depends on ripping the stream, and that software has a built-in expectation of 128k MP3, and the project to re-jigger that has enough dependencies to juggle that the project to make a change never got off the ground.

Whereas... a few years back I could singlehandedly add some high-bitrate AAC streams to main WFMU, do a lot of listening tests, and demonstrate that adding them didn't saturate the available bandwidth and make anything else less reliable, all without involving others or breaking anything a lot of other stuff was depending on.

I use streamers at home-it was a Slingbox. Now a Technics sl-g700 CD player-neither gives me a choice of mp3 or other streams. At the office I use an old iPad3 to stream WFMU, d I use the Apple codex on the main station (bit I listen through a small speaker, not sure I'd hear much difference there)

The discussion (on air) has been really interesting!
Avatar 2:54pm
Jeff Moore:

When you're listening to the mothership stream (which you obviously shouldn't be doing now, because this show is on the Drummer stream), the URL for the high-bitrate AAC stream is:

stream0.wfmu.org...

...and a special weird meta-URL meant to point to whatever probably sounds best (which could involve a different codec in future, but which right now still points to that same 256k AAC) is:

stream0.wfmu.org...

...and the one I usually listen to (but which isn't officially published anywhere, partly because it's a single stream out of the station and doesn't have the backup/failover magic the production streams have) is:

stream0.wfmu.org...

This one comes via an audio chain using an A/D converter whose sound I prefer a bit to one in the regular main streaming chain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
doctorjazz:

I have to see if I can find those url links on the Technic app (I spend most of my time on the Streams, so it doesn't come up all that often).
Avatar 3:16pm
Jeff Moore:

↳ doctorjazz @3:02
Does the Technics app use some sort of directory of available streams? Is there a way to paste in your own arbitrary stream URL, for things which don't appear in a directory?

I see that one of the listed things it can play from is called just "Internet Radio", but there isn't much further info I can find.

It might be possible to stuff an arbitrary URL in via Chromecast or Google Assistant or if there's TuneIn support...

Anyway. Shutting up and listening now.
