You did a cover of a Hindi song "Jaan Pehchaan Ho" a year ago I think. As a person who speaks Hindi, I approve of your cover. It's a tough song to sing!

Writing a foreign language song down phonetically and singing it that way is from my experience the best way to do it! I also sing a lot in foreign languages which I do not know.

Here is an English translation of the song. It's quite a accurate, except I would say that "Jaan Pehchaan Ho" means in the context of the song "Let's get to know each other". Here's the link to the translation: lyricstranslate.com...

Palm Springs for Modernism Week?
Sounds exotic.
Avatar 3:15pm
Mr. Oxford:

↳ Mr. Oxford @3:13
I meant "Jaan Pehchaan Ho" translates to "Let's get to know each other" rather than the "Let there be familiarity" which the translation suggests. The rest seems accurate.

OMG, thank you, Mr. Oxford! I don’t know why I never thot of that before! So are you midnight sun Northern Europe?
Avatar 3:17pm

↳ Becky Ebenkamp @3:15
Yeah during summers there are nights when the sun doesn't really go down. I live in Estonia, which is a European Union country located very close to Finland and Sweden. So it is quite comparable to Nordic countries' weather.

I have a guess to what the lyrics mean. A little different than what the poster wrote: all that talk about heart stealers… I think they are secretly in love but parents set them up for arranged marriages to others.

Becky Ebenkamp:

There’s that voice… Are you learning for a trip, Deb?
Avatar 3:35pm
Mr. Oxford:

↳ Becky Ebenkamp @3:22
Hahaha, I don't think the lyrics allude to arranged marriages at all. It is just a song about young people crushing on each other. Indian songs' lyrics ironically never allude to arranged marriage and instead are always about falling in love. These songs are from movies and most Indian movies are (again ironically) about love between two people who then get married.

That being said, I DO like your interpretation though. There should be an Indian song that addresses arranged marriages haha.

Oh wow hahaha. I have never seen the movie. It is actually not that popular. "Jaan Pehchaan Ho" also is not that popular among Indians as it is among Garage Rock fans in North America. I think it was featured in a commercial that's why.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm

That is hilarious. I’ll let you know the origins of the popularity in America as best I know. But first, the movie review: After this amazing, lavish musical numbers with fuzz guitar and masked performers… we never see those people ever again. I think they are the hotel band and the movie is about the guests. Who begin mysteriously dying off one by one. It is a fucking Agatha Christie movie!
Avatar 3:47pm
Debbie Davenport:

↳ Mr. Oxford @3:42
yeah! Thanks! I noticed how much dutch is like english too. That's encouraging. Not at first visually but phonetically. Moeder Natuur/ Mother Nature, etc.
But we don't travel, so I don't feel like i'd use it. Might put it off.

Debbie Davenport:

Lots of spanish speakers in California and Oregon. I should of picked that up. For some reason French sinks in better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Becky Ebenkamp:

The tape of the dance number: started circulating in early to mid ‘90s. Everyone who collected weirdo stuff had seen it by about 1995. The rumor was that Lux & Ivy from the Cramps found it and put it out because of the the Phantom Surfers, a fun Cali band that also wore masks.

It stayed dormant for awhile, but then the song and video popped up in the 2001 movie Ghost World, based on the comic. That exposed it to many more people. The beer commercial was a while after that.
Avatar 3:49pm
Mr. Oxford:

↳ Becky Ebenkamp @3:44
Hahaha. Yes, the phenomena of song in a movie featuring people who never appear in the movie again is known in India as an "Item number". Usually in the movies (which are essentially musicals), they have songs which are "sung" by the main characters. Some songs are out of place so they just put them in the backdrop of a hotel/casino/ temple/what have you with people who never appear again in the movie haha. Sometimes they have a dedicated diva who isn't an actor to sing the "item number".

It sounds a thriller which shamelessly ripped off an Agatha Christie story. Stories were plagiarized a lot in old Indian movies haha.

I did NOT know the mid-90's tape/Cramps story. I am now remembering it being featured in Ghost World (I was too young in 2001 to have even known of the movie, I saw it in 2014 myself).

That is very interesting. Great DJs like you have so much valuable knowledge to share!

The beer commercial I remember seeing in Canada in 2011 I think. That's when I came to know the song is popular at least in North America.

I was taking an Air India plane back from England once and couldn’t help noticing the monie on the screen. Like many Indian films, it covered just about every genre: musical, romance, action—someone came out in a Scream mask at some point! As it got closer to the end I was really getting a deja vubvibe. Then, the climactic scene: The girl falls off the Ferris wheel and the guy saves her by grabbing her sari. It unravels a bit but she never hits the ground.

It was Indian Vertigo!

Avatar 4:07pm

↳ Becky Ebenkamp @4:02
That could be any Indian movie haha. It is a very common scene.

Also, at least in old Indian movies, people who were wearing band shirts (like the Doors for examples) are usually the bad guys/antagonists in the movie. I have this theory that filmmakers went out of their way to show that people who wore bad shirts were up to no good to discourage the youth from doing the same. In modern movies though, people wear all sorts of stuff.

I think they started putting English subtitles to Indian movies only after 2010. The few movies which were nominated for the Academy Awards or had a Cannes film festival would be available with subtitles.

Oh I've tried to get into Starcrawler but I just can't manage

I remember Bay City Rollers on AM radio would drive me crazy with Saturday Night. I've been addicted to Wired UP for the past year! I read the chat transcripts whenever I stream it. PeeWee Herman sent me! Love love love it Don!

Thanks for the cinema tips! Nice to meet you, Mr. Oxford.

Welcome Mr. Oxford! 👋

For the record, my fave 70s glam punk bands rn are the Harlots of 42nd Street and the Hollywood Brats

I couldn't decide how I felt about Starcrawler's music when I saw them, but the singer kept going on stage during MC50's set and was trying to draw attention to herself. I thought that was obnoxious. Wayne seemed to like it but that may of just been him being polite. Not sure.

Becky, I met Henri & Arrow from Starcrawler in person. Well, to each their own.

I hear some Joan Jett here! HAY!

Kittimu:

A couple days ago I realized the Discogs page for the Hollywood Brats has a scan of a CD booklet with all the lyrics on it, so I spent all Thursday evening setting up a page on the Genius Lyrics site for them

But that’s life in Hollywood. It’s not like I think they are terrible, just that they get an inordinate amount of attention.

I recently got this Stephen record in the mail. I love the song title.

and the song too of course

Cheree July:

Becky, I had a friend named Rebecca who decided to introduce them to me at Amoeba Hollywood. I didn't ask her to intoduce me to Henri and Arrow. It was a coincidence. Calm down.

Debbie Davenport:

That is kind of you Kittimu. Superfan!
  4:46pm
Kittimu:

but yeah I can't get into Starcrawler. Or the Starbenders. Or the Velveteers. I think most modern glam punk or punk-inspired bands are a bit heavy for me. I like Roxx Revolt and the Velvets though, they're good
  4:47pm
Kittimu:

....y'know, I think one of the Hammered Satin albums has a scan of the lyrics on Discogs as well. Maybe I need to make them a lyrics page too
  4:50pm
Cheree July:

Hey, I never claimed to be perfect or claimed to a Glam Punk expert ppl.
Avatar 4:50pm

one of my Hammered satin 7" records has lyrics if you need me to photograph them for you.
UFO I think

Becky Ebenkamp:

Such a great song. Um, Cheree, I said that in case you really liked the band—I worried that my previous note sounded snotty so I elaborated. Please don’t tell me to calm down. .
  4:51pm
Kittimu:

Sure, Debbie. I think you follow me on Instagram so you can probably send me a message through there.
  4:52pm
Kittimu:

Sorry I don't like Starcrawler much, Cheree. I promise I tried.
Avatar 4:53pm

OKay Kittimu. After Wired Up is over Gordon is taking me out to the movies, but I'll photograph it and message you in IG after that.

It's not the UFO single. It's the Reptillian single. That is such a beautiful song!!!

Hey, Mr. Fab, is it okay for me & Don to go over a few minutes. Don just told me to ask.🤔

I think you are overreacting. I don’t think I flamed you. Your note to me sounded sassy. I didn’t know why you were explaining that to me. No one cares what I think is cool.

I have Aspergers. I'm on the functional end of the Autism Spectrum. Sometimes I take things literally. That's why my note came off unintentionally sassy. Forgive me.🙏

Let’s chalk it up to a misunderstanding on both of our sides—I didn’t want you to think I was dissing your tastes. It’s hard to tell tone with chat sometimes.

Cheree July:

It's okay Becky. Glad we smoothed this out.
