A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hey Troublemakers. Music is as perfectly chosen as ever, Trouble. Thanks; you’re amazing!
Got one kid home sick for a second day. While I’m also apparently dealing with some kind of throat/lung infection. Particularly heinous winter, a not so merry go round of all of us with various sicknesses, including two weeks of giving each other Covid.
Took the kids to the East Elmhurst library last weekend and were treated to an excellent jazz quintet playing in the adjacent community room. Whenever in that area of Queens I’m silently paying tribute/communing with Malcolm X, whose last (and longest?) residence was a few blocks away from the library.
Picked up the James Cone book “Martin & Malcolm & America: a dream or a nightmare.” It’s good.

Trouble:

I hope it's not a xenophobic response, but just an easy way to tax someone who can't complain. the club scene is barely functioning in a way that allows small acts to tour without losing $, and now this? I had telebossa stay at my house when they came over to play a few gigs locally in 2011. one of them had to rent a cello here so as not to arouse suspicion that they might be coming over to play. that won't be so easy now to avoid johnny law.

I remember when "In the Rain"was charting that the music press had articles reporting that jukebox companies and bar owners were griping because it was 6 minutes long. They wanted labels to stick to 2-3 minute 45s so they would get more income.

StringOFperils:

That Washington Post obit for Burt Bacharach isn't as malign as it sounded above IMO. What hurts is that he's gone. He brought real sophistication to pop music on AM radio that was deceptively simple but really beautiful and transporting. Hearing it, as a child, was nothing less than discovering art as an idea; it was like a whole world opened up. Some of those hits are like little two minute concertos to the bittersweetness of life. Easy to pass off as piano-bar material, but for the listener that would be a tragedy. Most music doesn't even come close to the intelligence in that stuff.

In Canada, lots of thrift stores will take unwearable clothes that are too damaged, and bundle and sell to mechanic shops, painting companies, paint stores, and the like. Extra life as rags, and the charity still gets some much needed cash.

There's several pages (maybe even a full chapter, I don't recall) in the Elvis Costello book "Unfaithful Music & disappearing Ink" about the masterful way Bacharach wrote.

Well worth the read. I have the Bacharach / Costello disc "Painted From Memory" I love it.

He was all over AM radio during my childhood & even then I felt he was really something special. Catchy but with twists & turns the other "hit makers" of the day, weren't capable of. He will be missed

Here in NYC, cloth recycling exists only sporadically, but we have these "donation" boxes in gas stations and parking lots for clothes and shoes that are then sorted, sold in lots to thrift stores or, for the least wearable stuff, sent to Africa. It's a disaster.

This is from Dionne Warwick's introduction to The Bacharach & David Songbook (1970):

Good friends are those you want to be with as much as possible. Every time you're together, you learn from each other. Things you like and respect. As the friendship grows, you know you want others to meet them, enjoy their company, share your good fortune in knowing them. I'm not only talking about Burt and Hal. I'm also talking about the songs they have written. These men and their songs have been the very best friends I have ever had. They have made me aware of the beauty of the world as well as the heartaches -- helped me to know how to handle both extremes of living. They have helped me grow up in my understanding of myself and others.
