I spent nearly an hour looking for a Lalo Schifrin compilation that I bought a little while back. Finally found it. My Life in Music. I thought I bought it from bandcamp or Discogs but now think I got it from Schifrin web site directly.

4 CDs. I looked at schifrin.com and don't see it listed in the store currently.

Mannix was about my favorite TV show when I was a tween (or thereabouts). I remember the theme song as being compelling, though I can’t recall it now. I would never rewatch the show now and find out how terrible it really was.

WR:

Here is discogs listing for it.

Seems my timing to buy was good, though Aleph (a company specifically to release Schifrin) might reprint it.
Avatar 9:04pm
Observations:

↳ WR @9:02
Most, if not all, of the Aleph stuff contain late 1990s-early 2000s re-recordings of those compositions. I.e. different than the original LPs.

I play about 15-20 seconds of the Mannix theme on mostly one guitar string, so I could remind ya.

Just read that Charles Dickens’s “brass mechanical pickle fork” (sic) went for $6,120 at auction. David, be sure to save all your utensils. Your heirs will thank you.

Not just any old brass mechanical pickle fork! It was a *left-handed* brass mechanical pickle fork.

↳ Observations @9:04
Yes, while the discography details on the set are not very detailed, many of the selections are noted as published in 1979 , recorded live in 1999... etc. They do give explicit thanks to Clint Eastwood for the few Dirty Harry selections.

I have nearly a dozen OST albums from the 60s / 70s bought as cut outs but they are all packed away. (And that is a very small selection of his work.)
  9:23pm
Listener Gregory:

@Dean, naturally, the left-handed utensils are rarer and hence more valuable.
  9:25pm
Dean:

There's stuff like this:
https://www.discogs.com/master/1683284-Lalo-Schifrin-Seven-Classic-Albums

...but it's on a label famous for skirting IP issues. It's also just a random slice of his discography, obviously
Avatar 9:30pm

Check the introduction to next live track - listen to how the bass player flubs the bass intro. Lalo jumps in on piano and lays out the bass line for him. Then they take off!

My understanding is that European copyright law lets the right of reproduction expire much sooner than US law (which is roughly forever), and so these compilations are perfectly legal in Europe. When the artist is still alive, one might question whether they are ethical. On the other hand, if no one else is releasing this music, then I feel it is reasonable to put it out there.
Avatar 🥁 9:36pm
Listener Gregory:

↳ Observations @9:34
Ha!
  9:42pm
Dean:

I'm aware of national and international copyright regimes, but I don't believe what is perfectly legal in Europe allows distribution in the US. The ethics are certainly debatable, even when the author/composer/performer is dead.

The problem with copyright in the US is that "limited times" suffers from a Sorites paradox: add another year or two to an agreed-upon limited time. Is it not still limited? I frankly think the Supreme Court is w-a-y out of line with this, but it is what it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
drowsy:

loving this set, thanks David. Cheers everyone.
  9:52pm
Listener Gregory:

@Dean, You know more than I do about this. I think the European compilations can only be brought in as imports, not directly distributed in the US, which may be a distinction without a difference.
So long as the Disney Company exists, it seems that US copyrights will be extended into perpetuity.

  9:57pm
Dean:

What's your favorite paradox?

Are you interested in Gettier problems?
  9:59pm
Listener Gregory:

Yes, the Gettier is great, though not a paradox, I don’t think.
  9:59pm
Listener Gregory:

Great show, David. Thanks!
  10:00pm
Dean:

No, not a paradox. A philosophical conundrum, but also a response to an assumed common understanding that was not in fact common.
