Sorry! There are surprisingly NO Jewish delis in Astoria proper, but there are some fabulous bagel and schmear joints. If you want old school Kosher delis you have to go out to Bay Ridge or similar; for good Russian fish and more Ashkenazhi-leaning appetizers there's Brighton Beach. Long subway rides involved but doable, especially on a Sunday which is the big "shops open after Shabbat" day. Ditto for Rego Park.

True story: Last night's Seder was in our local Freemason's Lodge. Recently renovated. Their "event room" had a disco ball in it, which was directly overhead the long table set out for the proceedings. Freemason art all over the walls. Nice touch of surrealism. Also, the regular members were having a meeting in the upper level, and on the way out at a very late hour I got to mingle with some of the members -- all local men whom I've seen around the neighborhood/in my building (including my super) all dressed up in suits, etc and not in their usual work duds. Reminds me of why blue-collar guys like my Grandad joined fraternal societies-- to dress up, try to be more involved in the community, and be more than just meat/muscle/grunts to the machine. Grandpa was Knights of Pythias -- Jewish equivalent of (take your pick --Shriners etc) which also sub-contained a burial society as part of its membership.

Le sigh. Reminds me back when I was growing up; Bronx Park South and Skillman Avenue were absolutely PACKED with real Old School Jewish Delis that were either milchig or fleishig (MAN I miss the house made hot dogs at Zion's), true old school Jewish bakeries (for breads) and cafes (for sweets) and so forth. I would kill for a place where I could get real decent chopped liver and some proper smoked sable -- not the shrink wrapped crap but sliced off of a behemoth slab the size of a notebook, and sprinkled with paprika on the outside.

Yowza! Bagel with a schmear IF you get the schmear with real lox will set you back around $4 here. There's a micro chain out here (2 branches about 2 subway stops away from each other) called "New York Bagel Cafe" taht is run by Israelis. Its specialty is not just its bagels, but flagels (imagine a bagel but rolled flat before poaching/baking process -- makes for neater and flatter sandwiches) and, I kid you not, an assortment of at least 40 different cream cheese options at both locations, including a TON of vegan options, including...vegan with bacon and scallions, as well as real cream cheese with Kosher bacon bits and scallions. They don't cut lox off the slab--more shrink wrap alas--but what they do have is quality. They also make shockingly good coffee at both locations.

Same, grew up in Boro Park, Brooklyn, there were lots of delis and other eateries there, lower Manhattan (Bernsteins, Ratners). Most of them closed, not many near me in New Jersey. Even in the Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods, like Boro Park, the old style Deli food disappeared, it's changed (Not for the better).

If it's any consolation, my Mom's brother (my Uncle) and his wife live in West Palm Beach after growing up in Da Bronx, and they say that the Kosher delis down there suck, even the ones near Jewish retirement enclaves. OTOH oddly enough, at my Mom's funeral, the funeral home was VERY plugged in to the local Haredi businesses there and in North Jersey -- the deli spread that they put out was absolutely spectacular. My brother and I sprang for the max out "all the smoked fish" spread and it was gorgeous -- two full sides of lox, herring, whitefish salad, and smoked sable, with all the fixings imaginable on amazing bagels. As my brother and I said "Mom would be MORTIFIED if we didn't have enough food/had crappy food at her funeral." I mean, it was the worst day of my life in recent memory but the food actually WAS fantastic. We sent people home with a ton of leftovers as it was the hottest day of the year to date and didn't want to waste it/have it sit around.

Getting on and off the Island is a PITA. I remember when my Mom used to host in Rockland, the people who showed up the LATEST were not the peeps driving up from the ass end of NJ. It would take my cousin 3 hours in the car to go from Port Jefferson to Rockland due to traffic and getting out of the giant sticky traffic jam that is the juncture between the Island and NYC, and then crawling through the Bronx and Westchester to the Tappan Zee.

Sometimes calling them "vegan beef" or "vegan chicken" is just a shorthand to let you know something about the color and texture profile of what you're getting rather than any kind of attempt to mirror a flavor or texture.

Sometimes not, of course (chorizo seems to be a main exception).
