Erik/VermonT:

Its late/early free association time-zone: i didn't know this until semi-recently: David Bowie originally released ‘The Prettiest Star’ as a single in March 1970. It was later re-recorded for his sixth album, Aladdin Sane.
‘The Prettiest Star’ was a rarity for Bowie: a straightforward and sincere love song, of a type he rarely wrote again. Its release as the follow-up to ‘Space Oddity’ may have confused listeners expecting another sci-fi themed single, and ‘The Prettiest Star’ failed to chart. The original version has Marc Bolan guest on guitar & Visconti playing Bass. I kinda like the original.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am
tom tom the pipers son:

yes, and the person i'm talking about is getting a lot of play now in london as some specialist in ai and music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23am
fred:

↳ Brian D @4:18
Sure, but that's only a better photoshop. And it might not be that hard to train a model to tell the difference (someone in my office works on that). AI is a misnomer (at least for now), it's a tool, and still a blunt one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27am
tom tom the pipers son:

↳ fred @4:23
i think what adds to the danger in a gold rush mentality fueling belief, it ai plus unfettered capitalism
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28am
fred:

↳ Song: "Clip: Shootings in Serbia" by "n/a"
Speaking of freak out, Serbia had two mass shootings in a week and that shocked people there. In another country two in a single day is business as usual
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29am
Brian D:

↳ fred @4:23
Still blunt, maybe, but getting sharpened as we speak. Or are we robots?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30am
fred:

↳ tom tom the pipers son @4:27
So many things can be blamed on something plus unfettered capitalism. It doesn't take an AI to see the common factor there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41am
fred:

↳ Brian D @4:29
From what lI overheard about GAN, it looks like it wouldn't take much to favor the adversarial side to have a good fake detector. But Google focuses its massive resources on the fake side. Which ties in again to unfettered capitalism. There is research on detecting fakes, but the funding is laughable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42am
Brian D:

↳ fred @4:41
Right. That "unfettered capitalism" thing is no small issue...
Avatar 4:44am
Michael of Cologne:

↳ Brian D @4:29
A multi-layer artificial neural network mining mountains of digital data for matched patterns that are extrapolated. This guarantees that future events are a regurgitation of what has already eventuated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47am
fred:

↳ Michael of Cologne @4:44
AI only interpolates, actually. Extrapolation is the next threshold, and that would be more alarming
Avatar 4:47am
Michael of Cologne:

↳ Michael of Cologne @4:44
Maybe we humans are well on the way to dumbing ourselves down to the level of AI.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am
Brian D:

↳ Michael of Cologne @4:44
So, for work, I interviewed a guy who has developed an AI program designed to train medical personnel on "empathic speaking." It doesn't speak FOR the personnel; it only gives them ideas to improve communication. Good enough. But there are people already talking about using the tech to replace humans, online at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am
tom tom the pipers son:

fast buck fakes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50am
fred:

↳ Brian D @4:48
Sorry to be a one-note instrument, but what are "these people" promoting?
Avatar 4:50am
Michael of Cologne:

↳ fred @4:47
The extrapolation is necessarily fake because AI literally has no future dimension. It can only process algorithmically what has been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53am
fred:

↳ Michael of Cologne @4:50
Exactly, so far. Extrapolation in latent space is a very hot area of research
Avatar 4:54am
Michael of Cologne:

↳ Brian D @4:48
Yep, cost-cutting to enhance the accumulation of thingified value aka capitalism. A perfect fit between algorithmization and endless accumulation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55am
Brian D:

↳ fred @4:50
They're not promoting anything. It's a training tool to assist medical personnel in effective communication.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55am
tom tom the pipers son:

although it's not ai but maybe relates in a zeitgeist type of way, this conversation makes me think of fox news and tucker carlson ... purposefully ignoring reality to cynically market lies to make a buck

Avatar 4:58am
Michael of Cologne:

↳ fred @4:53
Problem is, time itself, and hence the dimension of the future, is wholly pre-spatial. On the wrong track from the very start (with the Greeks) by spatializing time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00am
fred:

↳ Brian D @4:57
With the sorry state of mental health counseling (not just in the US), that could be positive, if not ideal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03am
Brian D:

↳ fred @5:00
That's (sadly) true. But the problem is, some of these "players" don't plan on disclosing that people aren't actually talking to, uh, people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06am
fred:

↳ Michael of Cologne @4:58
I get your point. My personal blinders come from working for researchers who use AI for music, where time is very much spatial
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09am
fred:

People not talking to people might be a factor in the mental health crisis, so that's indeed concerning
