Good morning Brian, Fred, Tom Tom and whoever else is listening. Tampere was a zoo last night between the ice hockey world cup being held here and people going nuts over the Eurovision contest for the most insipid pop song of the year. Had to take several detours to get home from our gig. Luckily it was held in a hockey- and Eurovision-free zone....

Hey, this is amusing. I was catching up on the archives and first realized that the story you were playing about people fearing the rush at the border in the near future happened to be THAT EXACT DAY I was then listening to it, having watched that very morning news stories of gun fights across a Mexico / Texas bridge, and not understanding why.....

And then heard that you'd played a Big Brave song for me, which was AWESOME! And even awesomer because the week before I'd played a Big Brave song and credited you for it in my playlist, totally oblivious of A Song for Foxes!!

I was a token poor person in a political group I worked for for two years. It started off with good intentions; dudes who had been in the peace corp who wanted to keep doing good, so they started essentially a lobby group of volunteers to push for laws to eradicate poverty. But by the time I got involved decades later it was drowned in bureaucracy, and all the young people involved seemed more interested in using the experience as a networking and resume advantage.

I was part of the cohort euphemistically titled "Experts on Poverty" thanks to my "lived experience"
Avatar 3:42am
Fox:

And once a year, everyone gets to go to Washington DC and take part in conferences and lectures that are mostly bullshit, and then the last day we go in teams to talk to our representative's office staff. At no point were we, as poor people, asked for our expertise to inform the laws for which we were to advocate. No, we were there to "tell our story". Somehow we were to fit our life of poverty into a scenario that would tell a compelling story to sway the listener to our side.

It sucked to be in DC fighting for housing projects when I HATE the idea of projects and as a poor person, I know that Section 8 is a FAR better solution.

Mother's Day is less chaotically disributed around the world than Father's Day. MD is also today at least in Finland and Germany. I know the day is different in Britain where it's called Mothering Sunday.
Father's Day is all over the place, and while my parents were alive I could never remember when to call my dad. The weirdest one is Germany, where Vatertag is on Ascension Day and instead of it being a day where the family do nie things together with the father, the men go off together into the countryside pulling a cart full of booze and get shitfaced.

Oh! The worst most ironic fucking part of my DC visit:

It was the day that we were actually meeting with the politicians. I brought my own snacks because I can't eat most common American foodstuffs. Between meetings, we went to the closest cafeteria, which was in the basement (near the senator-only subway!). And everyone in my group went to get food and sit down, but I instead wandered around the perimeter of the cafeteria trying desperately to find a recycling bin for my trash.

I could find none.

Eventually I sat with the compatriots at their table, defeated.

"Did you see Bernie?!?"

What?

"Bernie Sanders! He was just here!"

... what?

"We each got selfies with him, see?!"

.......WHAT?!

So yeah. I missed meeting Bernie Sanders AT THE CAPITOL CAFETERIA because I was looking for a recycling bin.

Fox:

These people have this notion of "compassion" that is utterly beyond any realistic understanding of drug addicts and is based on ego and savior complex. It's so gross.

Yeah, crack pipes seems a bit much. Though crack, man... wow.

I still believe needle exchanges and rehab over incarceration.

Fox:

People in charge of taking care of the drug crisis should be a team made from every drug counselor and manager of a halfway house with a criminal record.

Those are the people who know that junkies lie. And also know that they are still human. But again, "never trust a junkie."

But what do you do with people who are mentally damaged and antisocial and violent who live on the street and do crack? If free, they will only smoke and be crazy.

Bring back asylums? That's only going to turn into state run horror shows of abuse.

There's a crack hotspot in Paris. It's sad, but these guys are hostile and I just avoid them. Not proud of that

Not everyone who smokes crack is violent or hostile tho. Just saying.

Crack is a different animal. But agree with you on the counselor/halfway house/criminal record approach.

I agree passing out crack pipes seems stupid and misguided and pointless

True. But they can be. The drug brings that out in lots of people.

What I’ve heard from crackheads is that every crackhead(crack smoking American? What’s the pc term? Heh heh) has their “tweak” (repetitive habit, thing they do when smoking) all different. Then of course there’s the behavior they engage in to make money, some may be violent sure, many are not at all.

Yeah, drunks are an issue as well when walking at night. Crackheads have a short fuse though, so spotting them from afar is important

I live in a pretty heavy crack area… petty theft is definitely a problem, not saying there’s no violence either but I don’t see much and none directed at me… the violence I experienced was more a result of poverty, youthful anger imo.

I’m a bit more freaked out by meth cause it’s more new to the area and provokes sleep deprivation which is terrible for the brain…

Not that crack doesn’t keep people up… but I think you gotta keep smoking it whereas you can smoke meth once or twice and be up for days(or so I’ve heard idk if that’s an exaggeration)

a while back was in n california and there was a town known for meth heads, they were called 'tweakers" appropriately enough cause they certainly were tweaked

I mean the only meth head I’ve for sure encountered recently was completely harmless(at that moment) but I’m still disturbed that it’s making incursions… any new hardcore drug being sold in the area is not good. Not looking forward to xylazine arriving on the scene. That shit killed my favorite cousin last year. Think he was looking for Ketamine… got sold xylazine mixed with fentanyl and Xanax. Super lethal.
