Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from May 26, 2023 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

I think a bunch of early musicals (e.g., Ziegfeld?) were also jukebox musicals in the sense that they were collections of songs by different composers put together to make a revue. Today, they consist of almost all familiar hits.
I await correction from Henry and others who actually know things.

Well musicals in those days had paper thin books and songs got swapped in and out if a cast member could push the song successfully! Case in point: the mega hit 1902 Wizard Of Oz.

The Follies, Gaities, and other spectacles were very much like an upscaled Vaudeville, which also let them get away with more artistic nudity.

The Beggers Opera mixed well known tunes with alternate lyrics to go with the show.

What WHH said. For the most part the follies and reviews of the early 1900s were featuring current hits and also introducing new songs. Jukebox musicals are more a nostalgia or rediscovery approach to a well established body of work. I cannot think of any of those that interest me, There are some, like the ABBA work derived Mama Mia! (which I've not seen or listened to) which do have a story, which I at least respect.

Here's an age old question I have for you Bronwyn: Where does Kismet fall into? Repurposed melodies with lyrics written for the show?
🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm

And while I spent some time writing that Bronwyn shows me that I had no idea of the range of productions that could be considered Juke Box Musicals.
