I saw They Might Be Giants play a free noon-time show at the old Rhino Records store. Just the two of them, guitar and accordion c.1991. I was working in Westwood so it was really great, saw em on my lunch break and went back to work.

I was a major fan from their debut up thru the early/middle '90s. They were so prolific, and there were other musics going on, so kinda lost track of 'em...until our daughter was born. Their children's albums got me listening to em again. Clever marketing on their part! Like: "How do we get back our old listeners who liked us in college but then grew up and moved on to other things? I know! Kid's records!"

I totally just clued into how "Langer & Winstanley" Birdhouse is... Figures, since they produced it! Never added up 1+1 to get 2 before in that equation.

I'm an extra in the video for this song. The Boys would perform it, then do another song while the crew was setting for the next take. So it was like getting a free Beasties mini-concert, and right in front of the stage.

Simply a masterpiece.

"the civil wars, and the uncivilized wars..."

"Both sides are right

Can't tell you how many times I've thought of those lines over the years. Sadly, as timely as ever.

X hit the LA scene like a ton of bricks. Punk was a bit of a shock to the culture to begin with, but X was on a whole other level. Not just: "i hate Reagan/school/my mom" but really masters of hardboiled literature. The new Raymond Chandler(s). As young teens, it blew our minds.
