When I read Levon, I (like many) resented Robbie. I now take what Levon said with a grain of salt. Levon might’ve inspired Robbie with his stories, but he wasn’t a songwriter. It would’ve been nice if they all shared songwriting credits, but few bands do that. As far as the publishing goes, I heard that Robbie bought some of them out. Seems they needed the cash to feed their habits. All in all, a sad tragic story. That’s one Band that should’ve gone on forever 😢

I heard that Hardwick recorded 5-6 episodes of the reboot already. I think they should end it there. There is no show with Johnny Hardwick and Dale’s voice can’t be duplicated well, not even by AI.

I have a Band related story from the summer of ‘84. I’m a Brooklyn boy, and that year there was something called the NY Folk Festival and one of the events took place in Coney Island with Rick Danko, Steve Forbert, the Coasters among others. I loved The Band - saw the original group a bunch of times and used to see all the rest (except Robbie) when they’d gig at the Lone Star and Folk City post Last Waltz. My buddy Phil and I went over to Coney early, brought a basketball with us and shot some hoops at a playground right next to the bandshell. While we were playing, some guy comes over to the fence and asked if we had a joint. It was Rick Danko, and, unfortunately, we had nothing on us (which was ironic because Phil was a major drug user from way back when).
It would’ve been cool to have shared a joint and stories with Rick Danko who was my favorite human in that Band. Every time one of them has died, another piece of my heart has broken.

Had the good fortune to meet MR. BRENTON WOOD many times. He was a customer at a record store I once worked at in LA during the 80s. Super nice guy----and humble about his accomplishments----unlike another Angeleno I met several times at the same store, BARRY WHITE. Brenton came down often to San Pedro(he lived in Compton) because he had heard we sold a lot of his records. Yes, he was something of a superstar to many of our customers. OOGUM BOOGUM, Brenton!

James Jamerson, the legendary bassist of Motown's house band, the FUNK BROTHERS.

Maybe so, but his annual Pazz and Jop poll of reviewers was required reading for me in the Village Voice for many years. Influenced my record buying habits for months after it came out.

The classic quartet, Tyner, Trane, Elvin Jones, Garrison, great track!
(recently got the "newly discovered" Live at the Village Gate reissue, cool to have a live recording of the group with Eric Dolphy, but the sound quality is not so great, probably won't be playing it all that much).

Hey doctorjazz, I, too, would read Christgau in the Voice. But, he’s an asshole. I saw him walk out of a gig at the Palladium approx 1/2 hour after the set began, and then he wrote a review of the entire concert. After Lennon was murdered, he writes a piece where he says his wife said “why couldn’t it have been Paul instead, or words to that effect. He also trashed Jack Bruce’s singing voice in the Voice??!! That, alone, is evidence that he’s got taste up his ass and is, therefore, an asshole.

No arguments, he was very full of himself, and I often disliked his writing/opinions. Sometimes he was spot on, though (which doesn't make him less of an asshole).

@Jeff

Now I hate the guy even more. It’s his lack of taste that has led to the mainstreaming of less than stellar music

One day I was with one of the guys from PBC. We were driving up to his house in the Hollywood Hills. "See that house? Ray Manzerack lives there, One day I said 'Hey Ray, we use to open for The Doors at The Whiskey a Go Go' he just ignored me!"

Disappointed in the sound quality of this LP (I did mention it earlier), the drums are so out front, other instruments not as easily heard. (I saw a review of it AFTER I purchased it warning about this-most reviews just raved).
