Only FIVE DAYS AGO, I commented on the Facebook "Things That Aren't There Anymore Northern NJ Edition", someone posted, "WPAT". So here's my much-too-long comment but I have to share it with you: When my father wasn't playing big band records or Bob & Ray on WOR, he had these stations on. "Easy listening". Bands like the Frank Chacksfield Orchestra or the 1,001 Strings or Bert Kaempfert which I thought were unbearably corny...especially when I started playing the drums, obsessed with prog rock and its complexity and drum solos...and Bert's band's drummer had ONE fill that he'd play, ba-BAP ba-DUM in every song...till I learned in maturity that "fills bring the thrills but the groove pays the bills"...OK that was a bit obscure for a non-drummer but...much much later on we had friends who moved into a house in Bergen county that had a den with a stereo built into the wall, and the previous owners left behind a WPAT NYC radio guide postcard...cream-colored paper with brown ink listing all of the stations on your dial OTHER than WPAT (brilliant marketing)...but with WPAT in larger letters. I couldn't believe it when I saw it b/c my dad had the same card inside the stereo cabinet (that he built himself, walnut veneer, louvered doors on either side for the records, and a lift-up lid for the stereo)...needless to say your post brought me a massive flashback. And then there was WRVR, the jazz station I listened to before there was WBGO.

Unfortunately the potential of a John/Paul reunion, along with Stevie Wonder! was screwed because they were all high on coke after hanging out a while, and the bootleg apparently has them meandering around, trying to get "Stand By Me" going unsuccessfully, John kept asking for a "toot" of coke. Hence the bootleg was dubbed: "A Toot and a Snore in '74".

Art Blakey, Tony Williams...that's all we wanted to hear. And the DJs would announce the tracks like Phil Schaap on WKCR did, with the track name, album name, date recorded, even the album serial number (I think). It was a great jazz station, I learned so much from listening to it. Then fusion came along and they started playing more of that, lots of listeners weren't pleased...but I got into it...I remember driving to my college-era summer job in the cafeteria at Bell Labs (aka Lumon Corp from Severance) and blasting Weather Report out the windows...I miss it. WBGO seems to have undergone a transformation lately...Sunday nights used to be "smooth jazz" time slot but now they mix it in throughout the day. Ditched the blues show in the afternoon. And the DJs would announce the tracks like Phil Schaap on WKCR did, with the track name, album name, date recorded, even the album serial number (I think). It was a great jazz station, I learned so much from listening to it. Then fusion came along and they started playing more of that, lots of listeners weren't pleased...but I got into it...I remember driving to my college-era summer job in the cafeteria at Bell Labs (aka Lumon Corp from Severance) and blasting Weather Report out the windows...I miss it. WBGO seems to have undergone a transformation lately...Sunday nights used to be "smooth jazz" time slot but now they mix it in throughout the day. Ditched the blues show in the afternoon.
