That RevRab Replacements story :
Was in Cape Cod, Mass. in the mid-1980s in my first attempt to Leave Home. (Failed.) Well-to-do Doctor's son I was hanging with heard that 'Tommy & the Placemats' would be @ the Men's Insquare pub in Cambridge (Boston) - or some name like that. A tiny tiny club~bar with barely a foot to stand in - right in front of the stage.
Everybody in the Underground knew this meant TheReplacements - & they were warming up here for a bigger Boston gig to come.
We dropped acid & went ...Bob was in a Dress. & they played 'Strawberry Fields' into our faces...

I think I saw them the first time at fifteen and then probably ten more times through HS. Through a weird series of coincidences, KK ended up playing solo on a bill with K8's band in Brooklyn a dozen or so years back, and I was the only one in the place who knew him, and he basically did a request show for me. And then I got to talk to him and tell him how foundationally formative his music had been for me, as a listener but also in terms of art imbued with ethics and and with solidarity and how much I felt he had shaped the course of my development from snot-nosed brat to SLIGHTLY less snot-nosed brat, and it meant just the absolute world to me to be able to tell him that. And he was totally cool about it. And then his wife approached me later to tell me how much that conversation meant to him, and it's just one of the most treasured memories I have.

Yep yep. Forgot Love Tractor. Which is funny--when I was 17 I sneaked off to Athens to see Love Tractor at the 40 Watt, and got interviewed by the Washington Post after the show. I've mentioned it on here before; it was a fun time. I had no plan, I slept on somebody's porch.

Odd period... Associate REM exactly with that time of College Radio surfacing into Alternative Culture writ large. Which happened to correlate exactly to some of us Leaving Home & this major life transition - & all the implications of that. So ...with REM - it was both a thrill & validating & gave hope that they were in the Charts that way ...& - simultaneously - by the time, say, 'Stand' was on MTV often enuff - a feeling REM was morphing into a Pop Chart band in ways - less than optimal. Tho they continued to put out relevant things (imho) for some time ...one feels they start with 'Murmur' which is this shimmering sterling artifact expressing our young longing & potential - & frankly it's diminishing returns as they go on - tho more or less steeply (not an exact precipitous plunge, but more obliquely...)
