Indeed. Somewhat unrecognizable from the town of my youth. At least the Hot Grill is still making Texas weiners.

i know people who "only like metal". the truth is they don't like music. metal is just a scene for them.
Avatar 1:35pm

Coelacanth.. only children like ONE thing... and conformists infect all scenes. It is unfortunate.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm

↳ OSS @1:35
i'm very Thankful my introduction to music as a child was with melody, rhythm and harmony. i guess it was in me to go far beyond that, but it's a wide world for me. i still enjoy beatles and Harry Belafonte.
i've met so many people who don't know or care about any music that isn't of their chosen scene, or image. without exception people i've known who only listened to metal or only listened to rap listened to no music at all when they got older.
  1:50pm
celestial.slugs:

↳ coelacanth∅ @1:33
It's very common, unfortunately. I'd certainly be shunned from most scenes for a lot of the music I listen to. At my old job, to cut through the Rhianna and other modern garbage I started playing an eclectic variety of music ranging from metal to Linda Perhacs. People thought I was trolling them. No, I just like music that is good, regardless of label.
  1:53pm
OSS:

↳ celestial.slugs @1:50
I'd never shunn someone I like for the music he likes, but I'd let that person know that I do not enjoy certain music he likes, and that my not liking it is got nothing to do with how I see him as a person. Some people take great offence when what they enjoy is not enjoyed by their everyone they know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
coelacanth∅:

↳ celestial.slugs @1:50
haha -isn't it funny when people think "you couldn't really like that"!
i'm sometimes compelled to tell people i listen to music that some people wouldn't consider music at all!
  1:58pm
OSS:

↳ coelacanth∅ @1:53
does that include rap/hip hop/urban music? Those are probably the ones I care very little about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
Sem:

Hello, coel. Just wanted to say that your last few remarks, above^, are as cogent and clear about the matter under discussion as I am likely to read anywhere.
Thank you for that.
  2:01pm
celestial.slugs:

↳ coelacanth∅ @1:53
Yes, it is interesting. My co-worker said something along the lines of "I just can't see YOU getting into that". I did not know how to respond. Meanwhile, the co-workers that were known to be into metal only listened to Metallica and some other very common garbage, and it was assumed that I mostly only listen to weird 60's folk music, when in reality my personal encyclopedia of metal is quite vast. I always get pigeonholed by people that only listen to one thing.
  2:01pm
celestial.slugs:

↳ OSS @1:53
If it is autotuned garbage generated by AI, it is what it is. I have no problem telling people that their music sucks because I honestly think that my tastes are superior. LOL.
  2:05pm
OSS:

↳ celestial.slugs @2:01
hahaha ok. I've told that metal is not music both as an attack and as a friendly comment from people that like music too, metal is just not for them, and when they explain themselves in the spirit of conversation and to show me a different perespective, I have no problem with their opinion, some others, well, that's another matter altogether
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
coelacanth∅:

↳ OSS @1:58
not for me. i think one would be narrow-minded indeed if they said rap wasn't music. i like probably <10% of the rap in this world; but what i don't like about it isn't that it's not music -however simple it is.
no, i mean like Merzbow or Daniel Menche.
  2:11pm
OSS:

↳ coelacanth∅ @2:10
real noise, industrial, and ambient is not music technically, so I do get your point.

i have a funk & wagnals dictionary from 1932. it has narrow-minded definitions like "pagan: godless; heathen" [simplifying]
... yet, for music, it says [paraphrasing] " 1. a collection of melody and rhythm organised to make pleasant sounds"... 2. (or 3) "any sound that is enjoyed".
the latter is my definition of music.
