Maya Hardinge and David Zuckerman  Penny Side B   Favoriting Penny OST  Decimus  Penny is a feature documentary directed by Maya Hardinge. It follows the life of Penny from a teenager living in Uckfield (UK) to Germany and overland by truck in the 1970’s through Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and full circle years later back to her home town. The soundtrack, like the film, is a collage, composed of sounds and events depicting Penny’s journey. While the recently released cassette on woodfordhalse foregrounds Penny’s voice by incorporating generous amounts of dialogue into the music, this LP offers a companion piece that presents Penny from a completely different perspective, focusing entirely on the music, as composed by Maya Hardinge and David Zuckerman. we could have madonna showing girls how to be shallow, selfish and materialistic, and how to use a little girl voice to turn on equally shallow boys...
or we could have Taylor showing them how to revolve their world around relationships; but also have some vague image of power - which is laughable in the context of romance...
but very real in terms of her marketing brilliance and business savvy.

I just listen to Trane & shake my head in wonder.
Starting with his Tone. The mere Sound he gets is more Human than others. & - I've alway struggled to be more articulate about that...
Then of course How he plays. His phrasing is stunning. & of course Technically he was an absolute Master.
& the Classic Trane Quartet I reckon is only the Best Band Ever...
Then finally What he plays. He's an Innovator - & a Composer.
'Alabama' for instance, about the 1963 church bombing murdering little girls - what higher thing can Art aspire to ?
When Trane went off into Avant & Free territory - no one could honestly say it was because he hadn't Mastered other stages & Forms...
Whether the Rawkers realize if or not - Trane was the primary model for the BYrdS & others who 'invented' Psychedelia by allowing Rawkers to Improvise beyond two minute Pop boundaries...

that's what David S Ware said about mastering the instrument first, before going "free". a lot of people have said the free players play that because they never mastered the instrument (possibly true with Ayler and definitely a few others) but they obviously haven't listened to Trane's catalogue...or Ware's later albums

...so what you say JH about Trane's Content is great. Trane loved Ravi Shankar - but Ravi said he didn't hear Peace in Trane's Music !... Trane was honest - in a Form somewhat considered to have come from N'Orleans whorehouses - about both Spiritual realization - & struggle to manifest it in a grim world - & of course the 1960s were all about the polarity of Innocence & Experience & their tempestuous relations...

I haven't heard a lot of Taylor Swift;s music but I watched the documentary about her on Netflix cuz i was curious. I think she is genuine in her music making, etc., but she is so into being successful by modern, American commercial metrics; and I don't think she is all that broadly creative. But she has made some really good pop songs. And she has been successful at taking her music back from the labels and successful business wise. I respect her. I also think she is a pretty down to earth person, but, yeah, maybe not so deep or deeply creative... just my 2 cents

Maria - the Metropolis robot !
That's really astute. Of course - Maria was also the Saviour in that...
& of course Jonathan is 100% correct. EVERYTHING is on this Ballot. & despite all that's said - it's a fact that Elections Have Consequences.
I continuously point to Germany in the 1930s - & how too many other Parties dividing the Vote gave the Nazis enuff of an advantage. & the same in the USA in 1968 @ the DNC Chicago. It's the nature of Fascism - literally to Fasten - that they goose-step together to an Ideology. it's the nature of being Liberal - literally to tolerate more & broader views - to not do that as much. All throughout History.
I see Politics as where our Idealism collides with the Game of Power @ 90°. It is Ugly ! & for those who'd like us to always look elsewhere - that is to their advantage... But what GrownUps do is carry on & do their part...

Agreed - many dunums of aural pleasure does it provide, that track (where a "dunum" was an Ottoman-era unit of land measure equal to about an acre)

in high school once got in an argument when a teacher said Hendrix's music was full of violence. my classmates egged me on so i went at it but really the teacher was correct. he was reflecting the times.
i'd misunderstood it as saying Jimi himself was violent.

It's definitely a thing that Trane died age 40 - in 1967. I think of this as being very much like Rawk losing Jimi in 1970. They exalted the Forms so high - & PFFF they were gone. @ the same time - things changed rapidly right when they were gone from the stage...

Absolutely. & the intensity. Especially for an African-American in the 1960s. Just as Martin King didn't always talk about Peace & Light - but faced the Realities & shone a Light on the positive response with his energy. Trane for me is on that level of relevance. Musically.

Understand - I'm not saying other Free & Avant players weren't Legit. Different Forms have different parameters. & Ornette (most notably) was there ahead of Trane - & Trane would tell you so. Just that when Trane went there - no one cold credibly say he hadn't earned it in every way. More about the Critics than anything... In fact (from the other direction you might say) some probly resent Trane for being always deified to the detriment of recognition for others...

i started to listen to those "podcasts" but they are not downloadable on this laptop, apparently. so all the time spent when i have no internet connection and *could* be listening to those. . .
frustrating.
ALSO, i want to listen to them in order, but nowhere are they available in order! how stupid! there's only a list of "most recent episodes" and a list of "most popular episodes".

I did used to think of BitchesBrew - which is to say Electric Miles - as being a fantastic orphan. It stood alone as almost its own Genre. But more recently - & just as you say - I've come to realize it's not so alone. Many are & have been exploring all sorts of Electric Jazz not that much like what we called 'Fusion' in the 1970s. May be an evolving thing - may simply be FMU DJs are finally informing my ignorance. & perhaps both.
