@rw: For some time there was a lovely restaurant at Villa Del Sol on Harbor. The Cellar, of course, but this was more like a tapas/small plates place. Evidently it isn't there anymore. I think Hidalgo's now occupies the space. Any recollections?

Hey Dean, my ex-wife used to have an office in that building in the ‘80s. Are you sure it wasn’t Hidalgo’s? Maybe I’m misremembering. Either way, I’m not sure if I ever went there back then.

I think you're right, rw. It was then--over 20 years ago--Cafe Hidalgo, and it seems to have changed a bit. (I don't recall anything approaching $16 portions of guacamole at the time.) At the time, lo these many decades ago, it was quite good.

Ah. Cool! Yeah, $16 guac seems almost reasonable by current restaurant prices. We’ll go to Hidalgo’s occasionally but we prefer a place in Placentia called Tlaquepaque. Back in the ‘80s they had a huge mariachi band on weekends. It’s smaller now but still good.

Heroes further south on Harbor is good for burgers, sandwiches, etc., and a nice beer selection, but the vibe is sports bar.

A&V moved out of the Fox Theater years ago and into the building next door. They did a great job keeping the ambiance. So many birthday parties and rehearsal dinners, etc. held there. Quite a Fullerton institution. They just closed for good a month or two ago.

I'm reading about St. Vitus being shut down. I've never been there and I'm not into metal, but it's sad that comments on the article are largely somewhat cruel and lack understanding that NYC building codes are (from what I understand) often absurdly onerous and arcane. Normally Gothamist comments are better than this.
