Buckley is by no stretch the opposite of Ginsberg (sp.). Watch old episodes of Buckley's show. He was a reactionary Neanderthal, but he at least entertained contrary opinions. Such tolerance these days is often unacceptable.

Sometimes "whataboutism" is valid, sometimes not. In fact, sometimes ad hominem is valid, other times not. I'm not saying Buckley was right, but the level of discourse on his show was so far above what we hear these days that I can't help but regret having lost it.

But then I don't mind hearing from folks who extremely disagree with me, nor even from those who, it turns out, were utterly wrong.

Vidal? I have his big ol' collection, United States. Love dipping into it now and then. I also love older Hitchens, but I admit to having a hard time with the post-9/11 stuff. I try to get it, but I can't.

Hmm, interesting BD. Cavett was, after all, a comedy writer for nightly television hosts, which one can't expect to transcend superficiality. But I think he has a genuine interest in the workings of the world.

I love the interviews with Janis Joplin. He might be in love. And who wouldn't be?

John and Yoko's week on Cavett is legendary.

I agree. And for other reasons, Sly's time with him.

Thanks for the show Kim! Liked the Marvin Gaye and Gil Scott Heron. John Coltrane remains impenetrable.

I keep waiting for those week-or, if necessary, only days--when there are no birthdays. I'm pretty sure nobody was born on September 3.
