Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

I remember a show at Oakland's Stork Club. Weasel provided real-time criticism of the audience, the performance...it was hilarious. Then an over-the-top gig at Hemlock Tavern with (one of) The Ruins. Mick Barr, too?
  2:19pm
Dean:

Plane Crash: Kaiser, Smith, Walter. Not to be missed.

Question: The face paint? A Kiss thing or something else?
  2:22pm
Dean:

During Other Minds a few years ago I drove Roscoe to SFO from his hotel. He was p.o.'d with me, because I was driving a tiny sedan. Nobody informed me that he was bringing his wife and his bass player, not to mention luggage and instruments. We, uhm, improvised and go the job done.

DADA. some bizarre teenage concoction. the two lines under my eyes are from nikki sixx, motley crue, so you're half right
  2:46pm
weasel walter:

feel free to ask questions. i have a million stories
  2:48pm
Dean:

Do you have a taste for classical music, by which I mean pre-Medieval to the present, Eastern or Western?
  2:49pm
Dean:

If I had to guess, I'd say Xenakis? But maybe you're into High Baroque French opera, I don't know.
  2:50pm

20th century or death! LOL. xenakis is my biggest idol.

He Dave, Weasel, Free World Inhabitants!
  2:54pm
Dean:

I think you say as much in the liner notes, but A Pound of Flesh strikes me as a musical counterpart to confessional poetry. It screams (literally), "This is how I feel!" And it ain't pretty. Is this so? Or is it just a series of experiments with the sonic palette you've developed over the years?
  2:55pm
weasel walter:

but yeah, xenakis, messiaen, bartok, stravinsky, boulez, dlugoszewski, penderecki, kagel, all that riff raff
  2:56pm
Dean:

By whom I take it you do not mean Swiss symphonist Joachim Raff.
  2:56pm
weasel walter:

↳ Dean @2:54
a pound of flesh was me trying to figure out how to market all these disparate works i made so people wouldn't just ignore them. a four cd set is novel. these were just things i would work on when i had inspiration.
  2:57pm
Dean:

Got it, thanks.
  2:57pm

↳ Dean @2:56
apologies to herr raff. never heard his riffs.

A friend who's been in the punk/indie scene for years spent time with her and said she's the real deal, which is serious endorsement to me
  3:10pm
weasel walter:

LOL. adam and the ants historical reenactment! we reenactment of their chronology 20 years to the date. we did it for two years, playing on the dates of the original gigs, recorded 2 "peel sessions", repro of 1st single. big joke band
  3:15pm
Dean:

Sure as hell gotta be better than K-TEL.

I started writing poetry (again) a couple years ago, and I now have to acknowledge that WW's aesthetic has influenced my own. One poem, "Dancing Under Moonlight & Fog," has three brief subsections titled, "Ultra-Violence," "Destructive Hatred," and "Strangled Child." Thanks for the inspiration!

Eugene Chadbourne

"...violinist Polly Bradfield... whatever happened to her? She's still playing. She had a lot of children and went out to California. She was never that driven to have a musical career. She was a really interesting musician though, I really liked her. Very extreme. I think her solo violin album is one of the best things I've ever heard. Do you know that? I have to send you a copy. I've got lots of copies, because when she left New York, in a big hurry, she piled her records out in the street, so I kept them; every now and then I meet somebody who wants one or who I think ought to have one. We did a couple of concerts together in England and Belgium that came out on a record, Torture Time--that was another nice album."

I have reason to believe that Polly Bradfield now resides in Sacramento.
