When I fell for Laura Nyro, a little piece of the attraction was that the first words she sings on “The First Songs” are “Billllll/I love you so, I always will,” and that the second song is about a depressed dude named Billy. Little did I know then that “The First Songs” is a reissue of “More Than a New Discovery,” on which “Wedding Bell Blues” leads off Side Two. Live, learn.

Chas Chandler discovered Jimi Hendrix in NYC but it was Johnny Hallyday who gave Hendrix his big break on the road. Otis Redding was also a witness to this encounter which took place at the Marquee Club in London.

In 1968, we were driving by Griffith Park on the freeway. I Feel Free came on the radio advertising Cream at the Shrine Auditorium. I was looking at The Purina Dog Chow factory which was across the freeway from the park. It was painted with red and white checks just like the bag of dog food.

Forever there after, I Feel Free makes me think of Purina Dog Chow.
