First time listening to this show.
Do people have to have been dead for centuries to qualify as dead enough?
Avatar 3:50am
ViolaChica:

Dead = reviving older traditions of performance styles, dead composers, dead performance...is classical music dead? What is alive in music?
Avatar 3:51am

Yes please bring some of this music to WMFU. I love your fill in show. We need more

Hey, you played The Beatles in both shows, two of them might object to that classification.
Might not be your field, but one dead composer I like is Fausto Romitelli
Avatar 4:12am
ViolaChica:

We are Fausto fans too!! I'm glad you are reminding us. We'll get some on the air soon. I love the Trash Trance TV for electric guitar.
Avatar 4:14am
tom tom the pipers son:

there is a well known tv show by experimental guitarist derek bailey about improvisation in music that has a segment about classical music and they showed that sections for improvisation were written into pieces but left out of contemporary performances.

I'll have to check it out in the archive (congrats on the regular slot, but it's a bit late in my time zone).
I only know Professor Bad Trip
Avatar 4:23am
tom tom the pipers son:

i don't remember "cadenzas". it was implied that "classical" audiences want to hear the same thing over and over again and so the "improv" parts were excised

Dead composer anecdote: when Pierre Boulez died, the director of my workplace gave a lot of interviews (I work at IRCAM). Trouble was a music store was holding a closing sale nearby, so you had the somber director fake mourning the founder's death with a stream of happy people in the background showing off what they had scored. The director moved interviews to his office

They hated each other. One thing I liked about Boulez is he would visit and stop to talk with cleaning people. I was told that was genuine, but he sure didn't mind making wait someone who wouldn't be caught dead talking to them. Boulez had a sense of class (in both ways): I was once in an elevator with him, he chatted with my coworker and ignored me, he knew I was more secure
